Sawadee khap my farangutan friends and puan puan khun Thai! Did I mention that I used to live and work in Singapore? Yes, I used to be known as Our Man In Singapore. However, I swapped Singers for Bangers. We all like a good Banger, right?
So, I had some footage from my time in Singapore - not a lot - and I thought I'd put it on the OMIB Retro playlist.
I had been living and working in Bangkok for about 7 years when the school I worked for decided not to renew the contracts of all its Western staff. I had to find a new job and quick and that led to me going to Singapore for an interview with Lorna Whiston Schools Ltd. I got the job, and, in the summer of 2012, I arrived in Singapore on a 2-year contract.
I was teaching Speech and Drama to a wide range of students. I believe the youngest group I taught were the young toddlers who would come to class with their parents, right up to adults taking Trinty drama exams.
The first year wasn't great. I really regrated the move. However, The Na'ster found a job and that kept her occupied and I was able to put some money away in the second year which made the move worthwhile. After my two years were up, I was happy to fly back to Thailand and there is footage of The Na'ster and myself on a Thai Airways flight Bangkok bound at the end of the video. I think Na flips me the bird. We came back in summer 2014. Most of the footage is from around that time.
There is a longer section in the video where I go hiking around MacRitchie Reservoir. This is a mix of video and stills. As I explain, smartphones were relatively new and battery life wasn't the best, so I mixed short clips with still images. As it was originally made for Facebook, I added a musical soundtrack over the top. Yeah, that would be a copyright strike on KZbin today. You'll see me blabbering on, but I have had to add a musical track over the narration to cover the original soundtrack.
The video quality is not the best. I think the phone was my first smartphone and I think I have had two more phones since then. A lot is shot in portrait and looks like I filmed through an open door! Still, it is a record of my time in Singers and a product of the technology of the time. Wait until you see some of the Sony Ericsson footage from Northern Thailand from before smartphones! The quality is shocking! We bought these phones thinking we were preserving our memories! Hopefully I can do something with it an AI.
Anyhow, thanks for watching. If you enjoyed the video, leave a like, consider sharing or subscribing. Also, hit the bell for notification of further uploads.
