You are welcome Jack. And I would like to add your reactions are so good you make me feel like I owe you money. Your reactions are that quality good. I know your reactions deal more with the production side of the music & I truly appreciate that trust me, but you do capture the lyrical essense & state of mind of the songs in my opinion very well too. Keep it up.❤️

@Andy G Yeah, I think a lot black American music, especially soul and r&b, have in the UK. You'll notice a lot of UK white, blue-eyed soul singers often get mistaken as black american artists until you see what they look like lol, and they take that as a huge compliment...

Yep Jack, the music video shows the lead singer Mick Hucknall walking through the beautiful english countryside & Whitby Abbey. He was reminiscing about his chilhood & the difficult relationship he had with his father. The scene at the end when he was on the train was at and around Goathland railway station on the Nork Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Hi Jack great reaction…. Mick is from a little town called Denton in Manchester England, just 10 minutes from me. This was recorded in 1985, so 38 years old and the video was recorded by n a little seaside fishing village called Whitby over on the east coast of England. Mick Hucknall is the lead singer and still sounds incredible, I saw them live last year in his home town, he can still hit those notes! ❤

A few things to mention about Simply Red: (1) I remember that while riding on a Bus in Detroit, a Man started singing this song loud enough that it made the Bus Driver tell Him that He would only move the Bus when the Guy stopped singing! He stopped, and We All finally started moving along. (2) If You want to see Lead Singer Mick Hucknall in a different light, then You can check out the Music Video for the song 'Stars'. He really changed His Look in this one! And (3) When I worked in a Café in Downtown Detroit in the 1990s, I saw the Manager great none other than Mick Hucknall and Lead Bassist and Singer Steve Lewinson into the restaurant, called Café Martinique'. Mick smiled at Me and a Coworker behing the counter while the Owner and Manager named George n'Namdi (He sold Art there as well) spoke with Them. George asked what brought Them here to Detroit and Café Martinique, and They admitted that They wanted to go Sightseeing in Detroit while They were performing there, and in the process They got lost Downtown, so They both decided to come into the Café to rest a bit a have a drink. So that's all that I have to mention about Simply Red for now! Peace, Jack!

Sad song. He was abandoned by his mother at age 3 and had a distant, disapproving father (particularly of his choice to do music). Holding on probably refers to, in spite of his circumstances he would not give up and hoped for a better future.

When I found out Mick wrote the song when he was 17 it blew me away. "Holding Back the Years" is the third single from SR's debut album, Picture Book (1985); it hit #1 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was also nominated for a Grammy (Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals). Please react to Simply Red - "Stars" and "Sunrise" (my faves!).

Jack, Mick started writing this at age 17. It's inspired by his true life story where, unfortunately, his mother left him at age 3. How about the harmon muted trumpet? Best choice ever for this song. You can hear the Miles Davis influence as Tim Kellet serenaded us in a very rare mid 80's pop song trumpet solo. Excellent! "If You Don't Know Me By Now" is an AMAZING cover & really shows off Mick's vocals.
