I’ve found a happy medium on decanting after watching a friend get very into it. I’m more practical! I decant staples that I buy repeatedly and always keep stocked. That way I can get containers that will hold the amount that I purchase. It also means it’s easy to measure for cooking. Everything else stays in the package it came in. I do have a supply of take out soup containers from Amazon. They come in quart, 1 & 2 cup, all stack together and take the same lids. That makes it easy to dump the last bit of a bag into one. I just tear or cut off a piece of the packaging and put inside to ID.

I have a small appliance tower on the L corner of my counter. I created it simply adding extra shelves. The coffee machine and capsules are there. The water kettle and tea bags. The waffle maker. The juice machine. The bakking and slicing devices. The toaster. Why? They are not taking up valuable space. It's the corner. Besides, they are stored in height using shelves. Easy access. Easy storage. Always visible. I won't forget that I like toast because the toaster is stored somewhere hidden, like I used to have. It may not look very pretty but it's very functional for us. And the rest of the counter is always free.

I had a college roommate that left her coffee stirring spoon on the counter because she would use it again later. So there was always a dried puddle of coffee on the spoon and counter. I love that you do your daughter's hair while she eats. So cute! Since I spend a lot of time in my kitchen, its the main area I decorate for the holidays.

I feel the same way about my kitchen counters. I renovated my kitchen in fall 2021. I was excited because I was able to add another small double cabinet with counters. It made sense to add these counters because this was empty space before which made no sense. Unfortunately, now this is space that just gets cluttered first. My other counters I was used to keeping clean, but these new counters is just a space that I put returns, my lunch bag, etc. It isn’t a lot of items, but it makes my kitchen feel messy. Very frustrating!

Just an FYI: I’m watching my carbs, so I write the serving size, amount of carbs and protein, and on items I use rarely, I cut out the directions for using and tape it to the container. I’m not an avid decanter, just things that have a tendency to go bad quickly, or one’s that aren’t used that much. As a person who has a small pantry with fixed shelves, it’s just less frustrating. If I try to decant a small bag of flour into a decanter that fits on the shelves, I wind up with a leftover bit so I wind up keeping the sack anyway! More decanters won’t fit, and the sack squishes in!

I have very, VERY little counter space so I CAN'T leave things on it, but that means I have one end of my kitchen table right next to a wall where things accumulate. Gotta figure that one out! Lazy Susan for my spices was the best idea for me. And I have to decant the rest of the food items in my pantry. It really does make a difference! I also pick up, straighten up, and clear my sink every night before I go to bed. It reduces anxiety! Thanks for a great video!

I agree about a lazy susan. I, too, thought there would be too much wasted space. When I decided to try it, I drew a circle on a piece of paper with the size that would fit the cupboard. I was able to get 14 bottles of vinegar and soy sauce on it! I made sure to get one with thin sides to maximize the space. I have two in the cupboard above the stove. It's been a game changer. Nothing is more than halfway back in the cupboard. And there's space in the front corner of the cupboard for something else. Everything is in the cupboard that was there before the lazy susans. I just can reach it easier. For condiments in the fridge, I use clear containers but make sure to get the long ones that fill up the space from front to back.

I store my roasting pan and water pitchers and serving platters (that I use occasionally, mostly when we host guests) in the cabinets above the refrigerator. This way there are out of the way, keeping items that are used daily more accessible aka where I don’t need to move anything out of the way. I will NOT put items outside of the rooms where they are used. If it’s for the kitchen it stays in the kitchen; and if you don’t have room in the kitchen, then you have too much stuff in that room. (I do the same for bedrooms - the extra set of sheets for each bedroom are on the top shelf of the bedroom closet. No more guessing which sheet set goes on which bed.)

There's a small 2-ft area bordered by the short bit of wall next to the closet door and a partition curtain that narrows the wide entrance from galley kitchen to living/dining/bed room in my studio apartment. My kitchen is tiny, with almost NO counter space and very few cabinets. Space for small kitchen appliances is quite limited. So that 2ft-by-2ft area has been fitted with a 7-shelf metal shelving unit with a uniform vertical shape that's a quarter-round. I use it as an 'Appliance Tree', to hold my small kitchen appliances (rice cooker, crockpot, multicooker, standing mixer, etc). This accomplishes three things: 1. It frees up counter and base cabinet space for other things (like small appliance accessories). 2. It makes it easy to grab an appliance and use (saving me from bending down and dragging out a heavy appliance stored deep in the base cabinet). 3. It makes it far more likely I'll use out the appliances (I'll remember it's there and I'll be more likely to make food from scratch at low expense instead of buying ready-mades at higher cost containing preservatives, etc). Currently, the only small kitchen appliances I leave out on the counter is the microwave, the toaster, and a small-footprint La Cuchina blender (for smoothies). Frankly, I may reorganize the fridge top to take the toaster when it's not in use; as it is, the toaster sits right next to the fridge, so I could do this without even unplugging the toaster.

My home has a beautiful good size kitchen, with gorgeous dark green granite counters (Costa Esmeralda), and deep brown custom cabinets. The only problem is all the clutter, detritus, flotsam and jetsam, crap sitting on the counters. The only things that *should* be sitting on the counters are the toaster, the electric can opener, and the cans of cat food (easy to tell if he was fed). Instead there are also boxes of k-cups, bottles of oil and vinegar, a cutting board, two utensil containers (that should give you a clue as to how much stuff is there), old mail and receipts, three spoon rests, three jars for used cooking oil, a roll of paper towels, and a partridge in a pear tree. Mind you, I don’t live there anymore, but my best friend does, and I’m there several times a week (he’s an excellent, very generous cook; I think he was an Italian mother in a former life). I get so frustrated being in that kitchen. It’s very difficult to prepare anything. My apartment kitchen has 24” of counter space. I have my blender, which I use every morning, a can of protein powder (too big for the cupboards), and a roll of paper towels. Maybe we’ll tackle the house kitchen this weekend. A girl can dream, can’t she?

I love having my regular use appliances out, and my spices, and my knives, etc etc. I did the ClutterBug test and realised I am a very visual organiser. Just the thought of putting those away in cupboards or drawers makes me anxious. Once I realised this about myself, I realised why I always had mess and left things out. So I started installing open shelves, wire baskets hung on the walls, a magnetic knife organiser on the wall, etc. Basically, it's all got its own home now, up on the wall and I can see it. I guess more of an old farm kitchen style. And for the first time in my life, my home is kinda tidy. Who knew?!!!!

I would say that if you are running out of storage space, ask yourself what the three largest appliances/gadgets are that you store in the kitchen. It could be your mixer, your crockpot, a pressure cooker, etc. Now, if any of those things are things you only use rarely then, perhaps, they don't need to be stored in the kitchen at all. Maybe they could be in a closet elsewhere in the house, maybe in your garage. And maybe, if you would only use it once a year or less, perhaps you wouldn't miss it at all if you got rid of it. I decided to donate my crockpot after being married a few years because I only used it like once a year for the church chili cookoff. I'm just not a crockpot person.

I only keep my toaster oven/air fryer and my kitchen aid mixer on the counter tops. Although I'm currently going back and forth with my food processor. The mixer is out because I have no cupboard space large enough to store it and I don't have a basement so no overstock or storage area. Almost everything is decanted because it's easier to store, but also for 2 other reasons, the incessant ant problem I've been having and, being single, I don't use staples up quickly.

My brother had bought a 2 tier dish rack in which we used to air dry our dishes. It limits us from stacking dishes to the brim throughout the day when we should be putting them away once dried. I really need to go around the house and gather up all spices and sauces. They're split into 3 locations with no rhyme or reason. I own a set, my brother's have their own sets, and my mom has her set... 😬

Ok. I love removing foods from their original containers and putting them in the storage container. But then how to store the packaged foods until the the food in the storage container is used up? I do like to buy foods long before i need them, due to the stores likely not having them in stock when I need them. Plus, I like taking advantage of foods when they are on sale. My kitchen is not very big and have no pantry to store things. And even if i did, organizing the store packaged foods until ready to put them in their storage containers for use, is still an issue. I have considered taking one of the upstairs bedrooms and removing the furniture and turn it into a big pantry storage room. lol Though it would be pretty inconvenient.

I am not too keen about decanting the spices?? I don’t see much point to it. I have all the same brand spices in the same sized jars they are already in from the store. Then I built a spice rack that goes on the wall on my kitchen bench and it holds 10 jars on each shelf and is 3 rows high. It was pretty simple to make out of cheap pine and then I stained it. It is one of my most useful kitchen devices and all of the labels on the jars are readable. The way you did it you can only see the front row from the way it was filmed?? How do you know what is in the back rows with out pulling them out one by one. What is the point of that?? Sorry to sound negative!

Kallie, great video as usual! I would like to ask what you put on top of your decanted brown sugar to keep it soft?

It's a ceramic/terracotta "Brown Sugar Keeper" or "brown sugar bear" - you can find them in specialty kitchen supply stores, or online. They're great!

Love your storage ideas. What do you use for dish draining? I’m tired of a bulky dish drainer on the counter all the time. Thanks.

I switched to an over-the-sink dish drainer and it's been life changing! They're like $90 on Amazon, but so worth it!

I have considered doing this decanting but doesn't it limit the ability to buy different things? Because what if you buy a new/different thing that doesn't fit into the pre-sized containers? Also, how do you decant big bottles of mouth wash?
