● Description
Sir Clive Sinclair didn't only invent calculators and computers like the ZX Spectrum, he decided to make it his mission to create electric personal transportation and the Sinclair C5 was the machine to launch the fleet. Only it didn't quite work out like that. Today we get to meet the C5 and discuss it.

I appreciate this video showing the results of a full original restoration. There seems to be two types of C5 owner, 'the Purist' who wants theirs to be 'original', and 'The developer', who thinks he can improve the original concept, both seem to develop a passion for this fun machine. I do have two of these now non-original machines myself. My daily machine has been developed with a standard motor, 90A/H lithium batteries, a Pulse Width Controller, 3 speed hub (to aid pedal assistance,) and disc brakes both front and rear. For those that are interested, this can be found on You Tube as 'Sinclair C5, Hello I'm Clive' & 'Sinclair C5 with trailer'. This winter, with my second machine, I have abandoned the original rear wheel drive, and by using a 48v, gear-less, front hub, with telescopic suspension and a disc brake. Power comes from a front mounted 20A/H lithium battery pack. A 30A controller allows for PAS. (Now a legal requirement for new machines, but this was not required on the original C5.) Pedal assistance passes through a 8 speed Shimano hub, and the final drive now has a electro-magnetic clutch, which prevents the pedals from turning, when driving in reverse! The rolling chassis has now been completed, electrics are being wired-up, and the body is scheduled for mounting after Christmas. Hopefully a demonstration video will be ready in February. Both will be demonstrated here in The Netherlands at the 'Motor and Brommer' week-end, held in Leek during April, I shall be accompanied with 3 machines coming from Belgium, which are all rear wheel drive 'touring' conversions of 450-800w. There are Facebook forums for both 'C5 Owners' and 'C5 Developers' for those who wish to see what other owners are doing, plus offering help and parts . Have some fun.

He Neil, long time viewer fist time replyer. Ahh the ill fated c5 ,we that would be me and my family were approached by Sinclair the company and not clive in the 80s for a secrect survey. We would go to a secret location to test and pass on any comments that we liked or didn't like about the c5.if I remember we ended up testing it in a village hall. At the time we all thought this was a great idea as we lived in Milton Keynes and it had it's own cycle path called the red way. We was asked a multitude of questions and for our troubles we was given a complementary £10 each and sworn to never tell a soul .

That C5 electric bike looks amazing for it being something from the 80's, I mean it looks like something that can have been produced today in 2018. The man who invented this E-bike is a true visionary. I would love to have one of these, but I would have to upgrade it like they said in the video with some new lithium ion batteries, add a better motor and better tires. Honestly I would probably change the whole steering system to suit my needs. I guess this could be considered an early concept for today's electric velomobile.

I remember cycling round the island of Cumbrae in Scotland in 1998 and finding a C5 'graveyard' on the north west side. I think there was a place on the island you could hire them - this must have been where they were dumped when they broke. There was a good few in various states of disrepair - wish I had a camera phone back then... Maybe an opportunity for an "ET'esque" dig here in the UK?

I have one of these, it’s probably the most fun you can have on three wheels! Regarding upgrades, legally the 250W motor is the maximum you can fit to the vehicle - any greater and it has to be registered as a motor vehicle. A lithium battery however extends the range phenomenally and also provides better power on hills.
@timwatterson8060
@timwatterson8060 5 жыл бұрын
While the 250 w motor might be the legal limit you can go go to bldc motor for 0rpm starts and a better efficiency so longer range and usually more "available" power.

@Tore_Lund 5 жыл бұрын
@@timwatterson8060 Because every Bobby in town knows exactly how the C5 motor looks and will spot right away if you put the 250W sticker on a 5kW brush less monster! BTW the sticker says 12V 29A, That's 348W, so if you have some nice current capable Li-ion battery that don't sag, possibly at 16V (4S), you are around 500W with the original motor.

A pair of Nissan Leaf 7.2V double cell batteries = 64 AH at 14.4V = 0.92kWh as opposed to the original 36AH which for lead acid is 18AH real-life= 0.216kWh = 4.25times improvement = 85 UK miles range. Nothing radical, but still, with 48Nm it's quite a little powerhouse capable of supporting an adult paddling up to 45-50 km/h rather effortlessly. It's really telling it's a Sinclair product. If you compare the design philosophy to their computers, they have the same bare-bones rudimentary design, but they were early to market, in an effort to become the defacto front-runner. All of the elements are there, but nothing is best in class. It's definitely built to a budget. While I don't think pulse width modulation for speed control was practical in the 80s (I'm not even sure of the history of that technology), the lack of speed control, and poor torque of the motor is a problem. I can understand why they didn't do voltage control for throttle on the motor, given how poor the torque was to begin with. The absence of a reverse is understandable, but would be inexcusable today. The non-adjustable footwell makes it less useful for short people, as their legs press on the handlebars, and uncomfortable for tall people. The funny thing is, it's not significantly advanced over the small DC powered cars for children that you see left out for hard rubbish collection, on occasion. It would have been crazy to suggest children would have electric cars as toys, back when the C5 came out, I think, but if you look at any of those modern toy cars, the technology is basically the same.

This might be of interest to some: Sir Clive was undaunted by the demise of Sinclair Vehicles and the C5. He carried on trying to bring to life his vision of electrically assisted pedal cycles into the 1990s under the Cambridge banner with his Sinclair ZETA. ZETA, standing for Zero Emission Transport Accessory, was a battery, motor and friction drive in a box which clamped to the seat post of any bicycle and rested on top of the back wheel, where the friction drive wheel would give your bike a boost. It didn't receive anywhere near the publicity of the C5, but I think it's still an interesting part of the history of Electric Vehicles.

The netherlands as a test market, that sounds interresting. So the transportstion authorities at the time took safety a lot more serious then in 2011 when they approved an EV called “Stint”. This vehicle was recently banned by the transportation minister because it had a few too many safety quirks after one was involved with quite a horrible accident. This particulair EV can be thought of as a driving plastic bathtub. They where used by daycare centres to transport childern. Appearrantly the electronics in them where unreliably and sensitive to Electromagnetic interference which could make them do unpredictable things.

It's a bit late to save Sinclair Research, but as of 2014, the Sinclair C5 can be made road legal in the Netherlands, provided you either can get it insured as an disabled person's vehicle, or you build in a pedal sensor that cuts off the power to the motor if the rider stops pedalling.

It's amazing that the question of DIY modifcation of the C5 was left as the last question, rather than expanding it to say 'with current technology, what could the C5 have become' and asking early on in the video. We all know the history to death about the C5 (in fact there was a documentary shortly after the introduction of the C5 that got produced, and when it was shown, there was a snippet of an update basically saying that the whole thing had collapsed and production ended at the Hoover plant in Merthyr Tydfil) - so unfortunately have to say that the rest was basically covering old ground until that last question which should've been expanded upon rather than over-simplified of 'you can make modifications to the battery, and that's it basically'

The Washing Machine motor in Clive's bike would have done well to be replaced by the type of motor I have but for each of the rear wheels, and possibly a dual-stick steering system. The three batteries (10x10x15cm each) would be easily accomodated in the rear, along with a controller. The influx of cheap chinese Ebikes is looking good down here at the End of the World, now with 48V machines, LiFePO batteries and much better through-put. A search engine would help enormously.

Great video as usual, although if I may offer a bit of advice on the audio - in the scenes in the garage it sounds like your compressor's gain reduction and release time are set too high, and the threshold is perhaps set a little low. That results in the volume of conversation dropping for a few seconds every time more than one of you speaks at once. Tightening those settings up would help a lot with the fidelity of the audio. While it isn't critical, you can also improve the audio a little by cutting LF from the stereo image. The best way to do this is to set up a stereo EQ in mid-side mode (e.g. FabFilter Pro-Q2) on each stereo audio input, with a 350Hz low cut on the side band. This removes the stereo from the low-frequency band of the audio, which in turn reduces the amount of stereo interference (constructive and destructive interference) in the mixdown and doesn't cause the compressor to overreact quite so much.

After seeing the innards of the C5 in this video I cannot help but wonder where the budget went? I can understand spending £20 million (When 20 mil was a lot of money) if he had researched and improved batteries or some wondrous gearbox, but as far as I can tell he used off the shelf bike parts, a motor which wasn't a washing machine motor, just made by a washing machine motor company to almost the same spec as the motors they already made - for washing machines; and a big moulded plastic fairing. Sir Clive can be considered a genius for some of his creations but for this it's akin to "Newton - The Alchemy years" where a once great mind became fixated on a fool's errand. It wasn't even hi tech for the time. He wasn't ahead of his time any more than if I 'invented' the personal hovercraft by having a bloody big fan pushing down through a space hopper contraption and then in 50 years time when we are using some kind of levitation as yet unknown or not commercially available (or in his case the Li-ion battery) people will say how forward thinking and before my time I was. We still do not really have personal electric transport. We have bypassed the one person electric 'car/bike' and gone straight to the mid sized hatchbacks and full size family cars because the idea of an electric vehicle for one person is now, as it was then, a daft idea.

I ran over my mate in one of them racing down a big hill i hit over 30mph the one we had didnt have a motor he jumped out in front of me so i ran him over he went flying over the top of me lol, you wouldn't dare turn going down hill as the topple really easy turning. i had a lot of fun in one when i was younger but there not particularly very good and as for using them on the road it could be pretty scarry.

so, i guess sir Clive was a Tron geek :D the design is similar to a light-cycle. if only the driving stance was better though.. the concept for the other models were even closer, Fantastic

Why, in spite of its many shortcomings, do I have a fascination with these pieces of quirky weirdness? Dreamed up by Sir Clive, made in Merthyr Tydfil, commercially a failure, but a classic nonetheless!

A good modern motor and variable speed drive coupled to a modern battery would transform it. Perhaps also add a nice simple gearing system like a hub change unit? I hope the Iris does well and has learned the lessons of the C5

It certainly seems like the C5 would fare far better if it were introduced(re-introduced?) today with advances in batteries and technology in general. Might could use a canopy attachment for that good old UK weather, though.

It makes more sense than you'd think. Your legs are naturally elevated because of the pedals and it simplifies the steering mechanism considerably over what you'd think of as the "natural" position
@NoobixCube
@NoobixCube 5 жыл бұрын
From a seated position, having your arms up to constantly be in touch with the handlebars, would result in a lot of arm strain. Your arms would go slack and tired, so you'd have trouble reacting. And you'd just find it unpleasant. The real unfortunate thing of this design is, people with shorter legs will constantly be pressing on the handlebars, while people with longer legs will be very cramped. The lack of adjustability is a moderately serious flaw.
