My band supported Simple Minds in Stockholm in the autumn of 1979. They were the nicest, coolest blokes and their crew too. My favourite albums were "Sons & Fascination", "Sister Feeling Call", "New Gold Dream", "Empires & Dance", "Real To Real Cacophony" and parts of "Sparkle In The Rain". I was a massive fan of those records and Simple Minds of that era.

@archidude88303 жыл бұрын
Stunning rhythmic elasticisty between the drums, bass and keyboard. Not metronomic or drum machine like or sequencer like. Like something in a Steve Reich piece, when an phasing pulse emerges from the interaction of instruments. Something quite amazing happens just after the “...all along the way” line in the bridges. Very cleaver rhythmic shift; I think Mel drops the drum back half a beat from the bass for a bar or two, everyone speeds up just a bit, and then the drums slowly drift back by the end of the chorus. Happens at every chorus so it’s not a mistake. The effect is like down shifting a car when already racing: engine rpm slows but increases power output. Then layer in the guitar riff...the effect is Like a shot of sonic adrenaline to the heart. Unbelievable musicianship and feeling. New gold dream is a masterpiece song in a masterpiece album. Like OMDs Architecture and morality, such an apotheosis can make it hard to find a way forward. OMD went one way into further experimentation. with Dazzle Ships and had a commercial flop that in hindsight had become understood as brilliant and the seed for many other bands. Simple minds’ demos for Sparkle and Smedt of the remixes indicate they could have gone with even greater rhythmic interplay between all the Instruments and experimentation. Alas, perhaps in part due to Lillywhite’s production it became far more conventional, drum and guitar forward, rhythm biting under melody instead of the melody emerging from it.While this served the U2s less than virtuoso musicianship well, it smothered the textures of Simple minds playing and composing, replacing power with bombast. Lanois and Eno can be understood to have brought a rhythmic complexity and atmospherics to U2 beginning with Unforgettable Fire (an album U2 has stated was forged by a desire to create something approaching New Gold Dream’s achievement).

The best live version I have heard. And it’s ALL in the rhythmic interplay between the bass and keyboard. That is what made this band so unique: an amazing bassist and keyboardist that worked together to create an atmospheric sonic landscape. The guitar and vocals are in service of that pulsing sound scape. It’s as if Steve Reich wrote rock music instead of modern classical. Once that was lost, a process that started with Sparkle in the rain, what made the band special was gone and replaced with pomposity. The bassist was THE most important member of the band in that regard. Mel, new drummer to the band for new gold dream is fantastic here as well, with real power and intensity that adds to the bass and keyboard. I think the producer of their next album, Steve lillywhite, was the wrong choice, as he shifted emphasis into more conventional melodic leads with guitar forward, as found in the albums he produced for U2. Of course U2 have stated that New gold Dream album was a benchmark and they aspired for their next album to be more like it. In that quest, they ditched lillywhite for Eno and Lanois for the Unforgettable Fire. And U2 made three VERY different but New Gold Dream level albums with that production duo, Fire, Joshua Tree and achtung Bab, arguably reinventing themselves twice along the way and expanding their music’s scope and depth along with their audience. I guess SM reinvented themselves via lillywhite and clearmoubtain into the Kerr and Burchill show. Imagine if simple minds had Eno, or Lanois or someone like padgham (think police hoist in the machine) produce sparkle in the rain. The leaked demos hint at what might have been. A cross genre bit of trivia: lillywhite was signed up to produce Rush’s album, grace under pressure, but bailed on them at the last minute to produce Sparkle in the rain. In the end probably fortunate for rush because I can’t see lillywhite’s heavy 4/4 hand pomposity working very well with Rush’s intricate time signature shifts. just like I don’t think he worked well with simple minds intricate rhythmic layering and atmospherics-he just flattened it all into sonic mush won sparkle, a record with dreadful audio quality as everything is cranked to 11 and the dynamic range is flattened to zero like a jet engine on your turntable/cd player. Just listen to the beginning of the first bridge, when the pulsing intensity skips / drops for a split second, and then explodes. Amazing. Masterful version of a perfect song that holds up because it’s timeless.
