I’m retired and 83 years old, and KZbin is the best part of life, at this time. I love all the incredible music and assorted videos and Darren is absolutely incredible. My favorite groups are Singit Live, HSCC, Lexington Lab Band and Classic Rock Live. Listening to songs like Rocket Man, with a good pair of headphones, is just amazing. Each instrument stands out so perfectly and he sings it flawlessly. I’m beholding to this guy for bringing so much enjoyment to my retirement.

Darren, you have brought back so many good memories for me. As an audio engineer in a previous life, I would record to 2 inch 24 track. Digital recording was in its infancy in the 1990s. You mentioned using a DI. I remember building my own, I used it for the bass guitar and also had a microphone on the amp. The trusty SM 57 is still in use. Dynamic microphone, cardioid pattern, you can't go wrong. I would generally use a Rhode microphone, love the sound. A Sennheiser on the kick was usually my go to. It has been so long, I don't remember all the models of the microphones. I am looking forward to the mix video. I still have my compressor and two SPX 990s.

Well, this was both interesting and timely. Loved the info on alternate light sources and the Moment tips. I've only recently beginning to think about video but I have a few Hue lights controlled by both Siri and Alexa which works out nicely and I don't even getup to turn lights on or off... or change colors. But it's just me, in my little own keyboard pit surrounded by a million synth and piano knobs. "Siri, Turn On Piano LEDs 30%" may end up as vocals in one of my songs lol. Actually I have written a Siri Navigation song called "Proceed to the Route." ;) For now, the lighting, my lighting, is for my own moods, nightclub style. I love how you've able to hide most of your cables... custom cut I'm sure. You must do your own soldering. Can't wait to hear the new Huey Lewis song. I was reading about his tinitus issues recently... I hope he can hear your cover version cause I'm sure it will be great.

I know that changing the key can make a big difference sometimes, but if the original is a little on the high side for you, is there a reason you wouldn't pitch it down a semitone or a tone to make it a bit more comfortable for you? I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on that. Thanks for the overview. Interesting to see your process. - And if anyone made it to the end, be reassured - we love the nerdy stuff! 🤓

Thanks for giving us a behind-the-scenes look! This is amazing. Is every musician on in-ears or do some have speaker monitors? How do you handle the bleed coming from the drums and vocals? Is there any overdubbing done? Much appreciated! Thanks!!!
@producernerd Жыл бұрын
monitors play keys and any guitars that are direct (with no amp in the room) but softly for anyone without IEM’s. These days most of us have ears. Bleed is good, in fact it is part of the ‘sound’ we get. Obviously we must always use dynamics for vocals to reduce bleed. I prefer to use parts of other takes to patch any small errors.

@ParaBellum2024 Жыл бұрын
Very good! I had assumed that this setup was a bit like a silent stage, with any observer in the room hearing the drums, and people singing, while the instruments went into the computer and the musicians' earpieces, but were not amplified in the room. But Crafty's guitar was amplified (not sure about Stefan's setup). So, if they're using amps with microphones in front of their speakers, how do you avoid crosstalk, in such a small space?
@producernerd Жыл бұрын
Sometimes Stefan’s amp can get quite loud but bleed is something I’ve learned to embrace. I now use it to my advantage. All part of the overall vibe of the mix.
@ParaBellum2024 Жыл бұрын
@@producernerd Thanks Darren. The recording quality you achieve is as good as (or better than) anything coming from large studios. Do you work with international artists and record companies, to get their acts' music down, or is it purely a local activity?

Question, do you're singers use a telepromter with the lyrics for your songs?
@producernerd11 ай бұрын
We sometimes put lyrics up on the screen in front but it's difficult when the camera man is standing and moving around in front of them. Ultimately I would like to use a teleprompter but it will also require extra setup (by me cause I'm one guy 😅). Singing the correct lyrics is so important so to me a teleprompter is a justified addition

@producernerd There's nothing wrong with a cover that completely reinterprets a song. Artists do it all the time, and sometimes it is brilliant. What bugged me was that he still wanted to have the songs sound familiar so people of my generation would listen -- in which case, just cover the song and show that you have the ear, the chops, and the discipline to recreate it live!
