"On the face of it " is a beautiful lesson which keeps us engaged in a philosophical conversation between two physically impaired persons with their starkly contrasting views about life. It sometimes makes us question our own struggles and the aftermath of it. This chapter explores the turbulent mind of a young teenager, Derek who is new to "facing" setbacks with his half burnt face. Being sick of getting hurled with sympathetic remarks or sometimes, even snide and repulsive looks from people, Derek slips into a cocoon of social isolation. This develops a pessimistic perspective in him about the world. Through his cynical eyes, he distrusts everyone, and constantly torments himself with self loathe. On the contrary , Mr. Lamb, an old man with a tin leg, has a refreshing and uplifting perception. His optimism and accepting attitude attracts Derek. He believes that disability should not be an identity mark, but a driving force to push one's limits. He himself serves as an epitome of a self sufficient person who has made his tin leg, just an inconspicuous chapter of his life .His "peculiar" yet empathetic words, ignites hope in Derek and motivates him to quest for the inner strength in him. Although, Mr. Lamb leaves for heavenly abode, his words completely revolutionise Derek's attitude and plants self- confidence in him.
