From shmuplations interview with the composer: "-I would say your work on Sin and Punishment for the N64 was another high point in your career. Its fierce, dense fusion sound makes you totally forget the limitations of the N64 hardware. Yamanaka: That was PCM, accomplished thanks to a certain very talented programmer at Treasure. -Streamed PCM was rare on the N64. It sounds great, you really don’t think you’re listening to an N64 game. Does that mean, by the way, you’ve got the higher quality, uncompressed music data lying around somewhere? Yamanaka: Well, the only instrument I used to compose that music was the Roland SC-88 Pro. Since it turned out Treasure was able to do PCM streaming, it probably would have been nice if I’d worked in a more elaborate recording environment, but balancing a lot of sounds is actually very difficult for me. I use the expression “wall of sound” to refer to my own music style; I’m not very good at using space like some other composers are."

the way the synth riff that starts at 6:39 starts off so subtle and unassuming then becomes way more intricate and emphatic while still retaining the same kind of unassuming tone is killer

@@dedecoVGMDJ Toshiya Yamanaka was a programmer and composer alike, and knew how to write tunes that would sound good in PCM (pulse core modulation). In a 2013 interview, he mentioned that a developer at Treasure had already done the technical work for PCM streaming on the N64. On a closer listen, you might note that there isn't a lot of dynamic range within the audio-- by minimizing the amount of information being transmitted, you can fit sounds in pretty small spaces. Yamanaka's composition works really well with that, as he himself notes he usually produced a 'wall of sound'. As far as the technical specifics of other PCM games on N64, details are scarce, with most sources saying that 'few' games used PCM for music because of the fact that audio didn't have its own chip on the system and thus had to be weighed relative to other processes. PCM would become more common on the Sega Saturn / Sega Dreamcast and the Playstation. What's interesting is that PCM existed for a long time in consoles before this: the NES had one of its five channels dedicated to low-bit PCM. The advance of tech supposedly increased the feasibility of PCM, but developers tended to either underutilize their capacity in the interest of processing power. Some studios, (Treasure, Angel Studios, Edge of Reality, Rare) etc faced the problems of developing on the N64 bravely, competing with other consoles of the time. But it always was an uphill battle, so not all of the titles that use PCM do it as effectively as we hear it here. Treasure's commitment to making a short, sweet, replayable game probably gave them time to work on a good solution for audio, both in terms of processing and storage. Like the gameplay, characters, visuals, etc, it got polish
