I remember this night like it was yesterday. It was pouring rain in Detroit that night. I mean heaving, torrential rain. I was already a massive fan and drove to London Ontario to see them play the previous fall. That show was canceled unbeknownst to me. This was my first Simple Minds show. Holy shit! They far exceeded my expectations. After the show I was invited on to the tour bus by Bruce Findlay and invited to see them in Toronto which was the next stop on the tour. They guest listed me which was amazing. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship with the band that continues to this day.

Smashing for you. What an experience! I tried to see em at the Kabuki but was too young. Security held the door open cos they knew I had put in a major effort to see my favorite band, then they took me round back to meet em but certain agricultures were being shared. I did catch a glimpse of em. Made my night. They looked so old to me, kind of how professional baseball players look to you when you're 14. What I heard that night was transcending. The amazing textures on my records were being duplicated in real time by kids in their early twenties who kicked out an album that had a dark majesty no one else was approaching. The next year, I was paired up with a really nice new kid for tennis during P.E. My walls we draped in Simple Minds posters at the time, he had invited me to his house to listen to records, we had discussed a few bands....both were Beatles fanatics, we liked the Cure....when I got to his house I saw Sparkle in the Rain sitting on his couch and couldn't believe it. I thought I was the only SM fan at school, people looked with curiosity at the shirt a neighbor made for me using my Empires and Dance record sleeve. I had been wearing the vinyl off my Sparkle in the Rain album for about 2 weeks. They were a "new band" he had just discovered and I said "do I have a surprise for you" before emptying my backpack of cassettes of their discography out. We went to the show at the Warfield in SF a few months later and were both sure we found "our band". Unfortunately for him, they broke over and broke the rule about staying a secret. While I was celebrating their success and flipping over Once Upon A Time, he was searching for his next secret band. Yeah, when you're young it's quite a thing when you seem to be ahead of the curve and are into bands no one has heard of but given that all bands are trying to build their fan bases, your secrets only last so long. Thanks so much for this recording,........and the photo of Mel's pecks. I always assumed he had em, now we have proof. 🙂

What a fabulous gig! The band as tight as ever - and I love the way Jim performs at this time. He’s so PASSIONATE! Almost like he’s just singing for his life! He puts so much in. Emotional, sexy, yearning....I know I’m biased but hey *shrugs* The American is FAB! And the way the crowd react to it too, and the banter you can hear from some of the patrons. Thanks, A&T. Another fab share 👍🏻😊❤️

@GJ The DJ - it looks like a very small venue going by the pics. Mel and Mick swapped normal on-stage positions and lighting rigs so very close to the guys on stage. Stage lighting = intense heat! Either that or Mel went full Hulk and ripped through his shirt! 👍😄

It was raining intensely that night and the hall was sold out. They came in from the tour bus and never dried off apparently. Epic Simple Minds show. My first. Those were my photos on the Simple Minds Facebook page.
