In the case of the 787, the GEnx has better reliability than the Trent 1000; so thats why is the most preferable choice.

@@Jil1AGE claims 1.4% better efficiency because of the 2nd or 3rd generation carbon fibre fan blades which RR will only start on with the Ultra Fan and far behind GE’s carbon fibre fan blade evolution

How airlines choose their turbofan engines… Technicians - whichever is simpler to service. Mechanics - whichever is simpler to repair. Engineers - whichever is more reliable. Managers - whichever is more logistically available. Accountants - whichever is more fuel economical. Business Administrators - whichever is cheaper.

And more reliable. Initially CFM56-5 sales were none existent until the competing IAE engine ran into huge problems and then when sales took off that replacement engine that was going to be offered instead of that CFM56 version was dropped

With the 767-300ER all 3 engine choices are directly interchangeable with the 747-400 because of tandem development
