It’s also common to see the IR4 (electric) and the IC3 (diesel) running/coupled together as a single train. This is an unique feature. And of course, you can walk through both of them when they are couple together. A maximum of 5 units can be coupled together. This is the maximum amount that the train computer 'understands' . All IR4, IC3 and the little brother, IC2 (2 unit local train, diesel) were all designed and built in Randers, Denmark. The IC3 top speed is officially 180 km/h although, they have reached 220 km/h during testing back in the days.
@1cmman
@1cmman 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and I think that was done with the old V8 engines and not the newer, ligther and more powerful V6 turbos the IC3s have now so if the test was repeated now they should be able to do a little more since I belive power per trainset has now been increased with 200 hp as well as lower weight.

The EMU''s were originally built as a regional train (IR4 = InterRegio with 4 coaches, IC3 = InterCity with 3 coaches). The EMU's are currently used in long distance services, but still have the same regional configuration.

About the seats: The IR4 EMU was originally intended for short regional trains, thus the harder seats in 2nd class - which don't recline. They also squeezed more seats into some IR4 such that they aren't synchronized with the windows any more. Basically, IR4 2nd class seats are basic. IR4 1st class seats (and some quiet zones too) are identical to IC3 2nd class seats. IC3 first class seats are wider, but otherwise almost the same than 2nd class seats. I myself wouldn't pay extra for 1st class in Denmark.

Yeah DSB in recent years has put their 1st class priorities into the soft product (Lounge access, extra service, food and what not) rather than into its seats. Even on their new Talgo trains it seems like they're gonna use the same seats for standard class and first class

Fun fact. All but one (train 5096) of the 96 IC3 trains DSB have in service are adopted by a town/city and named after something/someone important from that town/city. 4 of them are adopted by cities/towns outside of Denmark, three in Germany and one in Sweden. Train 5058 is adopted by Flensburg, 5076 by Lübeck, 5083 by Hamburg and 5090 by Ystad. Before the renovations all trains featured art work, often made by local artists, and often the art was in relation to the person/thing the train was named after. Sadly DSB have decided to remove the art as it was too expensive to maintain. There's a plaque at each door with information about that specific train's history and it's name. Most are only in Danish but some also have one in English and German

Interesting video. Did you know that the IC3 type was built from 1989 (in service from 1990), and that very little has changed since then? There were a lot of jokes about the automatic doors in the beginning, but in the 30+ years of service, it has grown on us, and it just keeps working. And still has that feel of being ahead of its time. Alas the factory that built them no longer exists. The Italian produced IC4 successor to IC3 was extremely delayed, and most units were just standing still in Aarhus for years while waiting for fixes and acceptance.

The cars look a lot like Daimler's Flexliner cars we rode in 1996. They were not electric but direct drive diesel through an automatic transmission. We got to see them here on the west coast and rode them on a demo from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo, then on to Paso Robles. The equipment had no trouble climbing the grade and it was very nice but did sound like a bus because the engines were underneath the cars. Great for commuter equipment, we could see that some day.

Have just found this channel...I love your reviews.. hopefully you will also visit Asia in the future because we have so many good trains and splendid scenery.. Btw I have travelled the same route on DSB, only all the way to Hamburg in 2nd class in summer of 2019, which included the need to transfer in Fredericia as well. The seat formation was a bit odd, like commuter train or subway seats, with seat rows along the train wall. And the electric socket was way too high up the wall, which left my phone hanging while it was charged. Too bad you did not visit the 2nd "commuter" class. Looking forward to your next trip. Stay safe and healthy!

I suppose there were more than just one IR4 in the consist, and if you have walked further, you would have seen a curious thing. In these "Gumminase" trains the whole driver's cab could be pulled inside the train, making a walking connection betwen the coupled units.

One of the IC3's was also detached in Fredericia and continued to "Thisted". Another IC3 was detached in Aarhus where the train changes direction, and the last IC3 drove all the way to Aalborg.

Trust me, it's really not. And the infrastructure manager, Banedanmark is even worse. It's only in the very recent times that DSB has managed to turn around to become slightly better, experimenting with a new onboard food/coffee service on select services just before COVID-19 (and as of now returning in a little over a week), introducing a new station cafe/communal meetup concept on stations not large enough to warrant a full kiosk (based on the "Stations Huiskamer" by NS of the Netherlands), and the introduction of the Orange Fri ticket, which works like a cheaper, slightly flexible off peak ticket. As long as they continue in this direction and Banedanmark keeps to their plans with the upgrading and repair works then we should finally be able to have trains and railways we can be proud of again soon.

I used to live and work in Copenhagen, or commute over the Öresund bridge from Malmö to Copenhagen. This video was both full of memories and trauma lol I don’t know how many times I’ve had to wait for late trains at Copenhagen central station, or dash through as speedy Gonzales like as I could muster to try to catch my connection. And yes, Copenhagen central station is a very busy station, both a lot of intercity and international trains, and commuters who are working in the city center or the suburbs. I worked in a suburb and had to transfer to S-tog at Copenhagen central station. As for the spray paint vandalism, it’s not a train in Denmark if it doesn’t have graffiti in it or on it, or both 😂 And also, at least one toilet on the train has to be out of commission (preferably with leaks out into the corridors) for a complete experience 😂

Danish trains have always been extremely comfortable. I remember our old locomotive-hauled InterCity stock, which had 1st class style seats in the 2nd class compartments. We also had a collection of about 15 coaches that were built as 1st class coaches during the 50´s. DSB then refurbished them during the 80's, giving them airline-style seats. During the same period we also had the experimental IC5 train that came with an onboard conference room, and we had the danish version of the german TEE dmu. Overall we danes have always been spoiled when it comes to trains. =) When we got the german doubledecker coaches and Desiro sets, DSB actually had to add extra padding to the seats because the standard seats used on 2nd class in german trains was too uncomfortable for the danish commuters.

@drdewott9154
@drdewott9154 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mean that's not even mentioning that the IC4 is absolute trash when it comes to reliability. And yeah, it's sad what happened to Scandia. Got absorbed into Adtranz and then after that into Bombardier, and looking at it, then Bombardier ain't doing so good right now, with EMUs that that aren't as reliable as their competitors and passing deadlines for delivery. But we'll see what the future holds for DSB. We should soon hear the results of the tender for new coaches for the Hamburg trains, and if everything sticks to schedule (which I doubt it will but whatever) then this summer we should hear what the new domestic trains are gonna be. The contestants as of now seem to be the Alstom Coradia Stream (Like the ICNG at NS), The Stadler FLIRT/KISS (Like the Nordbahn, and Mälartåg trains), and the Bombardier Talent (See ÖBB Cityjet), based on the requirements and preferences of DSB with this tender, seeking a fast 200km/h train suitable for both intercity and regional services.

What's really disappointing about DSB 1' is that it has 2+2 seating. As far as I'm concerned, being able to sit alone is the main benefit of the first class. If I'm gonna end up packed with other people, I might as well be in the second class and save some money :/

It seems you didn't 'see the problems for the praise': Also the Fredericia - Flensburg section is electrified, so why don't they use an eletric train there too? Because DSB has so far not managed to get enough dual-mode trains that can also run on the very last bit of the line, ie from the border to Flensburg, given that Germany uses a lower voltage than Denmark. But that should be solved in a few more years .)

I mean it's their 1998 livery design. Since then they tried to replace the green door stripes with red ones but decided to drop that. It's the plan that all the coaches will be repainted in a new livery of Red, Black window stripe and grey doors. But due to limited funds, the repainting and interior refurbishment of these coaches have been postponed. So far only 1 IC3 set that was repaired following an accident and a few of Copenhagen's S train (Basically DSB's version of RER) units have been repainted in the new style.

I have traveled in 2nd class when I have traveled in trains in Denmark, Germany and Italy. The seats are comfortable in 2nd class in all countries and you have the same service. The difference is that the seats in 1st class are bigger seats with more space. If you travel again you could try 2nd class in the train, because there is not much difference between 1st and 2nd class in European trains.

The first batch from 2002 was leased from Porterbrook and the second batch from 2009 was leased from Railpool. DSB bought the second batch from Railpool in 2012 and the first batch from Porterbrook in 2014.

Yeah. The reason they did it was that at the turn of the millennium it was the plan that when the IC4's would enter service, they would displace the IC3's from Intercity routes onto regional services where they would replace the aging 1970's push pull trains. But then The IC4's entry into service got delayed so these coaches were leased as a stop gab. Then when the IC4's finally entered service they were quite unreliable, so DSB leased more as their 1970's coaches couldn't hold on for longer. And when the IC4's turned out to just be incredibly poorly designed they purchased all their leased wagons as they realized it would no longer be just a stop gab.

Class MF (IR 4) version is not correct. The diesel variant of the flexliner (designed for intercity travel) is called MF, while the electric "sister" is called ER (designed for regional travel - later converted to fit intercity travel). The marketing name of MF is IC3 (Intercity train with 3 wagons) while the markerting name of ER is IR4 (Inter-regional train with 4 wagons).
