I think she's so much better. When helping Gary to put the first layer of the roof on (last year), Mel was terrified! I was so stressed watching her, but Gary was patient and calm, guiding her through this. It was that video, when I subscribed to the channel.

Brilliant editing Melanie...this is how I get when my hubby goes on about motor racing. Love the dancing squirrel, that will have me chuckling the rest of the weekend. ....and great work on the deck guys. That will make such a difference when it rains again....and to keep the sun off the doors and windows downstairs when your summer starts.....just don't overdo it. Take your time and treat yourselves well, there's always tomorrow.

HI 👋 LUV YOU GUYS...I think the herd of Squirrels it took to produce this Vid, should receive mention in the credits. Great Build...😊 maybe stairs on the "future gararge" side might be a thought for material transfer and the kids won't have to go front door or thru the basement to get to the kitchen.... 😊

Mel, are y'all thinking about screening in the porch deck? you can put the screen on the inside of the railing, it would make it more comfortable in the summer with all the bugs...also may I suggest , you probably have already planned this but .....a couple of outdoor ceiling fans to make it more comfortable....my friend had some screen put all around the inside of her porch looked so nice and no bugs.......

Gary you should of put the first Heder board up the staggered the second bord by not cutting the second board up extra longer then the first. By staggering the second board it gives it more strength at the seams. And you would only have the last one to cut off.

A couple of suggestions for the beams. First, check your boards at the store for wonkiness before purchase. If you have limited options make sure the crown is up on the beam so it will settle down over time. Second, you should not put both beams together in this application. You have a double joint that is a weak point in the greater beam. What should have been done is one full row with the second row coming in with the second joint midspan between posts. You should have applied a bead or three of constriction adhesive then, followed up with several rows of screws. The rule is a 2x4 should have 2 screws connecting, 2x6 3 and a 2x8 4. You will want a zig zag pattern (think W). Screws applied in a straight line have a bigger chance to split along the screw line. For wonky boards, nothing is beter than a nice set of clamps to pull them in line. Lastly, what kind of screws you use to bind the beam is important. There are screws designed for this specific application. using the regular DeckMate type screws is ok but it just means more are needed. Please don't forget to install a hurricane strap from the post to the beam on each post.

OMG...Mel, you had me rolling. I am truly laughing so hard right now. Y'all are so awesome, but when Gary started describing how and why he should cut the posts a certain way, the look on your face of total confusion was classic. My wife does the same thing when I start explaining things like this. She gets the same look and just like you she hangs in there and just nods her head and smiles. The bubbles were great.

I noted that it looks like you cut more than 50% of the post in the notching. You have compromised the structure beyond the safe margin. You will want to use construction adhesive and thru bolts to secure it. You should also finish up with more blocking on all sides so the flooring has structural support on all sides.

I know you want to go for the expensive composite decking but consider this...I just replaced the wood on my family's home with a covered porch....the porch floor was almost 100yrs old and lasted that long because it was covered.....you might not need that high dollar composite since your porch will be covered. ...regular decking boards last a long time if you stain them good .

Mel, my brain was sympathising with yours when Gary was explaining what he was going to do. I would very much be wanting less explanation and just a demonstration. About this particular one inhalation of posts, I wondered...it would be helpful if you could use cargo straps to manage pulling on the post for plumbing by tightening one end of the strap around the post ant the other around a floor joists.
