I totally agree with all of this. I no longer enjoy watching "My favorite amazon purchases of the year", etc., because we really don't need 99% of it. The irony of it all - is that there are these massive hauls, and then massive decluttering. The cycle continues.

True. There are so many KZbin channels that do huge haul videos, then huge declutter videos, lather, rinse, repeat. Or say they are anti p.r, but somehow put their name on literally every p.r list in existence.

When I buy something new, I donate or throw away an item. Last year, I decluttered our Christmas items. Except for the tree, everything must fit in organizers under my bed. No more schlepping to the attic, risking life and limb to drag large boxes down the stairs.

Great video! I agree 100%. As I've gotten older I find I just don't need a ton to be happy. I've simplified my skincare, makeup, clothes and home decor . It has made me so much more appreciative of what do I have and its just nice to have everything I need and nothing that I don't. I love donating items or giving them to those I know need them. It's a double blessing.

Same!! It’s definitely a mid-life thing for many of us. I’ll be 56 in April and this urge to simplify has gotten so strong in the past couple years. But unfortunately, my husband and I just moved in with his elderly mother to look after her, and she’s an incorrigible hoarder and lives for BOGO sales. 😒

My husband and I also have the rule that if we're looking at purchasing something expensive, we never make the decision on the same day that we saw the thing. We always sleep on it. If they can give us a great deal today, they can give us the same great deal tomorrow. If we ever break that rule, we almost always end up regretting it!

Yes! This is also my method. When my immediate reaction to something is 'ooooh!! want!', I walk away. If I still really really want it a week or a month later, then I'll go get it, but many times I also find that I don't want it *that* much.

A friend once told me "if you like it - put it in your cart and and continue to check other things." Later look at what you have in your cart and ask yourself "do you REALLY / REALLY need this?' I do that and realize that I don't need it and put it back. I feel so good. It has worked for me.

I stopped watching Amazon/Sephora/Ikea/Dollar Tree/ you name it “hauls”. I feel more and more like I’m just watching a commercial. I have unsubscribed from a lot of content because of this. It’s become boring and repetitive. We moved to another state in 2022 and downsized big time, so I went through the gamut of emotions decluttering and the last thing I want to do is add more things I don’t need. I only have one bin of Christmas decor now besides the tree. We used to have at least 10 bins. We are very selective about our purchases these days. Great topic to start the New Year!

Thank you for sharing your experiences, wisdom and the things you learn along the way. ps. Your arthritis video rang a bell here. One more condition to add to my health issues list. Yes. I often say, “I’m not available, but thanks for the invitation” The only issue with that is then it guarantees you’ll continue to get invited for similar events in the future (like her Pampered Chef party example), so use with caution. A simple, thanks but I’m unavailable is sufficient. It’s a subtle discouragement to continue similar invitations. Don’t say “I appreciate being included” unless you truly do, and want future invitations.

Great video! For Christmas this year, I was a bit ruthless with some of the things I got. I HATE polyester, and I received 3 items made with it, so I asked my friend if she wanted any of them and she did like the one my MIL gave me... ok, so one down. If my MIL asks me about it, I'm not going to lie... she knows I hate polyester, so I'll tell her again, gently, why, but that my friend loves it, so I gave it to her to enjoy. The other two were from my husband, who knows I hate polyester. Turns out, he bought them from Ama- zon and the description for one lied and said it was 100% cotton (tag said polyester) and one was "flannel" (it wasn't anything close to flannel, and 100% polyester!) How are they allowed to lie like that?! Anyway, I sweetly told my husband thank you so much for the thought, but I probably won't wear them because they make me uncomfortable, sweaty and give me static electricity, so he returned them. My husband gave me the money he had spent on them and said, "go buy something you like, hon." I think the more we do this with loved ones, the more they will get the hint. They need to understand that I am not going to keep something in my home that will only cause me misery just because it was from them. I always tell people if I got them something they don't like, I have no problem if they want to return it... I won't be hurt or anything! If they're so offended as to never give me another present, great! I can buy my own things.

Brilliant plan! I made the decision a few years ago to spend money on experiences and memory making. Nothing comes in the house unless it is essential & has a designated home. We had a massive yard sale and put that money in the Memory Making jar. This year we went through everything after Christmas and found loads more to donate to our Annual Church Rummage sale! It has made life so much easier and less chaotic. No moving junk about the counter and floors to clean any longer. Everything in the basement storage room is labelled so we know exactly what is in each bin. Just be a a shelf isn’t full does not mean we fill it!

My New Year’s resolution was to stop using Amazon. I’ve been using the actual retailer websites or Target/Walmart. Since you have to pay for shipping (typically), you really think about whether you need the item or not. Or you wait until you need enough of their products to reach free shipping. Saved hundreds in Jan so far alone. I also never realized how overwhelming all the boxes arriving were. They would end up not fitting in the recycle bin and sitting in the garage.

I have been on the simplification journey for just over 4 years amd can still struggle with impulse shopping. I'm getting better though, and one of the ideas that somebody on YT suggested was to admire the item you are looking at, as if it was in a gallery or museum, and then move on. Often, that's enough to satisfy your craving for it. I did that with a nail polish the other day and I don't regret leaving it in the shop as I have two other similar ones at home that are perfectly useable. Yes, it's only a small and cheap item, but costs can soon accumulate. Wishing you a happy and blessed 2024. 😊

I recently retired after 22 years of nursing. I realize I have enough products to open my own medspa s; more clothes than I will ever need. Living in Southern California we mostly live in exercise clothes! I love to shop but have replaced tjmaxx and home goods with resale shops. I visit them frequently but still shop with restraint. One thing that helps me declutter is thinking about animals in shelters that could be using my surplus blankets or comforters; homeless people that could use my extra clothing or shoes and even the stuff from hotels I collect and never use. I can’t help but think half of those hauls go back! Here is an idea for you or someone; when sales start like nordstroms annual do a video categorizing if I only had 200 dollars I would buy this; 100 one of these; etc. instead of everyone encouraging massive spending. I saw one influencer stating 2400 was good for a designer purse….not in my world! Thanks for all you do.

Very well thought out video. Made me think. I especially like the idea of not giving reasons for a no. I have had to learn that. Thank you

Why is that so hard??? I think we are so conditioned to justify our reasons and we just don’t have to!! I still struggle but I’m way better!!

I have some questions I ask myself- "Do I need it? Will I use it? Where will I put it? When I ask myself these questions I would say that 95% of the time I don't buy it.

Some decluttering needs to be strategic. I found out my local consignment store began accepting Christmas\winter items on October 16th. I began in August pulling out one box of holiday items at a time and looking through winter clothing each week and selecting the items I no longer used or wanted. By October, I had 6 boxes of holiday/winter items to consign. If I had waited till October to gather items, I’d have been overwhelmed.

Before buying an item on sale, I ask myself "would you pay full price for this?" The answer to that question alone says a lot.

Yes, that's an amazing question. I dare say most of our "deals" shopping would be stopped.

I enjoyed your video lots of valid good touchpoints. I actually stopped watching and eventually unsubscribed from pretty much all the beauty community. Its basically 90% consumerism and the rest isnt anything new i haven’t seen or heard before. 🤷‍♀️ probably just changing as a person.

I love these tips, thank you for sharing them with us. I particularly liked the tip of taking a picture and putting on list. What list do you use in your phone and how do you put the pic there? I am 76 and struggling with technology. You don’t have to answer that but I need to find out now that I know that is a thing. Have a blessed and healthy 2024!

I truly HATE to shop. To the point that I don't shop even when I need things. I can think of 50 reasons not to go shopping. I hate online shopping too as it's often a pain since things often do not fit or look like the photos and have to be returned.

Ways I simplify my life. Cleaning as I go Meal prep and plan Always have extra bags in my backpack Delete social media Delete online shopping apps, and rebate apps. Change my KZbin feed to not see hauls every video, following a huge declutter. Cut all toxicity out, regardless of source. Keep private matters private.

Stopped watching HSN and QVC. Some friends and I imitate the hosts. They create silly ideas to purchase items. We all need to THINK before we buy. Do we really NEED or just WANT it. On you tube many people there are promoting to get things, example dollar tree. We all have too much.( clothes, makeup, shoes, handbags etc.Christmas decorations, don't be tempted by mood of holiday, more important is reason for the season .Cancel subscriptions. Use up what's in freezer and pantry. What's most important is the roof over our head, utilities, food, possible medical concerns gas for car Save, save. I'd rather have the money to enjoy a Vacation or repairs on car or house necessities. Everything else doesn't maintain. Your quality of life. These are my thoughts

I stopped watching fabric haul videos by sewists. I never really even liked a lot of the fabrics, and youtube sewists are notorious for having and encouraging fabric stashes without planning garments for the fabric. I used up and donated my stash and it hasnt hampered my creativity at all buying for each project. And it saves a ton of money not having a stash.

The same thing happens in the quilting and cross stitch community. Beautiful things but I have enough! I like to watch some for a little inspiration or company but have cut way down to avoid the temptation and stick to my goals and values.

Great advice! My problem is skincare. Every time I see something new, I think Oh I better try that. My goal this year is to stick to a good basic skincare and stop thinking I'm going to find that magic serum or cream that's going to magically take 20 years off my face😂
