Thrilled that you did this video. I just figured this out a few weeks ago on my own and am glad to have some confirmation that it is a good strategy. Over my first 20 years of playing, I kept the disc at the center of my chest, reached back, and then pulled into the center of my chest. When I learned about the box or power pocket, I realized that doing it the old way kept my upper arm at a 135 degree angle to my chest instead of 90 degrees. The simple change of starting with my disc at my left pec (RHBH) helped me focus on throwing my disc with my upper torso rotation than with my arm. Your content is so easy to understand. Keep up the great work and I will keep sending people your way!

Good stuff, fellas. I'd been doing this for a while except sans the left hand on the disc; started to keep that hand on the disc after one of the first few form reviews and the difference is very noticeable. Absolutely makes a difference in helping to prevent my arm from tiring/cramping up before the swing and IMO also helps to minimize botched timing by keeping everything where it needs to be. Off-topic, but curious if yall think there's any good/valuable content in doing a video about footwear? Seems like there's multiple posts a day on the subreddit asking for shoe recommendations, so the interest is there. Just wondering if your tennis background gives you any extra insight into what type of characteristics someone would want out of a shoe where your planting your foot and shifting weight around. I've heard quite a few people talk about how they play in indoor soccer shoes and I'm not sure if that's more because they work well or just because those are just the shoes people happen to have on hand. I'm pretty sure those types of shoes are all zero drop with really solid traction, so it seems like there'd be something to it. Anyway, didn't mean to write a novel. keep up the good fight, yall.

I agree with the "Disc Kicks" discussion vlog. I've had this thought for awhile now. Similar to how in depth Doth Savek does with his bag reviews. I'd also love to hear pro's reasonings for why they wear what they wear and if they have shoe sponsors or not. 😎👍

I have to adjust to this for sure. It has taken me a year to get more relaxed on the upper body, but I now notice I occasionally hit my chest on the uncoil. What are your thoughts on starting out with your shoulders parallel to the target line with a 3 step approach? I find I'm more accurate this way and adding another step gives me very little gain in distance.

Definitely a good starting point and you can probably get pretty far in your disc golf career doing it. Facing the target allows you to snap your hips back and forward quickly.

Ah so that why my wide rail works for me, probebly that elbow being to tucked when not using it. Cheers for clearing that up! One thing tho about wide rail seems to be that its hard to hold on to the disc longer since all the acceleration comes at the very end of the throw and its easy to releases early instead. Feels like the trick with widerail distance is to hold on to it longer or what do you think about that? Squeeze disc even tighter?
@OverthrowDiscGolf3 жыл бұрын
Yes. That’s why wide rail works for most people imo. As to your question, I would advise you to feel the swing path and see where it naturally wants to come out. I don’t think a tighter grip would help.

Ok, so, I'm fairly new to DG (and mid-40s) and I hurt my shoulder less than a year into learning. I'm through PT and feeling better and forcing myself to rebuild my drive entirely to avoid re-injury. Your vids are phenomenal in terms of emphasizing the lower body being the source of power and your drills are great. I am forcing myself to fully relearn RHBH, from standstill. Can you tell me a realistic distance one should be able to throw consistently with good aim using this simplified form before adding more to the mechanics? My plan is to go from full standstill to stepping forward into the brace, then on from there. Looking for tips on progression.
@RickRobichaudDG3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I went through the same as you when I started disc golf a year ago. I was throwing with my arm and hurt it pretty bad about 5-7 times, went to PT, and recovered. One thing you will discover if you haven't already, throw from the ground up, not your arm. That will prevent further injuries. I wish more beginner tutorials would emphasize this. As for distance, I'm throwing 225' - 270' from a stand still with very decent aim. I have been throwing standstill for a year and I am just starting an x-step on some drives. Overthrow videos has some of the best tutorials out there and you won't need much more to get better. There is a Foundation Disc video about throwing standstill I have found very helpful and you might too. It sounds like your on the right path. Keep learning and keep throwing.
@OverthrowDiscGolf3 жыл бұрын
sorry for the late response here. Don't know how I missed this earlier. Progression I would imagine in your case would look like a standstill, to a 3 step walkup, to a full walkup. You can do a one step like I showed in the Slappy Bird drill if you feel like that would bridge the game better between the one and three step. As for distance to expect, I'm not sure. Depends on a lot of things but you can judge based of the throw in the same drill if you'd like. Other than that, I would just be guess work on my end.
@shawnkimball50193 жыл бұрын
@@RickRobichaudDG would you mind linking the video? I searched the channel. Is it one in their beginner playlist? Thanks for your info. Sounds exactly like my current plan so it's good to hear that reinforced. I agree, I really wish I knew from the beginning know how dangerous "pulling" is. Every KZbinr who purports to teach form should have a pinned or promoted video addressing that.

@@OverthrowDiscGolf yeah, Slappy Bird has been a help. Twirly Bird also. Goofy names, great drills! I've been averaging 250' from standstill and was just wondering if it is time to move up to a single step. I'll spend as much time as needed standstill if there is still room to grow without rushing.

What “Wide Rail” at 3:30 do you speak of?

Speak to me. I feel like I have a problem with starting with my elbow/arm to low and definitely run into the hitting my chest part when pulling thru from time to time. What angle should my upper arm be if throwing on a flat angle? I’ve notice my upper arm and shoulder tends to burn, the higher I try to keep my arm at address. When looking at videos of myself I tend to hunch over and I feel like that’s caused by trying to make room for my pull thru due to my low address and pull back? Also, how do I sign up for your patreon? It’s only fair that I support at this point… with as many questions as I ask.
@OverthrowDiscGolf3 жыл бұрын
It’s okay to start it lower. Guys like Simon do that. They just create space by bending over like you mentioned. As for your question on angles for flat that is something you’ll have to find out. You don’t change the angle of your upper arm to alter that. You simply bend more or less at the waist. There’s a link for Patreon in the description below.
