I finally caught it yesterday! I've been wanting to catch it since I lost a fishing tourney in ACWW to Wolfgang who had caught it about 5 minutes before the tourney was going to end. I was seven and cried for like an hour because I had given a freaking ocean sunfish. You read right. SEVEN! I'm turning FIFTEEN in two weeks and now is when I finally almost catch it. Its in the museum now living happily. Wish I had this video 8 years ago.

One other way of scaring off fish is with the beans tool you get from Harvey in the Animal Crossing: Welcome Amiibo update. All you have to do is visit Harvey, choose all of of the options when talking to him, and keep visiting him until you see him throwing beans for birds to eat and talk to him again, where he will give you them. They can be used infinitely.

Thank you for this guide! Today i was able to catch my first coelacanth :D (And its true that you can differentiate the shadows. I learned that the sea bass shadow is round like a pear and that the coalacanths shadow looks more like a blue marlin than a sea bass)

I CAUGHT ONE WHILE I WAS WATCHING IT!! I wasn't sure if I was going after the right shadows, and I thought I was about to catch a tuna. The shadow is a bit longer and thinner, since it was a bit difficult to tell in the video. It is angular though.

I do that too! Listening for the catch sound is more reliable than seeing the bobber go down!

I caught a Coelacanth last night. I didn't use the save and continue trick, but I eventually came across one. Unlike a couple of people, I always catch at least two really rare bugs and or fish (I.e scorpion, tarantula, coelacanth, etc) and put one each in both my museum, and my house. Currently I only have a tarantula and a giant stag in my house. When August through September rolls around, I hope to catch a couple scorpions. Its been raining a lot in my town lately, so I hope another coelacanth won't be a problem.

I've used a trick catching the Coelalacanth following your advice. I mean when I've found it I use the 3 ticks trick hahahaha. So, I always press A when the fish is making a "tick" the third time. It is because probability, I have a 60% of succesfullness and I found it useful.

Finally started snowing (it only rained once since August), so I took time to go down to the beach and try to catch one. Two hours later it stopped snowing, and I caught two tunas, and too many sea bass to count. I really let my expectations get warped by the fact that you found one within five minutes.
