This video shows how to make use of a simple clothing system for ultralight backpacking. I'll walk you through the basic tools that you can use for any conditions with minor alterations. Deciding what clothes to bring on your wilderness adventure doesn't have to be complicated and it isn't necessary to bring 'just in case' items that you don't really need and just add weight to the pack.
This is Chapter 9 of the video tutorial series that is all about helping you lighten your load and truly enjoy your wilderness adventures. Once you understand this simple template, you can have fun exploring the specific gear that works best for you to fit each part of the overall system. If you want to learn more about the specific gear I use, see the links below for a complete list.

Below are affiliate links, which means I will receive a small commission if you purchase an item after clicking on one of the links. This comes at no extra cost to you and will help this channel to continue producing videos with the goal of inspiring people get out and enjoy the wilderness.
Note: in a few cases, the gear I use has been discontinued. For those items, I've provided a link to an alternative recommendation.

Great video. Would like to see more about the rain pants. Do you cut all of the bottom of the leg off? Essentially turning them into capris? Thank you.

Yes, that's correct. On me, they fall about mid-calf. Note that I never bothered to hem the edge and they have been through years of fairly heavy use with no problems. Thanks!

Great video. Do you prefer the poly base layers? I currently have some type of synthetic which is fine for 3 season but have been eyeing some merino wool bottoms/ top for winter sleep clothes. But obviously they're much pricier.

The merino blends seem to be the most popular base layers; however, I've been blessed (?) with such sensitive skin that even the softest blend feels scratchy to me, so I stick with the poly. For late/early season and winter, I supplement with the down pants (latest video shows these from GooseFeet Gear).

As far as the different puffy jackets for different degrees of cold - how on earth do you know how warm the jacket is going to be? They don’t do ratings like sleeping bags, and as someone new to cold climates I’m completely lost when trying to buy down jackets!

Great question Fayley! A good place to start looking is with the reviews at Outdoor Gear Lab. Their reviews are very useful, especially to 'weed out' the bad options; however, I find that they aren't always spot on with specific gear, so then I would pick out 2 or 3 that look good and search for discussions about those coats on backpackinglight.com or Reddit. It seems that there is no gear made that hasn't already been talked about and I've learned lots just by reading those conversations. If you search and there's nothing, you can always post the question yourself. Being new to cold climates, I suggest shooting toward something warmer than the average person might need. Bottom line, there's no substitution for trying the gear yourself. Good news there is most companies allow easy returns if you've only tried it around the house (i.e., not taken on an actually hike), and after that, most gear can be sold used on gear swaps for about a 20% loss. Also, remember that there's more tricks to staying warm at night than just the puffy; such as drinking enough water and eating a fully meal that includes some type of oil.

Oh I remember right we went on a week trip to Canada and then come down to Ross Lake in the Washington and then you need back up again at Canada to get the car again and the clothes I took were four pairs of underwear for pairs of pants for pairs of socks 4 shirts dress uniform dress pants and boots and a set of Tenny runners on top of a groundsheet a tent sleeping bag food I think we wait out at 48 lb majority of us and most of us were between 11 + 14 you won't find kids doing that s*** today
