Sonya, God has gifted you incredibly with the gift of wisdom and teaching! Thank you for your many videos that talk about, not just the surface how-to’s, but the cultivating of souls. Not just our children’s, but first our own! This is the most important work, not the curriculum choices! And this is definitely what I need in this time. (Also need to figure out the curriculum for the year! 😊) Praying for you when you come to mind in this season of illness! You are a blessing!

Authority and Obedience are first and foremost Biblical. Consistent reading/studying specifically both Isaiah and Romans, (but all scripture completely,) as a family, has been a blessing in this area. All authority and obedience is exercised under God. All equally responsible to Trust and Obey, by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the roles we are placed in. Humble servant obedience, coupled with quick repentance and forgiveness, is a prayer on my lips often as a mother. -Danya

I am from the UK and find this really interesting. I see where you are coming from but prefer to think of learning as collaborative. I think authority and obedience, unfortunately, have very negative connotations because of all of the historical abuses of authority.

What is the appropriate thing to do when you have a 5 or 6 year old who is constantly interrupting your reading to comment on what's being read?
@SimplyCharlotteMason
@SimplyCharlotteMason 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mandi. This can be a frustrating situation! It is important to set up your expectations right before reading. You may need to gently remind the child daily for a while. You will also need to have a consequence established and shared with the little one when sharing your expectations. I ask my little ones to place their hand on my (it may be my leg or shoulder) while I am reading if they have a thought to share. I will then work to find an appropriate moment to pause (this may be a little while). This may be needed, especially when you have a wide span of ages due to a little ones attention span and needing to slowly grow it. If they are the only child being read to, you can let them know that if they interrupt the reading, you will no longer be able to read that story during that that time (for that day only). If they are sitting with their siblings, you may need to ask them to leave the room so that their siblings can continue hearing the reading. Once the reading is done, I like to say something along the lines of, "I am so sorry you missed out the reading! It was incredibly interesting when..." or "It was funny when..." to tantalize them for future readings.

my daughter is very "rebellious " what is the next step when she dosen't want to obey , what to do
@SimplyCharlotteMason
@SimplyCharlotteMason 7 ай бұрын
Hi, Thank you for reaching out with this question! Here are a few recommendations. 1. When starting to target the habit of obedience, start small. Choose a very simple command that she is capable of doing as well as you can choose fun commands (e.g. giving directions that are part of an anticipated activity). The goal here is to teach her about obedience. When we are teaching a new habit we want to provide our children with living examples of this idea, set them up for success, and walk them through forming that new habit at the level that they are ready for. Here is a post that is helpful in thinking through the difficulty of the command. Even if you think she "should" be able to obey a given directive at this time, if she is not, we want to make it easy at the beginning and reinforce the correct path of obedience rather than making it difficult at the start and having her choose her familiar path of disobedience which is already easier for her at this point. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/5-ways-to-work-on-the-habit-of-obedience/ 2. In an age appropriate way, it will also be helpful to her to sit down and have a conversation about your expectations and consequences for disobedience. Consequences we can tend to think of as always being a punishment, which they can be, but not always. In a Charlotte Mason approach, we strive to use educative consequences as much as possible. Our goal is for our children to learn to choose the right path the next time, essentially in this case learn to obey. Here is a helpful post on consequences: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/habits-q-amp-a-consequences/ 3. This post is a collaboration that Sonya did with Ginger Hubbard. Ginger has a lot of parenting resources and practical advice on how to deal with obedience. As parents it can be easy to fall into a pattern of interacting with our children where we are giving them too many chances to obey which leads them to think that they have a choice and we don't really mean it yet. This may not be the case with your child, however the ideas presented in this post can be very helpful in thinking through how you as the parent have responded to the disobedience in the past and how this may (or may not) be contributing to the struggle that you are currently having. Here is a link to that post that goes into more detail. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/6-discipline-mistakes-parents-make/

I have a 6 year old son on the spectrum. He is quite smart and verbal. That said I'm starting his homeschooling shortly. Every non-preferred activity causes rebellion both verbally and acting lazy or running out of the room. I have done a poor job holding consequences and want to improve. Do you have any thoughts?
