The reason why Jim's meters aren't going down is because of the way he died. If a sim dies to the Mother Plant and is brought back as a ghost, their hunger, hygiene, and stuff are frozen. Also, the book of life has to be used BEFORE a sim dies to link them to it so they can be resurrected. Not after. Trust me, I made the exact same error in thought.

Jim had always thought he had no fear of death. After all, he had cheated it countless times and had *married* the personification of that most final fate. The methods he had used and the feats he had accomplished would make a lesser man's head spin at his seemingly never-ending game of chess with the reaper. But as he felt the jaws of the Mother Plant press into him, his seemingly indestructible flesh finally giving way, Jim had to admit... He was scared. This seemed different somehow, more definite than those countless times death had scratched its icy fingers down his back. The end came quicker than Jim expected, as it was with a sudden snapping and a chill in his mid-section that his vision went totally dark. Jim hadn't expected a light; even he had to admit his sins were too great for any hope of paradise beyond the veil. Rather than a realm of fire and brimstone though, Jim found himself in a void of darkness, only the distant howl of wind speaking of some reality to the vision. From that darkness, a figure appeared, floating into being. "Grim?" Jim had questioned, immediately recognising the visage of a faceless being garbed in dark robes wielding a scythe. The response was a simple slow shake of the head from the being. Jim nodded to himself. Ever since marrying the former Grim Reaper, Jim hadn't seen him get up to any reaping anymore. It made sense a new one would take his place. Or perhaps this was the true reaper? Jim rubbed at his brow as the revelation that his death truly was definite if the claimer of souls was present hit him. "I guess this is it, then," the Dear Leader mumbled, fighting a choke at the back of his throat. "I guess it was always coming." Reluctantly, Jim started forward, his intention to walk with the reaper to whatever fate awaited him, but was startled to stillness when the reaper slammed the bottom of the scythe's handle against the 'ground' of the void. Another slow shake of the head was the only explanation, but Jim quickly understood its meaning. "You mean..." The deceptively old man started, hope creeping into his voice as he regarded the reaper. "This isn't it? I... I get to go back?" The reaper was silent for what felt an eternity, but the subtle wobble of his head from side to side displayed an attempt at finding the right way to explain the situation. Finally, the reaper lifted his free hand and, in a startling mortal fashion, wobbled it from side to side. Jim frowned. "What do you mean?" But he soon understood. No Sim could truly come back from death, though there were rumours and legends. Returning as a ghost seemed to be what the reaper was getting at, but Jim knew the hang ups to that all too well. "But a spirit needs to be summoned," Jim said, anger at the reaper for getting his hopes up making his voice raise in volume. "And I died in the bowels of some abandoned lab to a... A plant." Jim felt shame and embarrassment. That was new. "No one's coming back for me." Then, as if the universe had been waiting for that specific moment, a bright light burst into existence behind Jim. Startled, he turned to regard it. Though he could see nothing but the light's blinding splendour, somehow he knew what it meant. Home... Jim turned back to the reaper, the beginning of some speech working at his lips, but the claimer of souls beat him to the punch. "Jim Pickens..." The robed one said in a voice which seemed to shake the void itself. "Know this. You are known in the afterlives, in both, what mortals call, heaven and hell. Your deeds and feats have been extensively documented and their verdict unto you, in the event of your death..." The reaper paused, his face stil a featureless mass of black, but Jim knew that a smirk had formed somewhere within the shadow. "...is that you are to not be allowed within a hundred paces of either. We simply cannot handle you, Mr. Pickens." The reaper then threw out his free hand, gesturing to the light. "Now feck off back to the living world." Jim grinned and turned his back to the reaper. He didn't need to move himself, as the light seemed to tug him towards it, faster and faster, until Jim felt like his skin would peel back from the wind resistance. But suddenly, it all stopped and Jim felt himself floating again. This time though, it was in a dimly lit chamber in some abandoned lab, with a grunting and huffing Mother Plant looming above him. Jim looked about and his sight landed on none other than Shrek, garbed in a hazmat suit. The grin grew. "How's it going, Shrek? Did ya miss me?"

I remember looking this up because I wanted to resurrect one of my sims and there were 2 ways to resurrect back in that day. One was through writing and aspiration but you needed to do that before the sim you don't want to die dies because you need to write down their life story or something. The other one was just some sort of cake that was hard to create (really rare/expensive ingredients and high cooking skill) but when a ghost ate it the ghost immediatelly became alive again. The one with the book is easier done but needed to be prepared in advance. The one with the dessert was a fuckton harder but worked with ghosts after the sim already died.
