It's incredible to me that the same company that built the ETR 500 and ETR 1000 also built some of the worst trains and trams of the last 30 years.

Etr 1000 has been projected by Bombardier. Ansaldo Ferroviaria just built it in its factory. But, since Ansaldo had huge financial troubles, the factory has been sold to Hitachi and now it's working great. Etr 500 has been manufactured by the consortium TREVI, (Ansaldo, Breda, Fiat Ferroviaria, ABB Tecnomasio, Firema Trasporti). Etr 500 is also a 33 year old train. Ansaldo was very different at that time. Not to mention in the 30s when they projected and built the etr 200 (one of the fastest and most modern train on earth at that time), or in the 50s with Settebello and Arlecchino trainsets.

@@fecciargento5102 Oh yes, ETR 200 was way ahead of the time: it already had bogies between the cars and its design still makes it one of the sexiest looking trains of all times. I hope any of them is preserved. Stiil remember the times when they were in regular service as "treni rapidi" which I couldn't afford at the time.

As long as these trains don't cause service disruptions, I think Trenitalia made a good choice in getting its hands on these older but cheaper trains. At the end, seeing the amount of people they move it's simply more revenues for the company. I'm sure when Trenitalia will decide to change these trains for newer Frecciargento ones, they'll buy a newly made train for the whole service.

It never was crappy, just not a high speed train. It never was intended to be, so it was forced to be something it was not due to the Dutch being ultra cheap and not listening to people telling them to go with tried and true designs. Like Siemens designs or Alstom. Heck you don't even need a ICE clone, even their non highspeed designs can reach 200+ km/h, more than plenty of what was needed for this line. But the Dutch wanted a High speed line, for pennies on the dollar. Rather than a normal train that goes 200km/h for the same price or a high speed one for more.

Nothing. Because this trains lost the license for running on the tracks. They Tried to fix it in the Nederlands but the trains were too bad to fix. The trains were send back to italy and they hoped to get back as much money as possible. Now there are very old and slower trains running on the high speed line for since the fyra stopped. They also have many problems but at least they dont fall apart on their own.

NS has bought new Alstom Corradia Stream (Intercity Nieuwe Generatie) trains which will run the former Fyra route. They only run 200 km/h compared to the 250 km/h Fyra, but hopefully they will actually be reliable.
@Skinksalladen
@Skinksalladen 2 жыл бұрын
@@OntarioTrafficMan It's really unfortunate since the HSL allows for trains to run at 300km/h nearly all the way Schiphol - Antwerp. The Thalys (with a 300km/h top speed) saves about 35 minutes compared to the current IC Direct (top speed 160km/h) on most scheduled departures. If all the trains had a higher top speed that would probably allow for better scheduling and even faster services, especially for Amsterdam-Rotterdam.

In the Trenitalia's fleet this is probably the poorest high speed train in terms of quality. But of course this is also due to the really high quality of the other trains, especially the Frecciarossa. Quite loud ambients and some sensors "not smart" are for sure there and this is bad. Anyway, to be honest I wouldn't criticize so much the lack of comfort (very similar to a lot of similar high speed trains in Europe) and the plugs (I think you were really just unlucky, every seat has a usb port and a plug that has always worked when I travelled on this train). For the guys writing don't buy trains from Italy I just respond that one of the most beautiful train of the world, the Frecciarossa 1000, is entirely constructed in Italy and some Frecciargento and Italo's trains as well. So don't be prejudicial!
@00hl4l4
@00hl4l4 2 жыл бұрын
I think the issue is with the AnsaldoBreda trains that weren't designed or made in collaboration with another train manufacturer. Both generations of the ETR 500 were built by consortiums of multiple companies including AnsaldoBreda. The Frecciarossa 1000 was developed with input from Bombardier. The various trains including the Fyra that were built by AnsaldoBreda with small amounts of design input from companies with less experience in train design were the ones plagued by issues. The problem isn't with Italian trains but with AnsaldoBreda trains, but because AnsaldoBreda trains were the only trains exported out of Italy people judged them as Italian trains. Hitachi took over AnsaldoBreda's operations in Italy and the trains they make seem to be fine showing that it was an AnsaldoBreda issue not an issue with how Italian people were working.

The FYRA wasn't the only crappy train that AnsaldoBreda managed to produce, though. The Danish IC4 trains and the order for trams in Gothenburg also turned out disastrous. They had a long history of making big promises to win the contracts, and then utterly failing to deliver on those promises. They also produced some trams for Boston that had a lot of problems, IIRC. Then, AnsaldoBreda was bought out by the Japanese company Hitachi, and became Hitachi Rail Italy. Since then, they've slowly been improving, but some of HRI's trains still have a lot of problems! The new "Azuma" intercity trains for the UK are not unreliable, but they're known for being noisy and flimsy. However, they've been getting better over the years. The ETR 1000 was built as joint venture between the Canadian company Bombardier (which has since been bought out by Alstom) and Hitachi Rail Italy. So even though it was built in Italy, it wasn't a purely Italian project. I am certain that Italian trains will keep on getting better and better - but there's a good reason why people are still distrustful of them, and that reason is AnsaldoBreda.

@@wasmic5z when the Frecciarossa 1000 was designed and the first 50 units were built, Hitachi Rail Italy wasn't a thing. Also basically 90% of the italian rolling stock was mostly made by Breda at Pistoia, and all those trains worked fine
@00hl4l4
@00hl4l4 2 жыл бұрын
@@wasmic5z @wasmic5z the Azuma trains (class 800) were built in Newton Aycliffe with bodywork made in Japan, there was no involvement of Hitachi Italy. The class 802 (known as Nova 1, Paragon, or IET depending on operator) were built at Pistoia in Italy after Hitachi took over AnsaldoBreda as Newton Aycliffe was at capacity. The initial Azuma/class 800 trains (built from 2014 onwards) that had some issues were all made in the UK (with bodywork shipped from Japan), construction on the 802's (made in Italy) began in 2017 so I don't think this is a fair criticism of Italian train manufacturing.

Another debacle of the Dutch railways, after the fyra, after the intercity alstom, just in these days the railways of the Netherlands, NS, have released a very harsh statement against Infraspeed, the company that built and must maintain the infrastructure of the HS line. The reason is easy to say, the high-speed line has "dramatic" speed limits because it has a lot of problems. The company writes: "NS considers it unacceptable that the operator Infraspeed must again impose a speed reduction on the high-speed line (HSL). The railway line, designed for a maximum speed of 300 kilometers per hour, in several places has maximum speeds as low as 120 kilometers per hour. From Wednesday the speed will be further reduced to 80 kilometers per hour in five places due to construction cracks discovered in 2022. Obviously in this case too it is Ansaldo Breda's fault! A railway company run by incompetents!

I did the Milan to Venice journey in the summer of 2017 on the Frecciarossa 1000. It was a great journey. I do not fancy the 180 miles (280km) journey aboard an old Fyra train - i knew trenitalia were bringing them into service after years out of service - that loud electrical noise in the video is awful - they need back in the workshop for that to get fixed. The hard seats are like the blue hard faux leather seats in FS regional train carriages which i travelled on my return journey from Venice to Milan - changing at Verona - from an FS double deck regional on to a Trenord train.

I arrived in Europe (in Brussels) on January 18, 2013 and I still remember there was a LOT being said about this train. I'm so glad I paid the extra $$$ for Thalys to go to Amsterdam that day. That said, Thalys was also a disaster when I took it to Paris from Amsterdam a few days later due to minor winter weather and a train that didn't show up. It was, however, memorable because I got to travel in the small "meeting room" compartment at the very back of the train - sitting next to none other than Judith Sargentini - an EU MP. A Karen who was assigned to my seat tried to make me move, but because seat reservations were suspended as a result of the issues, she was told to sit elsewhere. It was also bad because of a 160 km/speed restriction, which meant it took around 6 hours to make the trip.

How would you compare these with the ETR610 or an ETR4XX (as that is probably the direct comparator)? The ETR610 is amazing on the outside, but (like you), I found the ride problematic, and the interior not comfortable (for instance, there was a bin where I wanted to put my knee). Although the seats in the UK Pendolino are horrible, the ride has been much better than the ETR610, so I was left quite disappointed, as I had been really looking forward to the ETR610. I haven't been on an ETR4XX. Apart from the noise, the ETR700 looks like a really nice environment, and it seems alot smoother than the Pendolino. And to the V250 haters- it got to its end destination without falling apart or catching fire- what more could you ask?!!! I think it will be interesting to see how much life Trenitalia gets out of them. Amazing when you realise they first started building these trains in 2004, so some are over 15 years old, but have only just started being used in regular service!

@AndreiTupolev 2 жыл бұрын
AnsaldoBreda was taken over by Hitachi and some of the IETs for the UK were built there. There still seem to be the same issues with build quality, though hard seats 💺 seem to be universal these days. Interior noise levels didn't seem too bad apart from the hum from the transformer (which would presumably only affect the pantograph coach), though, and ride quality seemed to be reasonably good

Omg. I think being locked in the toilet for 20 minutes and having to break your way out would absolutely make this train an epic fail. Even arriving in Venice wouldn’t make up for it. I assume it’s cheaper to buy old equipment and “refurbish” than buy new. And it looks like there were plenty of customers but I wonder how many were repeats.

well... probably most of them, you have 3 ways of doing this trip you either use the highspeed service to bologna but doing so takes more than 3 hours and is double the price, use the regional service that requires a change but still takes more than 3 hours of travel time but in a straight line... or you use this highspeed train with a travel time of 2 hours and 30 minutes at the same price of the regional service... it's basically a no brainer, things will probably change once the high speed high capacity railway line currently under construction will be finished, but as it stands it's a reasonable service.

Great video once again!! Bar/restaurant cars still closed? Last summer, besides Italy, I went to Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France on my 30 day first class Eurail pass. Italy was the only country that didn't have bar/restaurant cars open. I know it's still Covid concerns, any one have any idea when they will reopen since all the other countries did months ago. im italian and I think that the italians are the best designer and mechanical in all europe. if we dont' have the problem like corrumption,problem in the factory and no money I think that we will the best in all europe with our engineers; the other countries go forward because we sell to them our ideas and our skills. another example is alfa: if alfa didn't have economically problem in the 70s probably they would sell a lot of car now; alfa in the 70s have the best mechianical technique in the world but fiat ruined all.

The sensors of the automatic doors are all subject to breakage sooner or later, for this reason on almost all trains in Italy, the doors between the carriages all have the opening and closing buttons. The only remaining problems on this train are two: one the furnitures. I admit that the chairs are not exactly comfy. And two: the biggest problems: the low number of toilets!!!! Imagine this: a man suddendly has an urgency...then he need to run between carriages. And pray all the Saints in Heaven that: 1) the bathroom is not broken, 2) the bathroom is free :DDDDDDD Really a bad bad bad choice here, especially for a long travel between two cities.
@BubblesBub434
@BubblesBub434 2 жыл бұрын
the Dutch railways are notoriously shit (no pun intended) at toilets in trains. Many of their 'koploper' long distance intercity sets only have 1 (!) toilet per EMU, or at most two. VIRM sets have 1 toilet every other or even every third carriage, and they use double-deck cars. Then there's 'Sprinter' commuter services that have no toilets at all. BlauwNet(Keolis) rides regional services between two major cities with no long-distance-train alternative (Zwolle, Enschede) where the journey takes over an hour, and they use FLIRT's that have 1 toilet that is practically always broken down to the point that they instructed their personnel to allow people in the conductor's compartment to take a leak if necessary. It's laughable. Point being, I bet the Dutch Railways just asked the FYRA designers to not put many toilets in, Dutch train travellers are primed to expect nothing, not drink anything before and during a long train journey already so they could just get away with this as well.

In the original project, this train was supposed to cover the Brussels-Amsterdam section in about an hour and a half, almost as if it were a fast metro. The dutch specifications therefore envisaged few toilets in favor of more places. Trenitalia has not been able to change this aspect, although I think it has some ideas about it. However, on the Milan-Venice section, the train is adequate, because it is a two-hour journey, which would be the work for which it was designed
