Clearly explained. To clarify, not all stocks pay dividends, nor are they entitled to. Second, as share prices drop and earnings drop, companies have the right to adjust dividends to a lower $ amount or totally cut off dividends. That's the reality of owning shares if they start to perform poorly and lose stock value. The company cannot afford to give out 20% dividends for a $5.00 stock as that will bankrupt them, in a real world situation. So this is practically not feasible. Also, I don't know if historically dividend % returns will be 8% or more.
@niravkumar_patel5 жыл бұрын
@Jacob David, Well said. @Simply Investing, This rule doesn't apply to FTR vs WM case as well. WM is trading 100+ and paying a dividend. FTR had a good ratio(current Yield > avg yield) in 2016 time frame & closed to bankruptcy.

If we are assuming that the dividend stays the same, why do we not just look at the average price of the share and compare with the current price of the share. And if current < average the stock is undervalued?
@gaurangbhatt96627 жыл бұрын
Reian Taank because the price also reflects the company. For example, Fitbit is down significantly in the past 5 years, that does not mean they are under valued but rather they are corrected by the market. This advice is total BS because it depends only on price and dividand. If there is no apparent problem with the company an 8% growth is generally expected. That means a rise of 8% in the stock price is generally expected. That means that the average yield over 5 years should be above current yield and so every healthy company is overvalued. This doesn't take future growth into account one bit nor does it take into account the company's direction (see fit bit to see its on its way to bankruptcy, but it's dividends if it had any would be way above the 5 year avg). In the video, IBM is used as an example but it doesn't take into account IBMs future direction. It's share price has dropped over 5 years. Can it pivot? Sure but you'll have to figure that out for yourself. If you need investing advice you just have to ask yourself what companies you see still being relavent 20 years from now. Don't go all in, hedge your bets. Also find the singularity in the compition. For example, electric vehicals are the future, that's pretty widely accepted now, and there are tons of companies building them... But they will all need batteries, that market will flourish. Then you can say which battery maker should I invest in, there are so many! The truth is, most battery makers will do well because every company would not rely on just one supplier. The other singularity in the chain is lithium ion, where does it come from? What will happen when demand for batteries spikes spiking the demand for lithium ion? Tldr: a company on its way to bankruptcy is "undervalued" according to the video
@cjcurry24467 жыл бұрын
gaurang bhatt That was some really great insight for a young trader
@InvestingAlex6 жыл бұрын
Gaurang bhatt, you are assuming that for your example, lithium/battery producing companies would grow because of the demand for it in the future. How can you be so sure that other investors have not thought about your idea and that the markets have already priced in the future growth of those companies? So, you might have been too late. Maybe you are too early and that average consumers cannot afford to buy and maintain electric cars for decades to come and you will not see price increases for those battery companies. That is what you called speculation, not investing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this just a different way of saying whether the current share price is higher or lower than the average share price over the last 5 years? You're just taking the dividend and dividing it by share price. So the dividend yield, unless the actual dividend per share changes, really only tells you if the current price is higher or lower than its average over the last 5 years. Why would anyone base any part of their trading on whether the stock is currently higher or lower than it was 5 years ago? It tells you nothing about the future potential of the stock.
@Justin-yb6mf6 жыл бұрын
Michael Gaske no, only if the company never increases their dividend over that period

"Why would anyone base any part of their trading on whether the stock is currently higher or lower than it was 5 years ago?" He said the average dividend yield over 5 years. If the dividend yield is over the average you'd be buying in a high market. It's best to buy stocks when they are NOT overvalued. If the current price is higher than the average of what one should buy, expect it to drop again soon as it did for the past 5 years. Yeah, past doesn't equate to future performance. That's the crux of all investing. Take his advise with a grain of salt.

This really makes no sense. You can't say the company is undervalued if the current dividend yield is higher than the average dividend yield. You are totally ignoring the risk of the underlying company. Maybe the current dividend yield is very high because the company just announced major losses but is maintaining its dividend policy for the time being (as dividends are often 'sticky'). This is just stupid.

I research mature blue-chip companies that have a history of consecutive dividend increases like Coca-Cola 54-yrs, 3M 59-yrs, Target 49-yrs, Walmart 44-yrs, JNJ 55-yrs, ADP 42-yrs....and there's more like these. Companies that "prop up" their dividend even when their EPS is dropping don't last very long, and would easily fail Rule 7and Rule 8.

A great many of these stocks are going to be unsuitable - how does one easily eliminate them, and filter this list to reduce the number of stocks one should look at more closely? So invest in undervalued or overvalued?
@viperx72627 жыл бұрын
The more undervalued a company is, the greater your return, and the less risk it has. Its the opposite for overvalued stock.
@sblijheid7 жыл бұрын
Noooo!!!! You should find out why the stock is under valued first. It could be that it's being slapped with law suits, or in need of filing for bankruptcy. The video is too simple.
@guntodd6 жыл бұрын
+S Blijheid agree. There are far too many reasons for a stock price to go down, thus cause the current dividend yield to go up. His formula is good and basic, but investor should know more about why it’s undervalued. It’s possible that the stock will continue to go down further.

Can you evaluate an ETF with this method
@viperx72627 жыл бұрын
No, you have to look at the individual stocks its holding and determine if the sector or themed ETF is overvalued. When interest rates were lowered for example, all the ETF's that focused on dividends, Utilities, and REITS were really over valued because the individual names in those ETFS went through the roof. I probably dumbed that down way too much, but yea for anyone else who wants to know.

one thing you forget to mention is the dividend is cut from the stock price. let's say the stock price is $100 and the dividend is 5%. 5% of $100 is $5. when they give you dividend, they give you $5, but your stock is worth $95. in the end it is the same as before. so stop spending too much time on how much company give you dividend.
@Seppe22427 жыл бұрын
Yes, but before you would have spent $100 for that $5. NOW you spend $95 for $5. A better deal, yes?
@nickaclaus7 жыл бұрын
But your NAV was decreased by $5 so essentially it is a wash. High-yielding utility shares, for instance, have grown 70% more expensive in just this past year based on their price/earnings ratios, a common gauge of stock valuations. This makes it less likely that dividend payers can continue to produce market-beating returns. So maybe it’s time to look at firms that don’t throw off income but reinvest in themselves instead.
@preservationoffire6 жыл бұрын
how do u figure out the daily div. yield now?
@SimplyInvesting6 жыл бұрын
The "daily dividend yield" or "current dividend yield" can be calculated by dividing the Annual Dividend by the Current Share price. For an even quicker method, just use Yahoo Finance, Google Finance, or any other site that provides stock quotes. Google Finance shows the value as "Div Yield", Yahoo Finance shows the value as "Forward Dividend Yield".

Thank you for the video, but I am a bit confused here. Does this mean if I buy a stock at a sufficiently low price, I should hope for further decline in stock prices for larger dividends and dread the rise in stock as it can mean less dividend is paid?
@SimplyInvesting6 жыл бұрын
Once you purchase a stock, your purchase price does not change. Subsequent dividend increases will increase "your dividend yield based on your purchase price". For example, you buy shares at $50, and the dividend is $2.50, your div yield is 5%, next year the dividend goes to $3.50, your div yield based on your purchase price is now 7%. Each dividend increase means more money in your pocket. Over the long-term dividend increases help to support a raising stock price. In 2000 I bought TRP at $13.40 and the div was $0.80, today the div is $2.76 and the stock price is $50.

What if the Current Div is higher than the average yield but not by much, say 4.48 current 4.66 average but both P/E and P/B meet the requirements. Is the stock still overvalued? Also are we looking annually or quarterly for these numbers?
