My Mom would add water to an almost empty ketchup bottle, and keep it in the fridge - we didn't use it. Then when she had an almost empty BBQ sauce bottle, she'd add water to it, and pour it into the ketchup bottle. She'd eventually add the mixture into whatever type of soup or stew that she was making!

When we were first married, and had nothing, my husband asked the older lady next door if he could I use her lawnmower in exchange for mowing her yard! Also, I keep a container in the freezer where I put the leftover veggies from meals, and when it's full, I make a nice crockpot of vegetable soup! Bottom line: frugality improved our quality of life. Whether it’s squeezing out the last of the ketchup or buying an affordable house, we’ve had less stress and more fun in our day-to-day lives. Not that we’re stress free or that every day is fun-filled with butterflies and sunshine. Nope. But living frugal gave us the choice to retire 5 years early and pay off our mortgage. It also ensured our kids graduated debt-free from college. Those were the biggies for us. Thank you Larry and Hope for the tips and tricks as well as the reminders that frugality isn’t deprivation and that there are a whole bunch of us who live frugal lives by choice. The Doppelgängers

I feel the biggest over all habit for being successfully frugal is being fiercely cheerful about it and taking it on as a challenge! I need to cut way back for the rest of 2023 to get back on track after major car repairs etc.. Now I stay home and simply don't shop if I'm not up for the challenge. Today I went grocery shopping very early and only used the contents of the change jar to buy my weeks groceries. I still have enough for a half tank of gas and a trip through the do it yourself car wash! It felt like such a psychological win. A way I avoid food waste also is simply cooking less and buying less food. Often recipes are written to make 6-8 servings which can be problematic for people who cook for only themselves. I either cut recipes in half or make the whole recipe and freeze the rest in individual containers. That way leftovers stay fresh and having a week of “freezer clean out” meals allows me to skip a week of meal prepping.

Hi, new subscriber here… just wanted to say how wonderful I’ve found this video and how it reminded me of things my mum would do and I’ve stopped doing along the way. Growing up after the war years we didn’t have any money to waste and we would go to the park and fly kites that my dad made with old bed sheets and wood. Dad could make anything and they were amazing kites. We went for nature walks and collected leaves and pressed them in a book. We would take time to document were they came from and from which tree. Mum was a whiz at cutting up old Christmas cards and magazines and creating our own story books. My dad would take me out in my wellingtons and I spend may hours jumping in puddles and kicking piles of leaves in the air. It sounds so simple and uninteresting but I remember loving it. There’s so much more I can remember and we (my brother and I) were loved but I know we didn’t have much money but at the time life was wonderful and so innocent x

My husband has found lawnmowers out to the curb more than once while walking our dog. He wheels them home and checks them out. One time he just cleaned the filters, etc and it started up and worked. He gave that one to a neighbor that needed one. He just found one the other day that had a wheel off (but the wheel was sitting on top of it). He brought that one home out the wheel on and it works great. He's using that one because our push mower died. Our riding lawnmower we got at a discount by bartering with the company selling it. My husband does their sign work. They needed some signage and he asked if we could take the cost off the signs off of a mower. They did. So, bartering is another good way to get things 'free' or at a discount. Thanks for your great ideas. I really appreciate the e book that you have. I'll definitely get it and look at it. I am super thankful that it's free. ❤️ I kinda cringe when people say that they have a book or menu plan or something that will help save a lot of money but then they ask you to spend $20 to get it or subscribe to a monthly $9.99 thing and get menus each month, etc. If I had that money to spend, I wouldn't necessarily be in the market for what they're offering. So, thank you! You're very kind and helpful!

Place in a container, cover with a paper towel, then the lid and... turn the whole thing upside down for storage in the refrigerator. I was rather skeptical, but my green leaf lettuce lasted more than a week ~ almost two! Our lawn mower was broke and my husband bought a used one from someone and after my husband started cutting our yard it broke and so we took our other one took a repair shop and it was cheaper then buying the used one and so when we took the used one we bought to have it fixed ( so we could have a spare one) they told us that it was so messed up that we would need a new motor for it so now my husband is going to take it to the scrap yard. If my husband just took the money he originally soent on the used mower to have ours fixed then we wouldn't have lost the money we paid for that one. What i am trying to say is be careful when buying used things because the person that sold us that used one supposedly worked on mowers and when my husband contacted him right after it broke he pretty much told us that there was nothing he was going to do about it. Also if you already have an item that you are looking to replace because something is wrong with it, it might be cheaper to have it fixed then buying it used.

We fish (half of us just hang out to chat and enjoy the scenery, lol) or have picture contest hikes- the kids see who takes the best photo (the adults vote, usually a tie go figure, and we have plenty of great pics for phone backgrounds to get us thru our long winters).

I enjoy your ideas but I have to point out or ask if anyone else experiences this. We live in a town of less than 2000 and the closest town over 5-10000 is an hour away. It is very hard to sell things in rural areas that will bring half of what they are worth. It’s also hard to find free things to do because you already have to drive over an hour most of the time. Even to drive into town to the local park takes me 15 mins and it gets very repetitive to just go to the same small park every weekend. Living in a rural area verses a more urban area is night and day different. Although I wouldn’t give up my little slice of country life for the urban life lol.

When in the presence of a clerk ask them,"Did you include my senior citizen,aarp,cheap old dog discount?" Like you said find out the cost paying yearly vs monthly. My uncle pays and additional ($7 last I checked) charge each month and a higher premium. Then again you're pushing 80 you might not be here in a year.

What is the retirement experiment ?
@lauramaillie3745 Жыл бұрын
@@simplybirdie6481 the retirement experiment...my husband and I have a separate account to where we put in a particular amount that we would most likely have to live on during our retirement every 2 weeks and we pay all expenses ( bills, food, household, auto stuff, gifts etc.) Any extra moneys we acquire such as paychecks /tips etc. go directly into a different account. However money that we get from rebates, and as gifts can be used. Every week we do our sit and sip and go through our accounts, receipts, bills coming up etc. And talk about how we can do better and give each other high fives when we do good. My husband generally takes care of the monthly bills, and I take care of the household purchases (food, misc, gas, repairs). I didn't personally didn't think we would do very well when my husband retires, but so far he has proved me wrong. 😀 So far it has been a fun challenge. 😆

Water down the ketchup and maybe add it to a tomato based dish if you don't want to use it for its original purpose. I add all the bits and bobs of veggies to a stir-fry for lunch. Bugs got the cabbages I planted, so I culled through them and I was able to find untouched leaves and hearts -- came to about 2 heads out of the 6. The rest were almost completely consumed, but will be composted. Deer ate my potato plants, which didn't blossom and got a bit of blight, but I dug around and found 83 potatoes in 4 big pots. Planted nasturiums, they're beautiful and completely edible, in fact they're referred to as Indian cress. Delicious radish/cabbage/watercress flavour. I walk, do housework, crocheting or embroidery, drawing, painting, cooking. I'm a cataloguer at a public library -- look at your local libary branch's online catalogue to see what's available, place a hold on the item(s). You might have to wait a bit, but it's free. We have Nintendo Switches with the games and Mario Karts, sewing and sergers, disc golf, pickle ball, etc. in our Library of Things. I do pay full price for some things, such as my size in clothes -- hard to get where I live.

I got a compost bucket with a filter. I throw food in trash and that made me take trash out more often than I otherwise would have. Now I see how much food I waste as it stares at me. I live in apartment, but visit my sister who has a compost pile. Seeing how fast the bucket gets full, was shocking.

We go to the library to exercise. We park on top or bottom parking garage walk to the farthest entrance. Inside we use the stairs to go up or down. We walk from our entry to the farthest point. We do this quietly and discretely so not to disturb anyone. Then we select books to read to exercise our minds. Fiction is a great mental stimulator.

m ysecret to never throw any food away is to deepfreeze everything i cannot use up in due course! As soon as i notice i cannot or don t want to eat something before it perishes, i simply throw it in my deepfreezer, maybe cut into single portions, depending on the type of food.

Any leftover rice is added to another dish like soup or meatloaf. I use a scraper on all jars and bowls amazing how much more you can get out of the container.
