In the previous video, we have looked at the three factors which will decide on the ions that are being preferentially discharged when an inert electrode is being used, namely:
1) Selective Discharge of Cations
2) Selective Discharge of Anions
3) Effect of Concentration on the Selective Discharge of Anions
Today, we will look at the last factor (Nature of Electrodes) when it comes to selective discharge of ions in electrolysis.
In this video, we will compare the electrolysis of copper (II) sulfate solution using two different types of electrodes: Inert Electrodes and Reactive Electrodes.
The concept will be explained in a step-by-step manner using the examples given and you will see the difference in the products formed at the end of electrolysis.
All these are based on what we share with our Secondary 4 GCE O-Level Pure Chemistry and IP Chemistry students in our weekly Sec 4 Pure Chemistry Tuition Classes. Most of them have went on to Score their A-grade in Chemistry Exam over the last 19 years!

Ur the man! The reduction potential of copper 2+ to solid is .34v and the formation of 4 hydroxide anions is .40v which makes sense when I think about the oxidation values ( -.34v for copper(s) and - .40v for hydroxide to O2 H20, etc.), so copper would be oxidized since it is greater in value (further right on the number line) for cell potential. This is great man, it helped me think about it! Also, I read that the reduction potential for graphite is .207v . Does that sound about right? It would make sense why it doesn't get oxidized before hydroxide

What makes it so you cannot switch polarity of the connection to go back and forth minimizing material loss? Stupid question I'm sure. I'm good at those. 😅

Hi! It is stated that nickel(II) sulfate acts the same way as cuso4 when using inert electrodes and ni2+ is discharged instead of h+. Why is that so when nickel is higher than hydrogen in reactivity series? Thanks for your help!
@Enfieldic
@Enfieldic Жыл бұрын
Because except this reactivity series there is another factor which decides which is going to discharge The factor is concentration Here ni2+ may have a greater concentration than h+ that's the reason why it got discharged
@Enfieldic
@Enfieldic Жыл бұрын
Why while using active electrodes The anions didn't got discharge ??

sir what is the anionic preference order is it So4^(2-)>No(3-)>Oh(-1)>Cl(-1)>Br(-1)>i(-1) I am not sure please correct me if i am wrong

its better if you write OH- before Cl- as in aqueous solutions, chloride ions are discharged not OH-.
