A lot of people ask can you use a spool on the street? My 1968 Dodge Dart has a Dana 60 rear end that has a spool and 4:30 gears in it. I have to change the oil so I took the opportunity to talk about my experience with use of a spool on the street.

Hello from Indiana. Back in the late 80's I had a 70 Duster 340 auto and I ran 5:12 gears on a spool , on the street. Lots of fun , stop light to stop light. The main drag was 4 lane and about 3 miles long.

I drove a 73 Camaro with a 10 bolt and a mini spool on the street as my daily for 3 years with no problems and a 85 Camaro with a 9 inch and a full spool with no problem. Only way to go in my opinion. My 65 El Camino will have one soon.

Hello Joe! Ahhh the spool. Here is my take and experience. 67 Mustang Gt S-code original 390 4 speed car. Then.... Built 460 big block Ford with all the good parts internal and external, C-6 reverse valve body. Ford 9" nodular 4:11 gears and full racing spool, 4 link. No power steering, air or power brakes, disc front/drum. 190 skinny Goodyears front 320 60r x15 M/T rear. Problem one: very very hard to steer, the 460 weight does not help. A simple turn or backing out of the driveway was a chore as a simple right or left turn was. Tires chirping, skipping. Pulled the Center section and swapped out the spool for a Yukon Trac-Lok differential, rebuilt rear brakes, hoses and lines while the axles were out. Is now quite streetable, No longer a race car, so I don't need the spool. Want to drop in a 351 Alum Z block and take it to 427 stroker and back to a 4 speed. Did you run a mini spool Joe or a full spool? Thanks for sharing, Cheers from Motown. Let me know if you ever need a parachute, have a nice Deist for you if you get her that fast. :)

Mate I had a spool in another diff for 15yrs, built my Dana60 and put an Eaton true-trac and it was the best thing I ever did. Drives like a new car, no “pushing” on corners or uneven surfaces, and acts like a spool as soon as you hit the loud pedal. Spool is so 80’s,there is just no need anymore.

I use a Detroit locker they lock in a straight line but allow for cornering I like them better then a spool I have used them and if you have a 100% strip car then they are great but if you run a street strip car Detroit Lockers in my opinion is the best.

I’ve always found that the taller the tyre the better with a spool. Probably more of the bind taken up by the sidewall. But totally agree spool is 100% street worthy.

I run a 8.75" in my 1970 Dodge Dart. I have a Shure Grip differential that is set up extremely stiff, darn near a spool in handling. You hear some tire squeal in tight slow corners. The biggest thing is just be careful on wet pavement.

The idea that tires make the difference is an interesting one. I would think the spool gets old if you daily drive it, but on a showcar like this I totally get the benefit of track use.

medium speed sweeping turn, a little moisture on the road, wide tires without much grooving, back end passes the front and and you leave the road going backwards.

Sure you can run a spool on the street, as a daily driver too. I even ran a quick change for a couple of weeks on my '64 Barracuda-out of necessity. I seemed to make far more right hand turns then left, I did notice some wear/chunking on the outer tread near the sidewall on those Mohawk Super Mag 50's passenger side tire.

A mini spool is also a good cheap option that's easier to install for those who are making 300whp range. Just buy a solid one like the RTS FORGED MINI SPOOL they are about 200.00 but shouldn't fragment like the cheap cast ones that goes for 20 to 90 bucks

Oh no not a Mechanical Roller Camshaft, Q:How often have you had to reset the Valves?. and for a Real Question, if going to a spool why not just use 8 and 3/4"? rear.. Or if you have a Dana why not just a standard limited slip?? Or? does this mean More Horsepower for the future and you want to be ready?

I dont think it's so much "can" but "should" you use a spool on the street. You can use anything on the street. It just depends how much maintenance you want to do, aggravation you want to put up with, and how you're going to use the car. As for a spool, I would never recommend one in a daily driver. I dont beleive the guys who say they use them in their daily, because they would have a very difficult time in the rain and snow. Out for a cruise on a nice day? Sure. But I would never run one (mini-spool can do this) with C-clip axles.

@@SimpsonsSpeedShop yeah my rear lockers stuck on. I lost a good 1/16th of tread just getting home from a trail. Aprox 2 weeks of low use city driving so I can imagine how fast it would chew them up.
