Dr Davin Lim I am a big fan of you and ur credibility but some of the products like QV contains bad ingredients to the skin, on the other hand you need to take into consideration those with sensitive skin and not dry skin about vitamin c concentration and retinol pls advise the concentration for those with sensitive skin, kind regards to you

I am in America and order my retin-a online. I received 6 tubes of 1.0 for around $30.00. Also, I use the Ordinary's vitamin C 20% palmitate for around $17.00. From all of my research, I really feel that vitamin C will go deeper in the skin and stimulate more collagen in an oil form. Also, I buy Strivectin from Marshall's here in the states for only $15.00 for the Niacinimide. I use a drugstore cleanser and hydrating toner, these 3 products, sunscreen and a drugstore moisturizer and my skin looks absolutely wonderful. I have a very affordable routine, have had no botox, fillers, or lasers, and have not yet developed a wrinkle in my 40's! *If I ever need additional hydration I use the Hy acid w/B5 from the Ordinary for $6.95. I am loving all of your videos and content. Thank you, Tammy from Texas.

I live in Upland, CA, where do you buy the retin-A product? Six tubes for $30.00. I'm traveling to Cancun next month and they sell Retin-A for $25.00 a tube at every street corner pharmacy.

Dr. Davin, curious on what you think about vitamin C serum? I know you recommend its application (ABC of skincare) but Dr. andrea on her dr Dray youtube channel mentioned that she does not believe vitamin Cs are stable enough to penetrate the skin and be efficacious, claiming that theres not enough data to show efficacy.

Dear Dr.Lim, I have a quesiton: I've been battling with flat warts on my face for a really long time (now using immunostimulators + tretinoin, it's helping a lot). Now, I've had a Clarisonic for years & I love it but I've stopped using it long ago because I'm so afraid it might contribute to the spreading of warts, which of course nobody wants. Should I stop worrying or is it a good idea? Thank you so much for your videos, they are so informative and useful! I'm so glad I found your channel.

Great to see a practising Dermatologist cut through all the hype and misinformation to explain how evidence based effective skin care does not have to cost the earth. I was using Paula's Choice retinol for a couple of years and it was excellent, really did make a noticeable difference to my ageing skin, but since finding a dermatologist in Perth able to prescribe tretinoin for ageing, I have changed to that and ironically it's $20 cheaper than PC's product. Won't buy that much coffee though, unfortunately $2 is a third the price of a coffee in Perth, most expensive coffee in Oz, lol.

Great tips as always! I wouldn't rely on SPF in foundation though. It's an added bonus but it is not enough. To be frank, you will not apply enough foundation that you actually would need for the SPF to be effective. Get a good sunscreen and apply your foundation on top.

Christy Jordan I can’t comment as informatively as Dr Lim of course, but I have been using a couple of (more than that actually 😅) The Ordinary products, and even in short term use, the results are easily visible. Deciem has a very comprehensive site containing basic info about their products, and they’re very helpful if you ask them for recommendations. I don’t know where you’re from, but I think the price Dr Lim gave is in AUS$ -their average price is about 6-7 USD/€. I hope you find something that works for you, because their quality/price is just amazing. (I’ve never used prescription ‘skincare’ so of course my point of comparison is cosmetic products.)

Susie Choban thanks so much for the info! I'm in the U.S. and definitely have been researching pricing on the Ordinary. I don't know of any skin care line out there that can match their products for the price based on my limited knowledge. May I ask what you have used that you would consider top notch?
@susiechoban1542
@susiechoban1542 6 жыл бұрын
Christy Jordan I guess they have a couple of stores in US too, if any is in your area/you are going to visit the area, I’m sure the pricing would be even more affordable, because I don’t know how much the shipping from Canada to US costs (my cousin lives in Canada, and she didn’t have to pay for shipping, but it could have to do with a “promotion” where it’s free over a certain amount). I have used Buffet (I know I’m too young for anti-ageing peptides, but I have had two lines across my neck since ever, so I wanted to see what it would do to them -didn’t do much, so I’ve passed it on my parents, but they haven’t used it long enough to give me a proper feedback; but also it’s recommended to give skin its elasticity back if you’ve been doing certain “facials” etc, though I don’t have comprehensive information on what kind of procedures they meant), Alpha Arbutin (it’s said to reduce hyper-pigmentation caused by spots, and it also has hyaluronic acid in it -it worked just fine for a daily serum, nothing revolutionary, but it isn’t super harsh on the skin, so I like using it on long-term), and Natural Moisturising Factors (it’s a nice barrier that helps the skin keep its moisture,it feels really “hydrating” after a serum that is a bit sticky like Alpha Arbutin, and during winter it’s excellent to wear under a thicker moisturisers -I live in a city that is cold and windy during winter, and the harsh weather usually hurts my skin). Now onto the products that I want to yell about from rooftops... Niacinamide (just a few days day and night, and your pores will SHRINK -I have bought a Rexaline milky “serum” that is extremely hydrating, but it dilates my pores IMMEDIATELY: we can’t return used products in Europe, so my only option is to use it up, so I use Niacinamide for a day or two after I put the Rexaline on + my Mum adores it as well), Lactic Acid (I have the 5%, which is definitely what is recommended to start with, and this is a DREAM for me -I get hormonal breakouts, and recently my skin has started having hyper-pigmentation on my skin from the acne: it’s not scarring, so this product really helps: I can only use it a maximum of 2-3 times a week, because it “thins” my skin as in it makes my skin very sensitive to scratches, but it’s an excellent brightener -my skin glows in the morning), and EUK (it has an oily texture, and two drops cover my face and my neck, and I have noticed how much softer and brighter my skin has become with this). I got their Rosehip Oil, but the smell was EXTREMELY strong (and rosehip oil smells BAD), so I passed it to my Aunt, who was the only one who did not mind the smell. I use Pai’s rosehip oil from time to time, though, and it’s very hydrating and softening, and makes my skin glow, so I’m imagining The Ordinary’s one is fine in quality. I have a Resveratrol that I will be using once the EUK is used up (it’s another antioxidant, and I guess it’s slightly stronger), and a Granactive Retinoid that I am yet to try, but because retinoids help firm the skin, I’m saving that for when I go back to my diet (I have hypothyroidism, and it made me gain SO much weight, it’s likely that my skin will look less firm once I’ve shed the weight). I hope this could be of help. My Mum adores Niod’s lip bio lipid plumper, and I love both Niod’s and Hylamide’s “transparent” photography fluids. I know those are not skincare, but I thought I’d mention other Deciem products that are good -the photography fluids make the skin look so flawless in photos. In short, I have not used any Ordinary products that haven’t had any effect, so even if it’s not entirely revolutionary, it still is a cheaper and more beneficial substitute for everyday products from more cosmetic brands like Dior. As far as I remember, if you buy directly from the Deciem site, and the product makes your skin react/go worse, they actually give you your money back. At least that was the practice last year. I’d say definitely read up on the various reviews customers leave on the site, because it helps you decide whether or not your skin could potentially react, and definitely wait a bit more for Doctor Lim to talk about the products, because I’m sure he’ll only recommend the ones that are VERY essential, as he always does. I hope I could be of help. I love The Ordinary, and I love seeing more people support the brand -such affordable active ingredients are what the market REALLY needs, and I can’t imagine what I would do with my skincare if they ever stopped carrying The Ordinary. Unlike Doctor Lim, I use a bit too many products (I know they’re unnecessary, but I love playing around with skincare, and most of them I use to soothe my skin after shaving my peach fuzz off/moisturise after I’ve gone too far with drying ingredients/create a thick barrier against the cold and winds. I hope you find the best products for you 💗

Christy Jordan The Ordinary has some great products and I like that you can tailor ingredients for your skin. They have a Regimen Guide on the website that suggests products based on your goals. You can also do a live chat and ask questions. I use the 10% Niaminacide, Alpha-Arbutin, the Buffet and the 30% Vitamin C formula. From Hylamide (another DECIEM brand) I use the SubQ AntiAging Serum and the Sub Q Eyes. Cheers!

Thanks for another great video! As a suggestion for another video: could you talk about collagen? There are so many collagen products out there such as oral collagen supplements, ‘marine collagen’ creams (?!?!), collagen serums... I always thought topical and oral collagen aren’t actually effective in any way, however collagen production can be stimulated by eg. retinol and vit C. Correct?

Living on the coast, weekends were made for the beach all year long, but I was fed up with all burning and peeling of my childhood. At 13 I saw spf for the first time, bought it and started using it daily. All I wanted was to prevent burns, no clue about aging or skin cancer. Now at 46, I see the difference in my skin. Best investment over the years, spf only until 28yo, when I bought my first moisturizer. So it was easy to incorporate tretinoin in my daily routine, as I already followed the most important step. It’s difficult to go to a dermatologist in the USA, so those types of videos are very welcoming.

Our facial has the standard steps including a mask and a suction cup type machine as well as a microcurrent wand toward the end. If your insurance won't cover it, it costs nearly $300.00 for a 1.0 strength tube from Walgreens here in the Chicago area. .05 strength is around $150.00. Once and while CVS or Walgreens runs coupons, but you can't rely on that. So Australia seems like a bargain for prescription vitamin A products.
@kooltom4
@kooltom4 6 жыл бұрын
Ok, think that's because in Australia pharmaceuticals are partly government subsidised (PBS or pharmaceutical benefits scheme). It's built in to the price so most of us don't even think of it as subsidised as it's hidden but all our medications are. Tretinoin is approved for acne and sun damage and generally can't be prescribed just for anti ageing, as it's not approved for this. I was lucky to find a derm that was willing to prescribe it (I do have sun damage, but I wanted it for it's skin improving properties). Mind you we have to go to the Dr and pay a gap between the subsidy they receive and what they charge (most do charge a gap to working people, and there's no such thing as health insurance for outpatient medical services in Australia, only for hospital costs and allied health costs). You must get a referral from a GP to see a specialist such as a dermatologist who again charges a gap as well. So if that's any consolation I'd already paid around $150 to get the script in the first place, lol.

Stacey, it's kind of similar here in terms of cost. In order to get my tretinoin, I have to fork out a "specialist copay" in order to pay for the dermatologist visit. We also pay insurance premiums each year and have a deductible. So it's really not a bargain. The cost of certain drugs is very high here, in addition to insurance premiums that we pay. So I think it all shakes out to what you have over there. Healthcare is not really "free" for anyone, it seems.
@kooltom4
@kooltom4 6 жыл бұрын
Nope, you're right. Even in countries like Sweden, Denmark where health care is completely free, it's because their taxes are so high to pay for it. Personally that's a fairer system in my view but has it's down sides too. Danish friends pointed out that there's virtually no such thing as a stay at home Mum in Denmark as everyone has to work and is expected to in order to ensure the taxes. So you're right, no where is it free and personally I feel very lucky to have good quality health care that is easily accessible, I tend to take it for granted but then at times am reminded of how blessed I am.

I don't know what he would say, but if you do a search, you'll find that the only studies on one of the forms of retinoid used in it, HPR (the other is retinol), have shown that it is less irritating and has given results for acne--nothing yet on its anti-aging effects. It supposedly can act directly on Vit. A receptors instead of needing to be converted, so that is promising but we just don't know.

Excellent video, especially the cost comparison of an over the counter skin care routine like La Mer vs. laser & retinols; in the end laser and retinols, used judiciously and consistently, are actually cheaper and more effective.

Excellent. But can we talk about the stability of vitamin c in skincare? Considering how unstable it is, can you confidently recommend it as part of a skincare routine? From my understanding, it's a bit like playing Russian roulette...... Might work, might not. What say you? :) Thanks Dr. Lim.

Another great informative video! I love using compacted/coin sheet masks from Japan (or Daiso). They come dry, and you add your choice of liquids to it to make a bespoke sheet mask out of it. I use it with pure aloe water (iHerb, cheap), HA serum and some bit C powder. Sometimes I add some moisturiser to it. Dr. lim, is the PA value on some Asian sunscreens important? Is physical better than chemical sunscreens?

I have always viewed skincare as preventative. It’d be absurd to expect something topical to be reversing! It’s always exciting to see the advancements in technology, though -it’s a great sense of security to know reversal is possible. I too love The Ordinary. I have seen the benefits of a myriad of their products even in short term use! I would like to thank you again for your extremely informative videos. I have acquired a dermaroller, and my skin is already brighter after a couple of uses, and the pores on my cheeks have shrunk to almost nothing! I watched your sunscreen video, and was very interested in Anthelios -I can’t use the tinted one, because I’m too pale for it, and many of their other products had denatured alcohol (I have used products that contained denatured alcohol, and every time my skin reacted with a breakout, so I’m not risking it) but I found a “dry-touch” version, and it is just the best for daily use! It absorbs my extra sebum, wears comfortably without any white marks, and causes no issues under makeup. Very excited for the The Ordinary review!

I like this channel, just found it and I think you give good advices. I have oily skin, but now something is wrong, maybe my clean routine. I use black soap to clean my face, after that I use a toner to refresh, after that I apply matifing skin control cream from Elmiplant which uses only 100% ingredients contains lemongrass, tea and acid salicilic. I don't use make up daily, but I think it's a problem with my cleansing because I guess is for mixed or normal skin. I need an advice, if I need to change the cleansing and to buy one for oily skin and the black soap to change with something from Oriflame with skin detect. I bought also a black mask korean and it's very good for eliminating black dots. I use 2 times/week a mask from Elmiplant which is very good for closing the pores. Let me know if I need to buy something else like products which contains tea I've read that they are very good for oily skin, as I work for Oriflame I can buy for there.
