@@ArtAndTalk Absolutely....my favourite time with Simple Minds were those early years and although there were some amazing and truly historical moments ( Live Aid /Mandela Concert/ re-opening Barowland ballroom Glasgow) the sense of discovery and adventure touring, during the first 5 LPs was special.
@ArtAndTalk4 жыл бұрын
@Bruce Findlay an amazing journey for you, the band and all involved! Those first 5 records are so special and Innovative. First gig for me was 21st December 1982 at Tiffany's in Glasgow. Unbelievable setlist and sound. What was the title of their first book - "The Race Is The Prize". Sounds like it was for you and the guys! All the best and Happy New Year to you Bruce!

@Bruce Findlay thank God Radio Clyde recorded it and mixed it with interviews with the band in Belfast. Honestly think smaller venues are better. More intimate between band and audience. Even standing at the back! Those were the days right enough!!

Fantastic bass sound on this recording! Derek Forbes sounds very close to J.J. Burnel from the Stranglers. No wonder things went downhill after he left the group.

+Amal Gamoth I've got my ticket to see J.J. Burnel and the boys next year on their "Black & White" tour. Can't wait to hear and see this great bass player in action! All the best!

Amal Gamoth For me, Derek Forbes was the best bassist of that "Post-Punk" generation of approx 1978-82; I can't think of any better to eclipse him, but several nearly as good. He played it simple when he needed to, but came up with some outstanding riffs when it needed that something extra

@@mrcodhead67 Hi there ! Barry Adamson for me, simply gorgeous bass. Saw the simps opening for Magazine Clouds in Edinburgh 1979. Agree downhill after Cacophony. But great music and memories. Secondhand Daylight was Magazines best. Cheers.
@mrcodhead672 жыл бұрын
@@rickyjaworek1268 Yes, he was another top bassist, just that I preferred Derek Forbes propelling the Minds with Brian McGee's drumming; top rhythm section of that Post-Punk era.

Oh please! It just took a while for SM to find the right replacement. John Giblin is a great bass player, he just wasn't right for Simple MInds. Both Eddie Duffy and Ged Grimes are fantastic! In fact, I think Ged might be the best bass player SM has ever had. That said, yes, I very much enjoy Derek's work on the early albums.

@mickmacneil1 excellent sound as you say. As good as this was I slightly prefer the one a few months later in January 1980 at the same venue. It's funny to think this '79 gig was with The Pretenders! Edit: the producer for this and other BBC In Concert's was a guy called Jeff Griffin.

Unbelievable, everything is just right. The balance between the instruments and the stereo image is amazing. Your synths and electric piano, occasionally panned, are absolutely spot on. You guys were such a tight unit. And Derek's bass sound and playing... wow, perfection. I wish I could have seen you live during that period. When you listen to this on headphones with your eyes closed, it's like you're almost there.

@@ArtAndTalk I always thought Sparkle in the Rain was their last decent record and even then, when I heard SITR for the first time my initial thought was.... where’s the BASS? Then of course, it all went horribly wrong, fame in America, political.... nonsense, sad 😞

@Neil Riley I do have mixed feelings about Don't You... People seem to love it at the concerts. The same people that love This Fear Of Gods being played. It would require a whole book to say and be honest about what they did right or wrong in their history but the easiest thing to say is the original band should have stayed together. Still you can't make someone stay that is not fully committed to the band. All the best! 👍🎶
