The garden plot (0:00) with bamboo around the perimeter to contain the soil is what I had in my grades 5 & 6 school gardening class. My bamboo was partially split alongside so it could be held upright to build-up more soil. Pechay was my favorite cultivar because I could sell the produce at a Saturday market (tabo) 10 km away. Sold by 10 leaves held like a fan (pinaypay), each stalk pierced sidewise by coconut midriff, for 10 centavos. That was 1963-65, when a ganta of rice cost 45 centavos. Simple youthful life in a coastal barrio . I was happy with P1 I earned at the tabo. Today, P1M cash on hand does not necessarily bring me happiness.
