Да, Д1 был рабочей лошадкой на многих не электрифицированных ветках железных дорог Советского Союза. Очень удачная конструкция поезда, плавный ход. Единственное неудобство - это деревянные лавки-сидения, особенно на дальних поездках. Но для советского человека это было привычно и нормально. Главное - романтика железнодорожных путешествий. Хорошо, что где-то этим поездам дали вторую жизнь, а ещё более примечательно, что и старые Д1 поддерживаются в рабочем состоянии и перевозят пассажиров.

Moldova facts: Like the Romanian coat of arms, the Moldovan arms, adopted in 1990, features a dark golden eagle holding an Orthodox Christian cross in its beak. Historically, Iași was once part of Moldavia, as it was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia from 1564 to 1859, and after that it was capital of the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia from 1859 to 1862, and briefly the capital of Romania from 1916 to 1918. As you mentioned, the D1s were originally built in Hungary, by Ganz-MAVAG or Ganz Works. They were pioneers in their craft, not just in building rolling stock but revolutionized the milling industry! Ganz Works is known for helping create the world's first electrified main line in Italy! They commissioned Kálmán Kandó to develop induction motors and synchronous motors. In 1894, Kandó developed high-voltage three-phase AC motors and generators for electric locomotives. The first-ever electric rail vehicle manufactured by Ganz Works was a 6 HP pit locomotive with direct current traction system. They won the tender for electrification of the Valtellina Railway in Italy in 1897. Under the plans from Kálmán Kandó, three phase electric power at 3 kV and 15 Hz was fed through two upper wires and the rails. The electricity was produced in a dedicated power station and the system operated for thirty years from 1902. Italian railways were the first in the world to introduce electric traction for the entire length of a main line rather than just a short stretch, and the 106 km Valtellina line was opened in September 1902.

When I saw the thumbnail of your video, I was thinking that those trains would be very nice to have for a potential line near where I live. But I was awestruck when I found out that they were from the 60's but they were refurbished down to the last bolt. Makes you think about the wonders one could pull off our venerable Fiat Materfer 7131 DMUs here in Argentina

@@benbedothu Yes, they were built in the same factory as the D1s. However, the model name was C4 and they were named according to the cities they would serve and were specifically tailored according to city. "Catamarca" ones were made for metric gauge and had tourist and first class accommodations. But "Bariloche" ones were luxuriously appointed, so the cheapest class available was first class and they featured sleeping compartments, they were also made to use Indian gauge. Rosario ones never made it to Argentina as they were sent to the USSR in concept of war reparations, but they were made for medium distance services and thus, they had tourist class only. Ganz kept building DMUs for Argentina well into the 60s

I've just came back from Moldova, and I was surprised... they haul this D1M with an ChME3 from Chisinau to Ungheni, there the loco is being uncoupled and the D1M powerd on.. and driving on its last legs till Iasi. The reason i've heard is because of failure in the units, only 1 runs (barely) therefor hault with a loco for the most of his journey. I hope te'll fix the D1M's soon, great sets and perfect for the job in Moldova.

I had the same happening on an original D1 in Ukraine, one of the engines failed and it hadn't the power to get even moving on the steep gradients of the Carpathian mountains. A ChME3 came to the rescue.

In Chile, EFE also rebuilt some old trains for its flagship service. Some 70's-era UT440 EMU's brought from Renfe were completely rebuilt for "Terrasur" Intercity service - these were the fastest trains of South America (160 km/h) until the arrival of new CRRC EMU's in 2023.

Funnily enough, the 2nd class seats can also be found on an european train, namely in Italy on taf EMU and PR and 2 floors casaralta coaches. Those coaches are getting scrapped (and for a good reason) and TAF are getting revamped, so those seats are mercifully gonna be gone soon. I honestly can't think of a train seat that is less confy than that, I would rather take 3rd class on this train than those aweful 2 class seats

The solution here might be modernizing the Route to ÖBB Bahnstrecke Wien Hbf Wiener Neustadt section or Westbahn Sankt Pölten Wien Hbf conventional speed section not the high-speed line. That way the travel time between the two cities is reduced thanks to the 160 kmh 100 mph Max speed. The final section of the route would have belonged to the Austrian Railway successor KkStb since it went to Bukowina an Austrian crownland 100 years ago

Thanks! Was very interesting to see the railroad situation in this area. Moldova is a very poor country, but it tryes to save the railroad commuter connections at least a little. I remember, how I was dreaming to visit Chisinau once and now it's only the foggy plance due to the war and international isolation( And about the cars in the long distance trains. They have only similar external design and interior, technically they are very different. In Ukrainian train use the new cars of Krukov's car manufactury. In Moldovian train to Bucharest use the old soviet cars, which were manufactured in DDR more then 30 years ago.

Luckily here in Italy they've mostly disappeared or have been improved: they used to be terrible when fitted with the original asymmetrical headrest, which is similar but not identical to the one shown in this video. It seemed like it was designed to be annoying on purpose, I wonder who ever thought it was a good idea.

The UZ cars are actually substantially more modern than the Moldovan ones - all of them are either modernized on newly built in the past 15 years. The white-gold-blue ones and the dark blue ones are air-conditioned, and I think some of the older light blue ones as well!

In Poland, there's another heavily modernised train, the 14WE, which is a heavily modernised train, which was commonly nicknamed "Papal Train" due to it's route running between Kraków and Wadowice, the cities where John Paul II lived. And a fun fact is that these trains are, in fact, it isn't modernised, but rebuilt from scrapped EN57 trainsets, reusing bogies, equipments and some installations from them. Today, these trains are operated by SKM Warszawa, Koleje Śląskie and PolRegio, in a form of nine sets, four of which are now leased by Industrial Division. These trains have been successful since then, with their innovation results of them being 19WE, also produced for SKM, and Newag Impuls, which're in production since 2012.

I am a great fan of the orignal D1 trains. In fact, when I first saw videos about them a few years ago, I could not believe how stylish they were! I'm a bit disappointed they are being modernised. They really have been transformed.

In Russia there were similar EMUs that were completely rebuilt with a modern design based on old ER2 units. it’s name is EM4 and they were only used in Moscow suburban routes They were decommissioned in 2020 but you can still look it up on YT. a great redesign as well
