@DannerCronise3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is! It’s a temporary location. We’re going to be trying some different configurations to see how it affects the output. Right now we’re producing more than enough power to top off our batteries every day. As we add more load, we’ll continue to upgrade the system and place the panels in a more efficient way. Thanks for watching!

I'd agree with most saying get them away from shade, like that chimney. If you can't then wire them in parallel, or a 2s2p. Also the load output isn't for high demand, if you going to hook up multiple jazz and you already have a fuze box, go to the batt bank. Good luck!

I have solar on my house. I was told that you get the best bang for your buck if you can face them southerly and easterly being second best. There can be up to a 30% loss on either a northerly or westerly-facing configuration.

Regarding your solar panel positioning, you should mount your panels on the southernmost side of your roof first, avoiding any shadowing from things like your chimney pipe or trees. The second most positioning will be on the West side of the roof, due to the intensity of afternoon vs morning light. Depending on the pitch of your roof, it's probably a toss-up between the North side and East side. If you get much snow, you are better off to install your panels on a ground mount system facing due South so you can keep the snow brushed off them. You may consider a 24V system for more efficiency.

Hey Danner... great show. Something to consider... most refrigerators operating system runs on a DC current. The only thing that runs off of 120 vAC is the compressor. So there is a way to connect the refrigerators thermostat in series to the inverter that power the compressor. That way the inverter comes on only when the compressor needs to cool the refrigerator down saving a ton of power and allowing you to run a full size refrigerator on a battery indefinitely..
@rav4l20032 жыл бұрын
I see Home Depot sells “solar refrigerators” that operate completely on 12/24v that are pretty reasonably priced.

one thing you forgot to consider about lead vs LiFePO4 is peek power usage, when you use alot of energy at once on a lead acid it tends to wear it out alot quicker even if your cycling at 50% compared to LiFePO4 and thats honestly the real big difference and why they cost so much more
@ejrupp95552 жыл бұрын
Cycle life and capacity are the biggest considerations ... a LiFePo battery cycle 7-10 times longer (3000 cycles is a given to as much as 8000+ with decent management) depending on how you calculate the available capacity. The available amp/hour capacity of LiFePO4 is 80% easy, versus Lead acid of 50% (although deep cycle ones can go to 80% but ya gonna get less than 500 cycles). Drawing large capacity from either one degrades them quicker. $/amp/lifetime ... the LiFePO4 is about 1/3 the cost overall when you consider the energy they will give you over the life of the battery. It's that up front cost that makes you scratch your head. Lead acid excel in that they can pump out way more amps/second (8 times more easily) for things like starting engines/motors. They don't get destroyed if you charge them below freezing like you would with LiFePO4 (major drawback for LiFePO4). Lead Acid beats LiFePO4 in only these two cases IMO. So if you size the LiFePO4 right and don't charge it when it's freezing, it's the bee's knees for storage and delivery.

One thing to be careful of with interchanging the batteries is the charge characteristics of the 2 chemistries is totally different read up on the charge settings of each battery. You can damage a lifepo4 battery if you charge it like a lead acid and vice versa.

Thanks. Settings are way to change in solar charge controller. We’ll reconfigure for each of the tests.

I found that I have improved efficiency by running pairs in series and those series connecting in parallel doubling DC voltage. I’m curious if you did that, which would be more affective. Each half of the series on opposite roof sides, or each side of the parallel on opposite roof sides. I know solar south at the proper angle is best. …but?😁
@MrZZeroG3 жыл бұрын
Yes. We are up against voltage/current charge controller limits at the best part of the days. We also aren’t married to this location for our final installation, so it’s fun to experiment. We’ll look into that too, but when we bump up to more panels we are beyond the parallel/serial option due to input limits.
@darylSKYTZOwillis3 жыл бұрын
@@MrZZeroG I’m on my 3rd charge controller. I’m a full time RVer so I have limited space and angle options, mostly flat with maybe a couple degrees of angle on each side. I have modified mounting brackets on 2 panels to aim more towards the sun when I’m parked in the right direction for extended visits. Mostly they stay in a slight arch, so even though I have 600w of panels I never exceed my 500w charge controller as my panels are not set up for 100% efficiency. Bottom line is higher voltage and lower amperage = smaller wires needed. Less heat in wires is less energy lost. LifePo upgrade made a huge improvement on performance as did pure sine wave inverter. MPPT charge controller or better yet if you can afford a grid tie / charge controller that has a way to keep your power going during a power outage and not send power back to the grid would be a great investment. P.S. I’m enjoying your Barn-Tiny Home series. Keep up the good work 👍

@@darylSKYTZOwillis thanks! Yes, we are forging ahead on LeFePO4 and i suspect we won’t escape building a solar tracker, because Danner and I love tinkering with stuff. Right now we have an old C-band satellite dish we can harvest from the farm and that mechanism will work. …but, lumber prices are falling again and so we need to order and get moving on framing.

put 2 ( 500 watt solar panels to add to your 400 watts ) on the roof then youll have 1400 watts of power which is better in the long run because batteries will last longer ( as long as you have enough sun and you can power TV/Laptop etc ...., you should always go bigger with solar if your building a home because you never know what you want to power in it .
