Never thought about it from a “reduced variety” perspective, that resonated with me! I tend to drop what I see as “extras” to finish other more foundational things, but I feel that leads to burnout.

Thank you Sonya for this video. I am praying for your healing. My mom-best friend went home to be with the Lord in November. I have been trying to show myself grace as I am truly grieving as are my two girls. I really needed this!!

I have not yet experienced homeschooling from the teacher side, but I never remember my parents cramming anything into the “current” school year. We did a variation of year-round schooling and while there were things we left unfinished it was usually because it wasn’t working for us, we never had a hard and fast date for the “school year” being done. On the flip side my parents didn’t “graduate” my brother until about 3 weeks before he started college because he joined me on college study abroad for the summer and they counted it as two of his concurrent classes (he did several other concurrent classes the previous year too and had 20 credit hours when he started freshman year).

Thank you for this! Had a baby in November and we took off, and planned to take off, both Nov&Dec. But more things happened and we are so behind even with it scheduled in! We are dropping one history book even though it hurts! Haha Thanks for reminding me we will do it again in a few years. God bless you and your family. You are in my prayers!

I have just discovered this channel and boy have I realized how we’ve missed-stepped in raising our children and developing good habits and encouraging their willpower. Unfortunately, that lack is really starting to show in our 16 year old. I pray to the Lord that we’re not late and can recover at least some important lessons. I would appreciate anything that you can point us to that is helpful in this situation? Where we’ve missed installing key steps and habits and ideas, but are convicted to do and improve something (clearly we’re the ones who’ve been lax, but we don’t want our oldest to suffer for our mistakes and to choose what the world offers instead)

Thank you for reaching out with your question, be encouraged it is never too late for a person to learn new good habits, even as an adult! Here is a helpful blogpost on starting habit training with older children: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/habits-q-and-a-starting-with-older-children-dealing-with-negativity/ SCM recommends a few resources for personal development as children move into the middle school and high school years. SCM has student editions of Charlotte Mason's book "Ourselves" which have all of the content contained in that volume broken down into several books and presented in a format to help a student walk through the resource. If your student has not read any of these books before, we would recommend that you start with "Self-Knowledge" even though it is listed as grade 7, it will not be "too young" and is important to the overall study to start at this point. simplycharlottemason.com/planning/curriculum-guide/personal-development/ It sounds like you have a strong faith, continue to lean on God during this season and pray for your child's heart. You can present him with these resources, good ideas, change expectations and routines in your home, and rely on the Holy Spirit to convict your child's heart in the same way that your heart has been convicted of the need for this change. Here is an encouraging post on God's role in habit training. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/god-and-habit-training/ If you are interested in habit training resources for adults as well, here are some great resources. Thank you so much for this. We finally finished phonics instruction program the of March, so we started a LA curriculum early April. Obviously, we're not going to finish an entire school year program in a couple of months. 😊 We also just started a Charlotte Mason approach in April and we're loving it so far. ❤ Planning to continue this next year.
