The two other "strap things" you found I think are to connect to front and help carry your weapon. They came on my vulcan too.

Hmm, been keen on this sac to replace my 25 year old Vulcan. Notice that it lacks compression straps on the sides, under the sidepockets.... That is a shame, like to have it all nice and tight.

then get the atlas instead. it's basically the same as the crusader, except that it doesn't have the molle webbing in the front, but it DOES have those compression straps. Aside from the bungee cord that separates the top and bottom compartments in that one there's also a heavy-duty velcro that you can open up to move the entire flap out of the way

I actually just found another "discrete pocket" inside the top pocket where the strapings were found, along with two other strap thingys i still doesn´t know what they are for ^^

The two side pockets, once removed, can zip together. Then those straps that come loose with the pack connect to the back of the side pockets and the whole thing is a 20l day pack
