Күн бұрын

On Christmas Eve 1914, on the western front, British soldiers heard German troops in the opposite trenches singing carols.
They soon joined in with the singing and both sides shouted ‘Merry Christmas!’ to each other between the trenches.
At the first light of dawn on Christmas Day British and German soldiers met across no man’s land.

I think it’s more of the last shred of humanity shown before the horrors of war truly settled in between the two sides. I know it’s sad, but honestly lets just be glad that some of those guys did have at least one good Christmas in those years.

Simple History I'd argue that you're wrong. The war was, in its own special way, over by Christmas for the few Germans and Brits who decided to have this truce. Even if it was just for a few days, it was over, and there was peace for those few willing to open their minds.

Silence Oh, I remember the silence On a cold winter day After many months on the battlefield And we were used to the violence Then all the cannons went silent And the snow fell Voices sang to me from no man’s land We are all, we are all, we are all, we are all friends And today we’re all brothers Tonight we’re all friends A moment of peace in a war that never ends Today we’re all brothers We drink and unite Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white Hear carols from the trenches, we sing O holy night Our guns laid to rest among snowflakes A Christmas in the trenches, a Christmas on the front far from home Madness Oh I remember the sadness We were hiding our tears In a foreign land where we faced our fears We were soldiers Carried the war on our shoulders For our nations Is that why we bury our friends? We were all, we were all, we were all, we were all friends And today we’re all brothers Tonight we’re all friends A moment of peace in a war that never ends Today we’re all brothers We drink and unite Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white Hear carols from the trenches, we sing O holy night Our guns laid to rest among snowflakes A Christmas in the trenches, a Christmas on the front far from home We were all, we were all, we were all, we were all friends And today we’re all brothers Tonight we’re all friends A moment of peace in a war that never ends Today we’re all brothers We drink and unite Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white A Christmas on the frontline, we walk among our friends, we don’t think about tomorrow, the battle will commence When we celebrated Christmas, we thought about our friends, those who never made it home, when the battle had commenced.

The mother made them sit down and eat together. Still isn't thing close to the Christmas Truce though.

Fact: A truce right before Christmas had also happened in WW2, right before the Battle of The Bulge, where many were spared because of friends in enemy lines. The truce was ordered by Lieutenant General Lukas Heinrich Kara (who was actually part of the Allied at the time) to another German Officer, who shall not be named. In which, only Lukas among the soldiers among the truce kept fighting WW2 until it ended, sparing and saving lives from both sides alike. Lukas died in 1962 finishing his own Christmas letter to all survivng German Soldiers of WW2 by a mistaken Russian Sniper. This is what Lukas had written; [ENGLISH] "Near this Christmas, I had ordered a truce that lasted only a few hours. It atleast spared alot of us from a certain death as I shook the hand of Captain Dieter Jansen. We all pointed our weapons to our officers who told us to keep fighting. We all exchanged our possessions as some officers even traded German Weapons with Allied Weapons. I'm finishing this letter right now in 1962 on the Berlin wall. I know that everybody who participated in the truce had survived the rest of the war, but I still think that I won't see them ever again in my lifetime. - LG Lukas H. Kara "

You forgot to mention 'troop rotation". although it was several months into the war, soldiers would rotate between the front and backlines to prevent battle fatigue. There is even evidence that soldiers of this peaceful christmas never even seen thier buddies shot nor killed since they only seen artilary and dead on the feilds.

This type of stuff just fuels my belief that no matter who you're "fighting for", most guys are just regular joes who want to get back home alive, period. I have a personal story of this kind of thing. My grandfather was a teenager in the army during ww2. One of his duties while in europe was to guard german pow's. According to him, a lot of them were kids like he was who wanted the war to end just as badly as he did. One of them showed him how to play the harmonica. A lot of us are taught from a young age to believe that everyone under the enemy's flag is a monster when that just isn't the case. No matter where you go in history....ww2 era germany, civil war, modern day north korea, doesn't matter....there are plenty of people to be found who are just trying to get by and don't really have a dog in the fight at the end of the day. I always try to be mindful of that when someone tries to dehumanize an "enemy", historical or contemporary.

@@augth True, but maybe through a land exchange treaty or something (perhaps Germany could have been given another colony in Africa). This was the biggest waste of life AND money of any war I know. Heck, the only reason America joined is because Germany wouldn't stop attacking our shipping with U-Boats (and done the Zimmerman Telegram). If the Germans hadn't panicked or been so overly aggressive, we probably never join in.

There were other events recorded of smaller, peaceful events throughout the war. In Robert Graves' autobiography, he recounts fighting at a brick yard in which the enemy trenches came within mere meters of each other. At one point a rifle-mounted grenade landed in the English trench which had been removed of its explosives. It contained a note written in broken English saying that when the previous English regiment had pulled back and the Germans had occupied their trenches, they had found a puppy that the English had been taking care of. They assured the English that the dog was still fine, and they were feeding him. Throughout that battle, both sides would send messages to each other in this fashion. An important thing to note is that it became common for soldiers to not hold animosity toward each other on the opposing side but rather toward their officers, leaders, and politicians.

Silence Oh, I remember the silence On a cold winter day After many months on the battlefield And we were used to the violence Then all the cannons went silent And the snow fell Voices sang to me from no man's land We are all We are all We are all We are all friends! And today we're all brothers Tonight we're all friends A moment of peace in a war that never ends Today we're all brothers We drink and unite Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white Hear carols from the trenches We sing O Holy Night Our guns laid to rest among snowflakes A Christmas in the trenches A Christmas on the front far from home Madness (madness) Oh, I remember the sadness (Sadness) We were hiding our tears (Hiding our tears) In a foreign land where we faced our fears (Faced our fears) We were soldiers (Soldiers) Carried the war on our shoulders (Shoulders) For our nations (Nations) Is that why we bury our friends? (Bury our friends) We were all We were all We were all We were all friends (Yes, we were friends) And today we're all brothers Tonight we're all friends A moment of peace in a war that never ends Today we're all brothers We drink and unite Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white Hear carols from the trenches We sing O Holy Night Our guns laid to rest among snowflakes A Christmas in the trenches A Christmas on the front far from home We were all We were all We were all We were all friends (Yes, we were friends) And today we're all brothers Tonight we're all friends A moment of peace in a war that never ends Today we're all brothers We drink and unite Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white A Christmas on the frontline We walk among our friends We don't think about tomorrow The battle will commence When we celebrated Christmas We thought about our friends Those who never made it home When the battle had commenced

For the little anecdote... The English were not the only ones to make the Christmas truce with the Germans during the First World War, many French and Belgian soldiers did it too. However, these Trier between the French and German soldiers are less known, in particular because of the censorship of the time, and also because in France to fraternize with the Germans (who took Alsace and Lorraine from France following the defeat of my country in the Franco-Prussian War) was punishable by prison or even the death penalty. In fact there were a few truces between the French and the Germans in 1914... But it was above all in 1916 that there were the most Christmas truces between the French and the Germans, we know that thanks to the many testimonies of French soldiers who fraternized with German soldiers are available in historical archives. Besides, here is a message from a Poilu (nickname given to French soldiers) named Gervais Morillon: “There are things happening in war that you wouldn't believe. The day before yesterday, and this lasted two days in the trenches that the 90th occupies at the moment, French and Germans shook hands. This is how it happened: on the morning of the 12th, the Boches raised a white flag and yelled: “Kamarades! Kamarades! Appointment ! They ask us to surrender. We on our side, we tell them as much; no one accepts. They then come out of their trenches, unarmed, nothing at all, officer in the lead; we do the same and it was a visit from one trench to another, exchanging cigars, cigarettes, and a hundred meters away others were shooting at each other. If we're not clean, they're filthy dirty, they're disgusting, and I think they're fed up too. Since then, that has changed; we no longer communicate."
