Its more akin to Monte Carlo simulations (which can do network simulations). The idea is to represent possible situations to record and estimate probabilities. In this case, the "control" variables are meant to show how variants in an infection rate can translate to real world consequences

If you were to add additional logic to the individuals, you could create social networks based on home/work/shopping behaviors
