Best video i've viewed in a while! Subscribed! I built a great 12'x20' shop years ago and loved it. Then we had twin girls... Our girls are incredible and they turn 6 soon but my shop is now a huge over-cluttered junk drawer and i've been putting off the big purge for a while. I'm starting to get some of my time back now and I can't wait to implement your advice. I know i'll be overwhelmed, but onward! Thanks!

Years in the RAF has taught me to be extremely tidy and organised. However, as I was building and fitting my workshop, stuff started to appear out of nowhere. Some of it wasn't even mine! After several days of grumbling and barking, even the wife daren't store (dump) stuff in the workshop anymore. Once you've binned all your items, it's so much easier to to create a nice, clean workflow. Gratz for getting your 'shop sorted.

I feel better now. I'm going through the same thing. Taking a break is the one most important thing you can do. I also started to take quick progress pictures to remind myself how far I've come and that overcomes the feeling that you are hopelessly lost and not making any progress. It takes time and is never even close to your most worst case estimate, it is much longer. So I go easy on myself, because if you don't you will give up and end up right back where you started. Thanks for showing us we are not alone.

What a timely vid! Have been on a somewhat similar shop reorganization over the past 6 months or so. It really can be a huge motivation killer when I think about just how much more I have left to do. Personally, for me, I find breaking it up into separate chunks/projects divided by an actual productive project (building a new stool or end table or even a picture frame) helps keep me moving. I would love to hear about your reasons for getting rid of the cabinets and workbench. I've found drawers and cabinets are often places things go to die and flat spaces collect debris, but I need a workbench/assembly table, etc.. Anyway, as always, enjoying the content, keep up the great work.
@Craftswright3 жыл бұрын
You're spot on about needing to take things in chunks, as well as drawers being places things go to die. Recently I heard "drawers tell lies" and I've fallen in love with that mindset because it's often too true; drawers just become dumping grounds that make you THINK you've got things straight....until you open one lol

Like many others have thought…. What were you doing in my garage shooting video? I clicked subscribe as soon as you said the quote “Nothing changes if nothing changes” That’s almost motivated me to get off the couch and that’s saying a lot. I’ve had this problem for years where I’ll be walking down the isle and see something on sale I could use for a future project and pick it up….I swear I’ve bought supplies to make a spice rack 3 times over….. I started last weekend organizing my shop after picking up a new used toolbox. Put a couple dozen items up for sale in one afternoon and filled a couple garbage bags with dust covered items. The thickness of dust is the indicator for me on what stays and what goes.

Thank you so much for making this video. I'm going through this right now. To make things worse, most of the tools were either my grandfather's or my father's tools. I am stealing the "Nothing Changes" line. One I finally convinced myself of, is that my dad wouldn't have given me anything that would make my life harder. He was also of the idea that everything is for sale, so that has helped let stuff go. Nice job. I too have found that if you just do "one thing", you can feel good about the day.

I 100% agree on the "if you're hesitating, you can probably get rid of it". I've never regretted getting rid of something either. And I 100000% agree on not forcing it on others, it's just not possible and it'll only make things worse. I've tried it, and if someone doesn't want to declutter for themself first, they won't do it. You can only hope they come to it eventually like you said.

I feel inspired now to go out to my shop and "git her done" XD I have a double lock up garage that has no power running to it so i have to run extension cords from the house to it just to use my power tools. As you can imagine this is a real pain in the a** as i have to pull my shop tools outside (because of all the things stored from living here over the last 17yrs) do my work and then put it all back in there again when I'm done. So this system is awesome and i will be using it to sort my shop and clear out loads of useless things not needed. Thanks very much. New sub and liked :D Looks like a big boys bin is in my future.

First of all, don't stop making videos. You're doing a great job and you have what it takes to take it as far as you want. Secondly, stop treating this as a hobby. Like I said, you have what it takes, so you should really dive into it full force, instead of treating it as a side thing. Finally, thank you so much for that motto. If you have the wall space, I have a technique for managing many, many projects that in some cases can go on for years. For my work, every idea I ever have is assigned a project name (from a randomly generated list, it can be pretty interesting) and a category as a mechanism to capture the idea. Each project gets a directory on our NAS and usually gets a folder in a file cabinet full of project files. Many also get a cardboard Uline bin with a label where I can keep physical items for the project. Everything related to the project, materials, prototypes, specifications, documents, special tools, digital files, photographs, etc, goes into the directory, folder or bin (or all of them). That way I can always find everything I have ever done regarding that project, often years later. It's always easy to find, and I don't mind keeping it around since it's not in the way. Some years ago I applied this same technique to personal projects. Every idea I have about anything, whether it's work-related or not, gets a project name, a NAS directory and often a bin. I have a lot of bins. They cover most of one ten foot wall on maybe half a dozen shelves in a closet in my office. A ten foot wall might seem like a lot, but really it isn't so much for a lot of people. And this has been going on for 15 years. BTW, if you had, 11 years ago, sold a 1966 Malibu convertible you'd had since 1997 because it was taking up too much space, you wouldn't be so enthusiastic about #4.

My biggest collection in my shop is wood scraps separated into ply, MDF, and wood. But It’s funny how often I dig through this cache to find the right piece for a jig or whatever. Additionally, I have my stacks of maple, oak, and pine boards, crown mounding, plywood sheets, sheetrock, and cement board (I’m renovating a house). I could free up 50% of my space if I had a wood-storage shed or other solution.

I would also say split up the area into smaller units to organize. As you organize one, put stuff in the general location it goes if you haven't organized that area yet(i.e. drill bits go by the drills or drill press) and you can organize them when you get to that section. If I try to do it all at once, I find the drill bit, go to put it away, try to organize the drill bits,and go off on tangents and don't actually get any one area organized

Did you not do a video on this topic of shop organization in the past? I thought you did. Regardless of how long you are in the shop spend 30 minutes of that time doing something for the shop. If you don't plan on doing anything in the shop that day spend 30 minutes in the shop doing something for the shop. Even 15 minutes. Consider using more of your wall space and overhead space for larger items. I am going to consider using the color coded method soon but I can't see myself tossing out things I will need in the future. But I think it will help with some stuff. Your shop looked like mine did today. I suddenly got stuck putting my smoker in my shop for repairs after a project and after three weeks of not being able to have room to fart in the damn thing I got the components in for the smoker and now I can get back out there and tackle it again. You wanted to get rid of it anyway. Dont get sentimental on price when it doesn't sell for what you wanted. It's only worth what someone else thinks it is. At the end of yard sales, everything goes to charity of your choice. Rehab centers are a good place too.

I have been trying to get rid of stuff for years my question to you is, "where have you put the stuff you moved? (in the house, shed)" I do not have anywhere to move stuff to I would like to paint the floor walls and put french cleats up etc.

Inspirational! I've moved out 50 years of crap. Stuff had even been in storage for god's sake. Now help me kill off the Flat Surface Gremlins. They leave stuff everywhere!

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! I just purged wood scraps from 30 years ago this week and it felt great.

Thank you for this video, it's just what I needed! And yes, I'm honestly perplexed by why you would "red tag" the rolling cabinets and that drool-worthy bench. Also: as far as your tagline ending is concerned, you should keep it the way it was. "Keep up the good work" wasn't coined by The Essential Craftsman. His is one of my other favorite channels and I guarantee you he'd be among the first to point that out. In fact, I strongly suspect he'd have a few choice words to say about how unproductive a criticism like that is.
