About 45 minutes in. You are creating a good space for people to think about their phrasing from an experiential point of view. I felt right there that you were inviting me to compare different interval choices with you. "Find those notes." Yes. Perfect. And then the "point it to the guitar"... visual. Thanks for the "find the half steps." Brought it back to listening... Nice.

I studied with a great bass player in 1983. We were working on jazz tunes. The changes were flying by and I thought you should try to play over every chord. I kept messing up. He told me to let the chords do the work. Abercrombie said the same thing in 1994. "heres a chord. How do I put all these scales in? You cant. It pointless." Made my life easier as far as improvising. Im better today at it because I dont care. I use my ear.

I like to think simple. A7 alt... I just play my "A7 alt stuff" and/or my "A7 stuff". Not really thinking scales, just looking at chord grip shapes and relying on my vocabulary. I can't tell you what scale I'm playing unless I stop and analyse what I just played and figure it out. Very simple thinking; grips and vocabulary.

Rick, I think you've got one of the best music education channels on KZbin, but some of your videos, like this one, can be a bit frustrating. We had to wait 25 minutes before you even talked about soloing, and then it was basically two tips. One is “two-ing the five” as you called it (E Dorian over A7), which is jazz 101 (and I should know, because jazz 101 is about the level I'm at, LOL). The other tip was to play Dorian a half-step above the root note when soloing over an alt chord (Bb Dorian over A7alt). But you then conceded that the Ab note in Bb Dorian is problematic over A7, so you might be better served using a major seventh there. That just gives you Bb melodic minor. So you're essentially playing the seventh mode of Bb melodic minor: the good old altered scale. I'm not sure how this simplifies anything, and either way this material could have been covered in more like 10 minutes.

+Stephen Gregory that's why they have a slider button on the video. Click it until you get to the part that you want to see. Do I really have to say that? Don't be a taker bro. You know what that is? The person that complains when someone makes 355 free videos and has never contributed anything like buying my book to my channel. I rarely say anything about this stuff but comments like yours make you sound like a whiny baby. I'd much rather have someone be an a-hole than some crybaby that can't use a mouse to fast forward a video. How do you like that?
@HTSITYS7 жыл бұрын
Rick you are right. Stephen you are right aswell. Firstly, I absolutely appreciate every bit of your knowledge you are sharing Rick. Its amazing, and your community loves you for doing it. The KZbin culture can seem quite unthankful sometimes, especially considering when people like you do it for free and dont ask for anything in return. But I also believe that every criticism can help one improve. So, the take away of Stephens comment, I think, is that you could improve the enjoyment and the learning process of your viewers by: a) shortening the intro and/or b) put on some time stamps, telling people where to find what, below your video You know, people on KZbin (including myself unfortunaly;) are not used to having information presentend in videos of 30+mins anymore. So thats why they might find themselves easily lost or even "frustrated". That might be millenium curse. ;) I think modifiying you videos a bit, like written above, would definitely help improve your channel getting more views and attention on KZbin aswell as your community Best, Dave
@waterboy514 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. I enjoy most of Rick's videos, but it is easily understandable to see why a person would be frustrated when they thought they'd be watching an hour long video on a topic, when it takes a half hour to get to the topic indicated in the title

not liking the sound of the Axefx. no matter how often I hear a fully digital modeled guitar sound it is just not right to my ears. and I really want that to work - an "everything box" for electric guitar sounds. I really think that would be great! but no matter what they come up with, Kempers, Helix etc, it just doesn't sound right. I suspect it's something to do with the actual analog preamp part of those things. before the signal is worked on by the digital modelling, and before it is converted, there must be a short analog signal path where the guitar signal is of course pre amplified to a line level. I use a string of digital pedals in the fx loop of my Maz38, but the guitar gets preamplified by the front end of the Maz first.

Actually the Schenkerian analysis refers to exploring the correlation between musical proficiency and facial hair: try to find a picture of Rudolf Schenker in the 80's and you'll immediately notice that the tone is in the moustache.

@axe2grind911a6 жыл бұрын
Better cure is take CONTROL of it. It's a natural ability, this 'ear worms' thing. Challenge yourself to "change the channel". Start by trying to hear another song that you know well. With practice, you can mentally play songs in your head any time you want. The fact that it's already happening is the proof you can do it with intention. Just requires lots of focus.
@troublingleaf6 жыл бұрын
Researchers need to start running tests once they've found a "cure", best way out of it is to listen to the song start to end, they usually get stuck in your head because you can't finish it, if that's not it then aknowledge what it is about the song you like, you might not like the song as a whole but if it's stuck in your head you probably like something about the loop it's stuck on!
