I was at Milton Keynes. As the sun went down Gary lineker scored against Maradona. It went dark, and the Waterfront bass started. This will stay with me for life. I'm 50.

Was there that day. Brilliant concert by a great band at the height of their pomp. Still going to their concerts thirty four years later. So disappointed they had to postpone their Dublin gig this year.

Thunder and sheet lightning as they played Love Song/Dance to the Music medley right at the end if my memory serves me well. Great line up. Great concert. Great band.

Bruce the manager lost them a lot of money not letting anybody film their UK gigs that summer.

Maybe yes or perhaps Verona sold more when it was released because it was the first live concert video for them? To be honest though I'd have been filming it and flogging it to TV for a Christmas airing in 1986...It may have damaged sales of the hugely successful Live in the City of Light so perhaps releasing a film at the same time or shortly after that would have worked best. Shame no full length pro film of thec86/87 tour exists I certainly agree with that.

Yeah he didn't really understand that side of the business. Things like merch and curating the visual side of the group was just not well thought through or executed.

@brucefindlay Yes, that's my opinion. No offense intended. Simple Minds had no clear visual identify as a "brand" and if you look at their merch in relation to their peers, it was poorly designed and not widely available. I could go into any appropriate store in my city and buy any number of different Cure, Depeche, U2, REM etc, t-shirts, many with great, well integrated designs. I saw an SM shirt once ever prior to SFY. I bought it even though it was a naff shirt! SM videos were poorly done for the most part. The big exception is Don't You funnily enough, which is an excellent promo. Jim has said many times the band didn't really care about videos. Well, it showed! There was no fly-on-the-wall tour doc of the early days to build mythos. No in-studio footage capturing New Gold Dream in process. And there should have been, in my opinion!

@@singing894 oh dear...you really don't get it, do you. Maybe you're not a music fan, but if it's 'merchandising' that you turns you on, so be it. You have no idea how many t-shirts Simple Minds sold or didn't sell, but to suggest I 'lost them money' is laughable. Fortunately I was in love with the music business, not the fashion business. As it happens, Simple Minds fans talk about their music, their records, their gigs, you're obviously not a fan, but you're entitled to your opinion of how they were managed. Knowing, is another matter. Bye now.
