Ok so I followed your advise from another video in regards to scenery.ini order, I then removed all previous Orthoxp files I had previously used. I then followed this video verbatim and paused to ensure I was doing EVERYTHING as you did up to and including the Leipzig Germany area as you did. I made sure and counted every tile you used from ZL16-ZL18 to ensure I had it exactly as you did, I am also using the same programs and all the same scenery's as you do. I made sure my load order was correct, however after loading into X-Plane and getting into the airplane it appeared as if I were in a large valley or hole where the airport was, the roads appeared to run off a cliff and house were situated as if the were on the wall of the cliff.. the outskirts over on the actual flat area of land looked fine, the only exception was the immediate area surrounding the airport which was in a very large valley or hole where the ZL-18 was at. What did I do wrong. I sincerely appreciate your help and the videos are great, I just don't understand how yours looked completely flat and mine looked.. well stupid lol

I will add looking back is I only found +50-010.dsf not +51-012 anywhere with in either x-plane itself or zzz.hd_global_scenery4, I am thinking that could be the problem. I am redoing everything again but downloading open scenery, ff_library as well as r2_library.. hopefully I can find that +51-012.dsf

A most excellent tutorial introduction into how to effectively use Ortho4XP for newbies like me. I found your explanations relatively easy to follow and clearly presented. I've always wondered if it was possible to get a greater resolution in specific small areas of an earth tile. Now I know how - thank you sir !
@oscarpilote80686 жыл бұрын
Thank you for making such tutorials, that one is mostly excellent. BUT one important remark though : Ortho4XP always builds its own mesh, it will never take HD Mesh Scenery v4 mesh. What you extract in your video is not HD Mesh Scenery v4 mesh, it is HD Mesh Scenery v4 elevation dataset, and the latter happens to be the same* (viewfinderpanorama 3") dataset as the default Ortho4XP elevation data source, so you could have skipped that part. You should think of elevation data as being the raw material from which the program is going to sculpt a mesh (using other information like runway locations etc), and that sculpting procedure (Assemble vector dara + Triangulate 3D mesh in the case of Ortho4XP) is actually most of the work and of the code. From HD Mesh Scenery v4 you will only ever use the Scenery part (i.e. overlays, and only if you wish to use that rather than e.g. X-Europe, which doesn't need any extraction and which I would personnally prefer for Europe]. I'd be glad if you could make that clear in some way in the video. You have a large audience and in such case all advises and statements are likely to propagate quickly (I actually landed here from a question on a different page). This is excellent for 99% of the video, but not that single part. Thank you again anyhow! Oscar * actually : the dataset included in HD Mesh Scenery v4 is viewfinderpanorama with already some (I'd say: too much) smoothing included. The current Ortho4XP airport code can deal with raw elevation data and does its own smoothing + auto-patching sculpting work, so not only you could but perhaps you should have skipped that extraction part.
@SimulationChannelDeluxe6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your clarification and compliments, Oscar :) And maybe I didn't use the most correct terms in the video, but I'm indeed intending to extract the elevation data from HD Mesh v4. One question: If Ortho4XP's and HD Mesh v4's elevation data are the same, how does the "curvature_tol" in the settings come into play? Does it still modifiy the mesh triangles like in 1.20b and doesn't that result in different elevation data than HD Mesh v4? With version 1.20b of your tool, I played around quite a bit with that setting and the resulting elevation data was different to the one of HD Mesh v4. Also I will pin your comment so everyone will see it on top.
@oscarpilote80686 жыл бұрын
Because (despite the name) the elevation data is NOT the elevation of the points of the mesh, it is only used as one (among other) ingredients to give altitudes to the actual mesh points. Sorry for following strange (yet pertinent!) comparison. Think of the mesh creation as the process of making a cake. The elevation data is one of the ingredients (say the flour), and the final mesh is the cake itself. What can influence the result in two cases where we would be using the same flour ? Certainly the cook (Ortho4XP in your case, or Meshtool for the HD Mesh Scenery v4 mesh), the recipe (curv_tol is typically part of the modificable parts of Ortho4XP recipe), and the time spent on details like decoration (levelling roads and sculpting nicely rounded airports could be understood as decoration - it has nothing to do with the raw elevation data which is usually a terrible bumpy land at small scale). v120b, v130 and Meshtool are all using the same flour as default (in all cases you can bring you own flour if you have some, and v130 can bring it for you in some cases). v130 has mostly the same default recipe as v120b, but it spends much more efforts on details and decoration.

Hi Oscar. So if I'm following correctly, we can skip the section where we use XPTools? Wait for the all-in-one button to do its thing, then extract the overlay?
@SimulationChannelDeluxe6 жыл бұрын
@@samuelh31992 You can absolutely do that, but I will stick to my XPTools method since I discovered some elevation inconsistencies with the mesh generated by Ortho4XP, e.g. a building at EDDF on a high plateau. To each their own :)

I too am German, Moin, moin. For the sake of other tubers I will continue in English. Thank you for clearing up a major point about 1.30. So many people produce tutorials purely for the sake of posting and hoping to farm clicks, click-baiting. This is wrong and should be banned but sadly it is not. You, Sir have provided good and factual information here. Mr Pilote would be proud. I have been using 1.20b for some time and I agree with you the learning curve is steep. Many do not understand how this program works and therefore have many problems. The first being that they have watched too many of these tutorials made by people who have no idea what they are talking about. Second is provider selection. BI works well, GO2, I can not get to work. I will follow you and hope to learn more. Thank you for your work.

Ops I almost forgot my question. When I use WED and remove the flatten command in WED in the custom scenery (EDDF by Areosoft), the runways are great but some terminals are floating for the most part. Any fix or solutions to this? It looks amazing but I think I am having a problem. The DSF files keep becoming "absent." I can build the tiles and they look great but I am missing autogen, I have the overlay folder in the orthoxp main folder, then a shortcut into my custom scenery. When I look in that folder, I don't see the proper dsf file. And yes, I did the "build overlay" function as you mention and yes, the "custom_overlay_src" points to X-plane11 global scenery folder. Its really wierd.

Did you create the overlays correctly? Do you have your sceneries ordered like I show in this video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXS1nJ6mmN-Sfpo
@IronCondorSimulations5 жыл бұрын
Excellent tutorial. Interesting reading the responses below. However, for newbies or a person like me who has used Ortho4XP for a while a bit confusing. #1) If we have ortho tiles built along with HD Mesh V4 installed what happens when the sim loads. Assuming the scenery.ini file is in the correct order. 2.) Should we leave the HD Mesh Scenery in XP and then use it for the overlays only? Sounds like the extra step is not required ( yes I understand there was some data issues you experienced at EDDF. 3.) Does the Ortho tile override the V4 mesh since Ortho4XP creates the mesh? Thanks for a great video.
@SimulationChannelDeluxe5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I will try to answer some of your questions. What I have read is that theoretically the HD Mesh v4 .dsf files can be deleted if you create an Ortho4XP tile for that area, since the mesh in the zOrtho4XP... folder supersedes any other mesh. That's also true if you are not using the HD Mesh v4 elevation data for the tile and use the elevation data that gets built by Ortho4XP. But I never delete the HD Mesh files, mostly as a backup I guess. When the sim loads, it will also read the HD Mesh in the zzz_hd_global_scenery4 folder before loading the photoreal scenery, therefore deleting the HD Mesh .dsf files could improve loading times. And yes I'm using the HD Mesh for the overlays and that step is 100% required, otherwise you won't have autogen on the photoscenery.
