Simple and effective. One can even install the magnets where the false hinges are located. Where the side wall was notched out. Could make a tighter closure and a "real feel" on that side.
@BehindtheCache

True. That magnet it already hard to open. It takes two hands already. I had thought about 2 but one is enough on that one.

Nice and simple but effective! Can imagine many cachers getting thrown by that! I've starting putting threads in my caches that turn the opposite way so when people think they're loosening it they're actually tightening. SImple things that just make a cache stand out a bit more.

That is a great too. I have a bolt puzzle like that. It is not a gadget but I use it to help others think outside the box.

On my way to my shop to build something like this, an evil variation came to me. Build a birdhouse with a hidden-hinged roof and a magnetic trap door on the bottom. When the roof is lifted, the magnets pull loose, the trap door opens, and the bison tube on a wire string drops down! As a decoy, a fake door on the side is padlocked and hinged, but there is no key! I'd send you a pic if I knew how.

Derek - Great idea man and execution. Sometimes simpler is better. I’ve had many of my straightforward caches stump people the most because they have grown accustomed to the complexity of my style. Less is more!

Love it. Funnily enough, the lock and latch may also stop the door from opening depending on how that outer corner is affected by the mechanics of the opening. Perhaps though the latch mechanism could get damaged if the door is opened while it's still closed if it's forced enough... Love the trick though, haven't seen one of those yet :)
@BehindtheCache
@BehindtheCache 3 жыл бұрын
It won’t open unless the latch is fully open I tested. There is a way that if you didn’t secure where the lock would go and maybe put a small magnet on the inside of the box or behind it if they opened the correct way it would breakaway. So it would look like you have to open it. I hope that makes sense. Just thought of that after you mentioned this.

Hi! I made one of these, thinking that the lock would just be a decoy. However, what I found was that the lock clasp prevents the hinges from opening unless the lock is opened. So…can you verify for me that the cacher MUST open the lock to work? Or am I missing something?
@BehindtheCache
@BehindtheCache 8 ай бұрын
Yes it will still lock it. The only way is if the hasp was not actually attached and maybe held by a magnet. I put a lock in that side and they still have to undo it.
@jesscollective
@jesscollective 8 ай бұрын
@@BehindtheCache Thanks! I actually found a "double hinge safety hasp" that actually allows for the box to open without undoing the lock. Thanks so much for the inspiration...it was a birthday gift for my husband who wanted to have a gadget cache at our house. He's excited!
