So many things on your list that I can relate to, Vera...the high heels, the manicures, the extra make-up, the ironing board and iron, the hair color and the tanning. I'm very pale as well, and I was self conscience of it when I was younger. Over time I started to like my pale skin. When I stopped coloring my hair about 8 years ago, I realized that all our natural coloring is designed to work together because it all comes from the same melanin. So I could never get a hair color that looked quite right with my skin and eyes. Life is so much easier when we're not trying to "fix" so many things about ourselves. Thank you for another enjoyable video! :)

You are very fortunate to have learned these things at a young age. It means you will spend the rest of your life feeling much more confident and relaxed about life. That is a gift. For some it takes eons to get to that point, I hope a lot of your younger viewers take note and see that you do not always have to follow the herd, you can be authentic and happy in your self, it is a great lesson.

Minimalism was originally seen as something absurd when the concept came out a couple of years ago… people found it almost impossible to comprehend the idea of less equating to more. But honestly, since living a minimalist lifestyle I’ve never felt so humble and I can now say I live a life of true abundance. Less is more when less MEANS more and that’s the key to minimalism! Great video as always and best of luck with your minimalist journey☺️

This video made me realise that I’ve always been very minimalist without even realising it! Most of the things you listed are not things I’ve bought many of and quite a few things I’ve never bought at all. For make up, I only wear mascara and a bit of concealer for blemishes when necessary and that’s it. I also have naturally curly hair but I really don’t like wearing it curly as I don’t think it suits me so I can’t ever see me giving up my hairdryer or straighteners! I’ve always had blond highlights apart from for a year or so when I was in my 30’s, I decided to embrace my natural dark blond/light brown colour for a while but when I started to get more grey hair I decided to go blond again. My hair is the one thing I can’t really keep simple (which annoys me!). Your natural hair really suits you though 🙂

I stopped buying so many things these past years. Stopping buying makeup and pharmacy products (they are a big thing in my country) helped me financially and it made me more confident. I think it can be really hard to stop buying cosmetics or certain clothing items because they are always advertised to us and sometimes, one can feel like an outcast for not buying those things. I wish everyone could feel free to do, wear, or buy things only when they make them feel comfortable and happy 😊Have a nice day Vera!

Dear Vera, Your skin is beautiful, it’s a lovely color and it’s so clear. I have Celtic heritage and I have a million freckles- so I’m white with brown spots! I love my skin and I don’t cover it up with make-up. Embracing our own natural beauty is a wonderful thing.

Absolutely on point and truthful. The myths of what it is to be a beautiful woman comes with a high cost. It is sad that people are so "judgey" because commercials, magazines, movies, etc. all glorify the perfectly young, fit n' trim, air-brushed woman. Getting sucked into that world is so damaging to your mental health. I hope loads of people watch this and have their own "ah ha" moments of the reality of "perfectectionism". You're amazing! x's lj

This has been super helpful. I too have very light skin so I know about the, 'oh you're so white' comments. At 71 years old I no longer worry about that. From excessive sun exposure I now have many wrinkles and some skin cancer. So light eyed light skin folks need to be aware. One thing I stopped buying is expensive, promise you the moon fancy and expensive face creams. Now I use something to keep my skin protected and moist.

Most of the things you mentioned also applies to my way of dealing with it. I do buy online cloths, but that is because I have a large size and most of these shops have disappeared and besides that I only wear cotton cloths. I do buy Dior mascara, but that is because of my allergic reaction to all the other ones that I tried. And I also buy cloth that needs to be hand washed or needs to be ironed, but I don’t mind doing that. I only go to the hairdresser ones every two years. I wear my hair long, have hardly any split ends because I let it air dry and don’t do anything with it.

Hi Vera, I have never been into a lot of makeup or high maintenance so I don’t any of these things but my problem is opposite, I absolutely hate going to the salon for a haircut, the only part I enjoy is getting my hair washed and massaged 😚I feel like you have to make conversation and I just can’t wait to get up & go!!! I am making an appointment next week because my hair is way too long, wavy/curly and very hard to manage when it gets this long, you’ve inspired me to go with this video! I know I’m a little nuts!🥜🌰😝

I no longer go to a salon to get my hair done, unless it's for vacation then I would save my money to get it done and its the same for getting gel nails too. I did invest into a gel kit and I would do my own nails every 3 weeks and I personally love it. I've basically create a Sunday routine/refresh day. By doing that I've save $50-$200 just doing my own hair and nails.

I totally agree that if you are not going to return a purchase you don't like you probably shouldn't buy it online. Glad that you realized that about yourself! I'm kind of the opposite! Everything I try on in the store doesn't look good and so I don't buy it. But if I buy it online and try it at home it looks okay. Must be something with the mirrors in the store. IDK. 😀
@SimpleHappyZen
@SimpleHappyZen Жыл бұрын
Haha well, I can kind of see what you mean, I also think I always look so weird in the store mirrors! And the lighting.. oooof. You'd think they would try to make it look flattering haha. Even though I don't really enjoy the experience of shopping anymore, I still prefer it over online shopping. However I can totally see how it could be the other way around. It's just that I have such a low 'success rate' with things I buy online, that I don't really think it's the best choice for me

It's hilarious (and makes me highly concerned for their wallets, lol)! These points just reinforced my thinking! lol. Thanks! Great job! Glad you've figured these things out, too! Yay!

Thanks Vera for a great video. I relate to most of the list. Im very pale and my blue veins are visible and I did tried to cover my body in summer with nilons and long sleeves and pants etc. I also stopped bying clothing and shoes online after I bought a lot from what looked local online shop and had to return most of it to another country as it was their return policy. Paid 220 for purchase and paid 50 for postage to get a refund. It was expensive lesson learned. Also some materials or dyes iritate my skin etc. Food, clothing & shoes I now buy only local. Thanks again for honest, realistic and simple but important videos❤

I am pale and wavy haired too. I spend sooo nuch less time trying to change that now. I was a makeup maximalist long after I became a minimalist in every other area, until I learned more about the chemicals and hornone disrupters in regular makeup. I now use only clean makeup and use much less because it is more expensive. I love my new routine because it is so much easier!

Luxury or designer brands can definitely become a trap if the average person isn't able to afford them, or even if it's done in excess by people who are seemingly rich... I remember obsessing over these things, and then feeling insecure because I knew that my paycheck would never be big enough for those kinds of products. I feel that when it comes to the word luxury, or high quality craftsmanship, those standards can still be maintained with a lower budget, but you'd have to be more thorough in your research and then ask yourself if it's worth the money spent. I myself have bought at least 5 different handbags from high end AND affordable brands (I've also bought myself a few different lip products and perfume testers from designer brands), and I still own them to this day because I know I'm getting value out of those items. The rest of the time, I'll search for expensive or mid-range designer products through the pre-loved/secondhand market.

I just stopped caring about getting a tan which would just fade in acouple of weeks anyway. I would also get advice to go and use sunbeds e.c.t. Thank god I never did . My hair also gets lighter in the sunshine. It looks like I have highlights done but its not so prominent now as i get older .

Good morning Vera. Your skin was never meant to be brown. I believe insecurities are brought on by others. This is a marketing technique. It makes us try to be someone we are not. It takes a lot if courage to break out of the stream line and be an individual. My motto for years now is "what you see is what you get". It is very shallow to only see a top coating in a person and not see the beauty inside. Thank you for your honesty in your videos. You are helping so many. 🌍☮️🌲

I Dont know why in every part of the world skin color us an issue. Here in East lighter skin is preferred and many legit consume Glutathione tablets to achieve lighter skin and there in the west pale skin people are using self tan. Women including me have spent their teenage and early 20s in insecurities because of the damn skin color... Essentially if we see skin is an organ, who on earth made these beauty standards based on color of organ 😂

I'm Asian, fair skin is so thought after in Asia it's crazy. Different people have different preferences that change over time. I learned over the years that it's impossible to shape our life based on external meaningless, ephemeral standards. As long as you like yourself, that's all that matters. Other people can keep their opinion to themselves.

I agree with many of those! This year was a year of discovery for me in a way, which helped to buy less. I have ADD and I couldn’t understand why I wouldn’t use ANY of my items at all, especially cosmetics, but always felt I don’t have enough. I tried to organize everything over and over while also decluttering, but nothing worked. Couple of months ago I realized I need absolute minimum amount of items for easier choice and ALL displayed for easy access! Before I used to put everything away for it to look better and less cluttery, but if it’s out of sight it’s not existing to me, so nothing got used and I felt like I don’t have anything. Now everything is out and i started only buying products that work and also look good being always on display. I tore every eyeshadow palette of mine and put all the eyeshadows into transparent magnetic palettes! Now I can see every color I have at once, I had SO MANY duplicates! After I put everything out i became less tempted to buy things because I see what’s in front of me, my brain understands I have all I need and it’s easy to grab and put back, so I actually use my stuff!

Although where I disagree I guess is the luxury things, because for me it works when I decide to spend more - I started being more conscious of what I decide to get, it takes a long time to choose and it makes me want to use the item more 😄 I feel like every day becomes special! My cashmere house throusers were the item that started this journey, no one ever sees them, but they make me feel so good physically and mentally, I wear them everyday for 2 years now with such pleasure each time I put them on 😭😭 and they will last me for many many years.

Your skin tone suits you so good, I hope you can see it too very clearly. You look so soft, natural and fresh every time I watch your content. For me personaly, these 3 things are timeless beauty standards. ❤

My journey into both minimalism and zero waste has lead me to crave somewhat simpler beauty routines. I, too, have always struggled with body image and also just think I’m kinda weird looking honestly 👽 but I’m placing a much higher value on a healthy lifestyle than using a bunch of products. Can’t we all just be ok being human? 💖

Thank you Vera. I can relate to alot of the things on your list. I was also insecure when I was young. But now at 73 I don't care. I dress for me not anyone else. I have gray hair, no make-up and I dress comfortably. If you don't like what you see then don't look at me. Lol😊

Also I have a topic suggestion that you may probably like: what purchases didn't look that minimalistic, but once you did it you never regretted? As for me, it was kitchen combine tool. Though I use it probably once in 1-2 months and I lived without it for years (simply didn't have enough space for that in the kitchen), and I really had my doubts whether I should spend money on it, but once I did it definitely made my life better for this rare days I need that!

Loved this video. For me it was minimalism that gave me the confidence. I noticed that people didn’t mind eating from lots of different chipped plates, as long as the food was good. And so I started experimenting and noticed that they also don’t notice when I wore a rotation of the same clothes. Then it sort of grew from that… So I’m team: minimalsm before confidence…

Thank you! Yes it's interesting how this can be different per country... I think the most important thing is to be happy with yourself just as you are :)

Imagine living in a country where the value of people is based on what they wear as well... I dream of living in a place where everybody does not give a flock of how you dress... I was wearing a t-shirt and bermuda shorts years ago and entered a shop to buy vitamins. The girl asked me with a smirk on her face, if I forgot to go home and change after the gym (no I was not sweating and bermuda shorts were not too short, not even the shorts you use at the gym). I paused and smiled and I said I forgot the phone in my car. She never saw me again.

Hi Vera! I can relate to so many things on your list. I don't buy clothing that has to be ironed anymore. And when it comes to clothing, I stopped looking at the size on the tag and just chose what fits me. For a long time I thought that I have to be slim to be accepted by others, but let's face it, I am not. I am curvy, I have a belly and boobs and hips, and whenever I try to get rid of those pounds it had me dieting like crazy, counting calories and that made me feeling really uncomfortable around food. I was not able to enjoy it anymore, because I was always thinking about how many calories something had, how many carbs, etc. It took me to get more than 50 years old to finally stop that nonsense. There are slim people and curvy people, we are all different and every body is beautiful. So I stopped looking at the size tags and stopped buying skinny fit jeans (and decluttered all that I had), because they make me feel so uncomfortable (and then it took me about ages to find jeans that were not skin-tight when I finally went shopping for new ones). I found out that I love baggy trousers with wide-cut legs and oversize shirts/pullovers/knit-wear or maxi skirts and dresses. Yes, dressing like this makes me take up more space. But I think women should find the courage to take up their space. I once tried out a self tan product, and my legs looked horrible afterwards, so I never ever used such a product again. Funny thing is I never bought purses myself - all of the purses I own were gifts from my mum, mum in law or my husband, and since they were gifts, I had a hard time to declutter some of them. Heels, OMG. I decluttered all of them for the same reasons. I like the look, but they are so, so uncomfortable to wear. Yay for sneakers.

I can relate to many of these items. I stopped wearing pantyhose years ago and I even wore them in +35 celsius weather in the summer. It is amazing how much money you save by eliminating these items. I have stopped buying subscription boxes recently, I got tired of getting items I did not use or did not want. Now I just use that money to really buy what I want.

Thank you, Vera for reminding me what I used to buy and how I used to feel about myself before starting this minimalist journey. One forgets so quickly what a long road it was! In my twenties, I could literally tick every single box (apart from the fake nails) that you mentioned. I had the straight hair ans spent hours trying to curl it, used pantyhose or fake tan to hide my pale legs, even thought about breast enlargement, spent hours getting my long hair highlighted and wore painful high heels and brand clothes to impress others. At age 40 I feel more self-confident than ever before - without all this stuff!

I can relate to #1 big time. I've gotten to the point where I won't put it on my body if it makes me look or feel like crap ie. a black skirt or something dark. Adopting the belief that there is something out there made for me instead of trying to jam myself into something.

This is a wonderful video. For better or worse, I have always been too lazy and practical to buy things due to insecurity, but that does not mean that the feeling was not there. To me, accepting myself is an ongoing journey that requires continuous mindness practice! If I had to choose, though, I would say that thin, sheer, elegant blouses were my weakness for a while. I love the way they look, but they tend to be made with polyester or non-sustainable materials, they are hardly ever comfortable, and they do not let my skin breathe, so I stopped wearing them altogether. To simplify my clothing purchases nowadays, I only buy online from three sustainable brands that I trust, and that helps with sizing (since I tend to know how things will fit)! I think a lot of my newly found confidence comes from knowing that I'm making more ethical choices with my purchases.

I stopped buying most of those stuff or never bought them in the first place, like nail stuff. Stopped buying suits, even though maybe I am supposed to wear them to work. Do not care. Skimpy dress and shape wear were decluttered because I accepted that even though I am sort of in shape, they are not a part of my aging with grace plan. Candles and scented oils, and body creams and scrubs were decluttered, they are not me. Sexy brass for daily use were left behind because I want to look great with my clothes on and they do not provide good support. Heels, nope, but have 3 pairs for the 3 yearly occasions, literally. Makeup, just what I use, but still need to declutter the last remaining eyeshadows. Still getting handbags.

my list is pretty much the same as yours, but I would add... umbrellas! Now I own only one :) and different perfumes (I have only 2 favorites left, and until I like them I prefer not even to smell others to avoid temptation).

I prefer to buy clothes in a store - trying the item on in the store is easier as if I don't want it I can put it back and walk away. The experience in the store is fun❤

True, trying things on is very helpful, and we don't have to send the parcel back if we don't like it! :) I personally don't really like the experience in the stores anymore though hahaha. It's so tiring... I only go shopping if I need something specific now haha
