All things considered and I do exactly what you said to start aging my authority with an old beater. Can I then use my 2019 ram 3500 to hot shot and lease on with a different company and run under their insurance their DOT and their MC numbers while my numbers start to age on the old beater ?

@luisavila8250 yes. But getting the inspection has become more difficult because they are no longer allowing volentery inspections. So your authority will age. But you won't have the inspection that brokers look for.

Do you have to pay for the USDOT number is it the $300 too. Also I started filling out the application on FMCSA and I am up to the part where they ask for the type of vehicle... I want to use my car to age my authority but it only says straight truck, Tractor etc. What do I put. The next button is grayed out when I put in an answer for straight truck.... I only have a car right now but I need to cook my time because I will have a truck by the end of the year

I’m hearing now that they will no longer do volunteer inspections, I have even heard of a guy who was friends with state police officers and he asked them to do an inspection for him and they said they can’t do it anymore.

@ms1914 yeah, California highway patrol filed a complaint about doing voluntary inspections. So the CVSA put out a memo to no longer do them.

Quick question you mentioned going to U-Haul to rent for inspections as an option does it matter that the trucks say U-haul on it do they say anything about it being a U-Haul truck

@sharjohnwell1629 if you have a rental contract in the name of your authority then it won't matter who owns the truck. You should make a sign with your numbers on it and put it on the truck.

You will need commercial insurance. If you are renting a truck for the inspection, ask the rental company if they provide insurance. If not, you will need to add the truck to your policy. Or you can ask for a rented vehicle endorsement from your insurance. Usually it's cheaper to add the truck, then cancel it right away.

No. If you look up cfr 387.7 on financial responsibility, it states the carrier is responsible to obtain insurance.

@daimu7971 yeah, the state of California complained to CVSA that it was a conflict of interest. So the cvsa put out a bulletin that we carriers are cheating the system by flooding them with inspections.
