Fred Astaire said this was the best performance he’s seen on screen. He wasn’t wrong.

It's from the film Stormy Weather, released in 1943. Cab Calloway and his band are terrific! The Nicholas Brothers did the dance sequence in one take with little to no practice. They later taught dance and Michael and Janet Jackson were among their pupils. Fred Astaire said they were his heroes and that this number was the “greatest dance and music” sequence in the history of cinema. Mikhail Baryshnikov declared they were the most “amazing dancers” he’d ever seen.

When I was a little girl and stayed at my grandma's house, I used to watch TV late at night. One night I saw this movie on late night TV, and I dreamed about that dance scene for maybe 50 years until I found out what it was. Beautiful....

There is a longer cut where Cab comes back out and everyone gets up and starts dancing. All are African-American service members and their ladies. Dressed-up and so classy!

One comment about Cab Calloway and his band. Of all the big bands of this era there was only three absolute best in the world. Cab's Band and the others were Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands. No other band even came close to perfection of these 3. Not Glen Miller, Dorset, Les Brown and all the others none of them came close. It's to bad they are long gone. But thank God we have them on video and recordings. As far as the dancers go the Nicholas Brothers were the best of the best. God bless them all.

Loved that. Cab was the king of scat. The Nicholas Brothers were the best tap dancers in the 40's. Fred Altair said it was the best dance sequence on film. Stormy Weather is a classic. Lena Horn was so beautiful, and a great singer.😊 much love from California.

Love this music and the dancing. With this music you don't need a gym. The dancing or moving to it, is pure exercise. Now for the Nicholas Brothers, we'll what can I say? After the first split I went for an ice pack. It hurt watching. Love your reaction.

1943. This was the Cotton Club goes to Hollywood essentially. The whole crew is there! Cab Calloway, Lena Horne, Nicholas Brothers etc. etc. etc. Here's one amazing fact for you: THIS WHOLE SEQUENCE WAS DONE IN ONE TAKE. That's right, they did only one take of this. That's all Maestros Cab, Fayard and Harold needed. That's how GOOD they were!

@@SimplyKSimone There was one time when Cab Calloway was working with Al Jolson in The Singing Kid. During production, Cab had been given a dressing room inferior to Jolson’s. When Al Jolson heard about it, he went to the studio head and threatened to walk out unless Cab was given dressing rooms equal to his. He also insisted that Cab get star billing and be treated equal to him.
