Simple Basics of EU4 Multiplayer: Joining (and Staying in) a Game

In this short tutorial I'll show you how to join a game, what are hotjoins and rehosts and a bit about some more common bugs.

i have a little question, if my friends have eu4 on epic and i have it on steam, is there any way i can still play with them?

Yes, when you click "Play" to open EU4 on Steam it should give you 3 options: Play EU4, Steam Multiplayer and Nakama Crossplay. If you select Nakama, you should be able to play together with Epic people. Or maybe I should say might, because Nakama is notorious for issues. It could be good enough for just a few people though.

Hello, great video. My problem is wheter i switched ON the hot join, still unable for players to join in. When the game started it shows that i didnt switched the hotjoin "on" and I cant switch it in the game. Players cant come back when we logged out and we want to resume it next day or something. I have the game on Epic Games

That's a tough one. One thing you might have not tried - if I recall, the hotjoin toggle is stored in the savegame file. Unfortunately, sometimes switching those options (like "only host can unpause" or "hotjoins") in a saved game (as in, not a 1444 lobby) just plain doesn't do anything. So try starting a new game, making sure the hotjoins are on and maybe it'll work in this new game. Though it could very well be the problem is Nakama (infrastructure EU4 uses for MP) is busted, either because it has too many new players or just not good.

bro please help me.My friend has eu4 no dlc and i want to buy it so i can play with him but the problem is that he says we cannot play bc we both need dlc,is this true? What if i only have dlc and i host can my friend join and play with me?please tell me im so confused

Good news - only the host needs to have the DLC! When in lobby next to the saves box, the various small symbols are coloured when the corresponding DLC is active. Those DLCs are active for every player in the game. One thing to bear in mind is that you can only play together when one player is on Steam and the other on Epic when toggling the Nakama multiplayer option when starting the game - IIRC it's a little less stable than Steam but still should be good enough for 2 players.

I always use the "Connect to ID" button rather than the Game Browser (the list of games), from what I know the game you were trying to join could have been bugged or maybe it was using a mod.

Hi, my problem is this. I have EU4 on steam and it turns on and SP works great, but when I click on MP there is none of the: Scan LAN, Scan Internet, Join Game, Host Game!!! PLS HELP

What happens then when you click MP? One idea I have of what it possibly could be is you are starting the game with Nakama MP on, in which case you need to log in your Paradox account first before seeing the actual MP menu.

Do you mean as the host or joining player? As a host you need to mouse over the area in the top right between "Human Players" and the actual player list. It's highlighted in red here: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/469489012726300685/893535264327233586/unknown.png

Yeah, making sure checksum is ok can be annoying when playing with mods, especially when you're alos reverting to a previous version. What I do if it isn't working is a clear reinstall of EU4: unintalling it from Steam, then removing any game folders left (in steam folder and documents). Then I install EU4 again and download the mod. Usually works.

How to access people (when you are host) in already started game?

You mean how to let other people join your game after it started? You allow players to hotjoin in lobby before the game start. First click options, go to multiplayer and then toggle (here's an image cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/469489012726300685/894645691853467761/unknown.png ). Then players can join normally, you just have to accept their hotjoin request after it shows up in top left of your screen, right below your country's flag. Tip: if there's more than 1 player hotjoining, wait till they all send you a hotjoin request and then accept them all, they will load in at the same time!

When I hover over the version number for hosting server, it dosent show up so i dont get the ID to share to my friends. Pls help

Well, you need to hover over this part of UI to get a tooltip with ID (you can just click to copy it). Are you using Nakama/Epic or Steam?

@@osmanlpasas7092 hmmm, seems really weird to me, perhaps some weird issue with resolution or multiple monitors? Try looking at some of my VODs and checking if everything looks the same for you when you load in.

You can find it in the game lobby by hovering over this part of the UI: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/469489012726300685/893535264327233586/unknown.png . I get a feeling you mean in actual game though, and unfortunately, if you haven't copied the ID I don't think you can find it once the game starts. If you're on Steam, you could have other players join via Steam UI if they have you in their friend list.

@@darkas4242 Unfortunately, not really. Paradox doesn't really focus much on multiplayer, especially bigger than a few players and there's not much you can do as a user. In fact after some patches the stability only got worse. The only thing I can recommend that might make it better is experimenting with different hosts (no one really knows for sure what makes the perfect host so you just have to do it by trial and error).

I assume you got the game from Epic, where Nakama is the only option for multiplayer? I only play on Steam multiplayer, so I don't know what could be causing the problem for you. I checked and it works for me, but maybe there's an issue with newer Paradox accounts? In general though, I would recommend checking out the single player and if you like the game enough buy it on Steam for multiplayer. From what I know, Nakama at best allows only a few players and is rather unstable.

Well, the audio is definitely far from perfect, but it certainly is there. I will be reworking those tutorial videos in the future, but that probably won't help you much and I can't really make it more understandable right now. At least you'll know how lobby etc look like. :)

You need to mouse over the line right over the player list (it says EU4 v1.31.5.2 Majapahit for current version), it's in the top right corner. Conveniently, since recently you can just click to copy it, in the past we used to write it digit by digit, get it wrong and have everyone crash while trying to join.

Well, judging by the time of your comment we might be in quite different timezones, but I usually play in fairly big (as in player numbers) games on /r Europe Discord server. You can join with this link: discord.gg/reurope , I think you need to use the bot to give yourself EU4 and Anbennar roles. Next campaign is going to be Anbennar, I think it will start in 2 weeks or so. But there's also an "Underground" campaign (like a one-shot) starting in 5 hours from this post!
