Hi everyone! Thanks for tuning in this project of mine, I hope you'll like this one and learn something new!
My take on this project includes designing my own panels, removable back, adding a few indicator LEDs, a nicer switch and a magnetic charger which not only does look awesome but also performs great.
I did have to go over a few changes during the build since I didn't have it planned that well at first. You can see that in the video the back panel had an AUX port and a different layout than on the finished speaker. After trying to put the extra components for the AUX port, I noticed that I would simply be too difficult for the average DIY'er to cramp so much wiring in such a tiny enclosure, therefore I have removed the idea of the additional AUX jack input and only left the Bluetooth connectivity. Also, after completing this speaker for the first time I have noticed that the LED battery capacity indicator is not as useful as I have thought it would be - the LEDs are dim and the switch does not always make a proper connection, requiring a firm push on the button sometimes. Therefore I have simplified the design removing the unnecessary components.
The only building material for the speaker needed is plywood in two different thicknesses. I used 4mm (5/32in) for the front and back panels and 3 layers of 12mm (1/2in) plywood for the enclosure itself. I recommend using better quality plywood on this project since the grain of the plywood is what makes this speaker unique - I absolutely love the way the plywood grain shows once finished with lacquer, therefore the better quality plywood you will use - the better finished product you will get.
The enclosure is really simple - it consists of 3 layers of plywood glued together.
To be honest, I am more than happy of how it turned out. It sounds amazing for its size, super loud and even has plenty of bass which I did not expect from such tiny drivers. The Bluetooth establishes the connection instantly and the sound quality does not suffer at all. The speaker outputs only around 6 Watts of clean power but that is plenty enough for this little guy. Make sure you check my video for the sound test but take my word that it does not do its justice probably due to my crappy microphone.
Anyway, I hope you liked this build and perhaps learned something new! I highly encourage you to try building one yourself. It is a lot of fun and the result is actually something that you can be proud of.
Thanks for following me on this build and I will see you on the next one!

Very sweet little build. I love those little PAM8403 amps, I bought a hand full of them to mess with. They're quit the micro powerhouse for only 5 volts power. This build makes me want to mess with passive radiators, and those little drivers look very interesting. The only critique,,, I would have kept it stereo,,, but,, I do understand why you didn't. Thanks for the video/build.

I've already watched your videos so many times because all of your projects are just so awesome! And I am so inspired of making of my own portable speakers putting some ideas of yours. Actually I am on the process now and I'd love to add that unique idea of yours of putting the magnetic micro USB as the charging port/connector coz it is very easy to work it with just drilling a hole and put it in, in that way the enclosure itself will become more awesome and very neat in appearance! Well, it just amaze me on being a good craftsman you are!👏💯

What exactly does the isolated converter do? Did you consider adding a capacitor (220uf 16v) in to help with sudden power draw from bass heavy music so amp doesn’t cut out?

Love this tutorial! Thank you for posting this. I wanted to use a bit bigger speaker such as the 10W 4R 4 ohm / 10 watts 3 inch / 77MM. I know little about pairing the right components to power it properly. Would all the same components you listed above such as the amplifier and 18650 battery power successfully run this "bigger" speaker? Or should I change some components?

you guys made me want to do my own take on it. Got mine up here on youtube but only a sound test. used Visaton BF37's and a 2x8w tinysine BT amp. think its similar size or slightly bigger (190mm long max). I didnt have much luck with that PAM amp at 7:00, but i also didnt have the 5v to 5v regulator.....maybe next time.

Hello, good work. I like how you work wood. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you have reverse polarity in a speaker. In the video you can see when one cone comes in, the other comes out. I'm interested in passive radiators. Know what advantages or inconveniences there are regarding the vented port. How do you choose the speakers? I think you use the WinISD software, do you know "BassBox Harris Tech" or "VituixCAD"? Do you use the FRD and ZMA data that you can extract from the speaker's datasheet? before it was done with software like "SPL Trace", "SPL copy", even with "Engauge digitize". With VituixCAD you can do it. You extract the images of the graphics of the pdf or from the web of the model. Actually it is very necessary, not to make the box bigger than necessary and have more reliable results. I say this from experience. My first time, I miscalculated the box for not taking into account the graphics of the speaker. The second time I made a box for a double coil speaker (DVC), I also miscalculated it, because the volume (cubic meters) is half with DVC speakers, so I also miscalculated the vented port. You have to know if the software has it in mind or not.

I am grateful for the great work. So I want to make it. I would like to know the reason for connecting 1 (Kohm) resistance to both R and L to the amplifier input. Shouldn't R, L1 (Kohm) resistance be omitted for mono output? And how did the 1 (Kohm) calculation value calculate?
@DonnyTerek
@DonnyTerek 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for the comment. The reason to add the resistors to the audio input is to produce a mono signal going into the amplifier since the speaker drivers share the same enclosure therefore it is necessary that they play the same signal (mono) instead of stereo. I can't tell you much on the calculation of the resistor value, I just checked myself on how to make stereo to mono.

Hi, i made your speaker but instead of laser cut wood, I 3D printed the enclose using wood pla filament. I designed the enclosure in tinkercad and it looks very close to your design. I am having an issue with the speaker though. Whenever I turn the volume up and heavy bass hits, the speaker cuts off. I have the exact components and wired it up exactly as your instructions. I measured the battery voltage at 3.9 volts. I think it might be my 18650 cell even though it has good voltage. I will try another cell as i have several salvaged from laptop battery packs. I hope I can work out the problem because I want to turn it up and pump the bass lol.
@DonnyTerek
@DonnyTerek 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I would love to see the speaker you have made. You think you could try uploading it on my Instructables? I am sure I would not be the only interested in seeing what you have come up with. I would assume the problem would be with your battery protection board if you are using one. It seems that it does not need too much current to cut off the voltage. I would recommend trying a different charging board. But it also could be the 18650 cell - when the bass hits, higher amperage is drawn from the cell and the voltage suddenly drops, triggering the charging board to cut off the voltage to protect the cell from over-discharging. Good luck!

Would a DC-DC module (B05058) have any use in a speaker system that does not use bluetooth? I'd like to build a similar system like yours, but one that uses only a mini SD card and does not have bluetooth. Cheers

Awesome small build Like that's strong it is yet its only a 5w it's rare to see good design that are based in such low power Also you could add on the back of the speaker round passive radiator if you center the stuff that goes on the back the battery Bluetooth and charging ports leds By curiousity two things 1: Would you/will you make make this as kits to buy? 2: have you ever thought on making a cylinder speaker like the jbl? Edit: also still looking forward for that 2.1 I could bet it will be as good as all your designs Also recently saw a sound bar build idk if you plan on making one as well

Hi! Thank you so much! 1. I may make kits for sale if there is interest in them. 2. I actually haven't thought about that! The 2.1 project is coming soon! I am not into sound bar build yet.

@@DonnyTerek I've been working on some designs but always come to a hard stop and I've always wanted to make something even if it's already made by soneone else (been looking forward on making it my self) if you make the kit and ship it to Puerto Rico and you can tell that from my part I'm obviously buying it (probably more than one actually x3) Also see if you can add an aux in then that way your design can be used with a headphone jack splitter and you can have two speaker from one phone basically making a 20w set since 10+10w yet that's something that passed on my mind On the sound bar idea using those same small ones probably using a dual mini amps like on this vid xD it would be a crazy build "DIY mini sound bar with dual mini amps" in theory a sound bar it's just a long speaker xD All tho dual amo doesn't sounds bad, thinking on it would be using thin cables to place left with left and right with right on separated chambers Yet its one of my crazy idea Also on 2.1 probably a closed box with passive radiators gonna look awesome Also on a side note, thks for the replys, also if your looking for any idea you can use the reply to contact me

The reason is that the speaker drivers are not separated and move the same air inside the enclosure therefore the signal going to the drivers must be the same.
