It depends on how thick you want the blade to be. If it's going to be 1/4" thick then 1/4". BUT be careful you don't want to cut the 1/4" between the blade and the fence it can get trapped and shoot back at you. Use a wide board and cut to the outside of the blade. Also you should use a zero clearance blade insert. If you are talking about making the hub then it doesn't matter as long as it's at least as far away as the bottom of the blade. Once you make the hub you can cut it to the right size. Put the blade in and then mark where it has to be cut.

I would like to be able to but the problem is that you can only aim and hope for the best with a head mount.

good video I use 3/16 inch mostly, with a blade angle somewhat less than 40 degrees. Round or Square Hubs are cut ahead of slotting, then held through the center hole with a 1/4-20 nut though the miter gage extension. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6muonZvZ9uFmqM
