Basic guidelines for Singaporean rations: 1. If possible, always heat them up! 2. Spicy rations are the best 3. The SATS biscuits are very hard, we call them dog biscuits for a reason. To make them more palatable, dip them in coffee, Milo or even water to make them softer, almost like a cake. 4. Pasta and noodles tend to be better than the rice menus because the rice tends to be smashed and broken and gloopy when we eat it

Pocari Sweat is excellent for re-hydration! In the US, you can find it in Asian grocery stores (Mitsuwa, Ranch 99, Zion.) And it's great after you've had a few too many!

Great review! It brings back memories of serving my duty in Singapore more than 20 years ago. I remember tearing a small opening off the main pack and "squeezing" the meal directing into my mouth. Most of my section mates will mix the chocolate biscuit in water. I prefer it "solid". You will be most welcome to visit Singapore and I hope you will enjoy your time here!

One lifehack to heat up green packs (our unofficial slang for the MRE main pack) was to slide it into our plate carriers right up against our bodies. By the time you’ve trekked through a jungle all night, fought your way through an objective, and can finally have time to eat, you’ve generated enough body heat to get a nice and hot meal.
@konkeydong6907
@konkeydong6907 6 ай бұрын
A few interesting things are that every flavour of the main meal is just a random mix of flavours, and these 'dishes' dont exist in South East Asia. The meals are mushy so you can eat them easily from the packet by opening a small hole, and then consuming it without any utensils. Since we live in a hot tropical area, we can easily heat up the meals by leaving the meal packets in the sun on the floor (what we all did while we were in service), and this REALLY helped improve the taste. Weirdly enough, we believe it makes you constipated because we could hold in our stuff for a few days after having them everyday for every meal. If you love soursop juice, you should try a fresh one because it is much better than the packet juice! The Milo is a luxury item for us and its meant to have bout half the water you added, any more than that it becomes just chalky water like you described. Some people just eat the Milo powder or Pocari Sweat powder just like that for the extra kick! Oh good times.

This is how we eat the biscuits in the Armed Forces 1) Tear the package sideways till about just all the way 2) Pour water into the package with the biscuit and let it soak the whole block of biscuits for a few seconds. 3) Pour out all remaining water and let the residual water soak through the biscuit for maybe a minute or 2 4) Enjoy and eat it like a cake - Its pretty good, give it a try! Depending on individual, some may soak it longer with more water for a softer cake-like texture or lesser water and shorter timing for a half-crunchy, half-cake-like texture.

Most of the stuff in the ratio pack you can get from a supermarket. Only the ones in green camo packaging (the MREs and food bars) are controlled items. These are the ones I would bring outfield. The civilian foodstuffs I usually keep it at company line where there is hot water. During outfield training we eat straight from the green package. It saves a lot of time.

These rations are way better that the combat rations I have back in the days. They consist of 3 can food, namely Baked Beansm Sardines and Braised Pork or Curry Chicken. The accessories will be a Chocolate Bar, Instant Coffee, Hard Tack Biscuits (which we thought it was left overs from World War 2) and a couple packets of jams. We often supplements the rations with stuff we buy from the supermarkets.

There are a few missing pieces to the full set, because they're not listed officially but issued anyway. One of it is 2 packs of Maggie instant noodles, either curry or chicken flavour. The seasoning is quite salty, so half of it goes into the instant noodles dry and crushed like a popular local snack Mamee Monster (or you can cook it normally), and other half can be used to season the blander ration packs. Another is a can of Ayam Brand tuna mayo which has pickled cucumber in it, that's the missing link to the saltine-like biscuits. There is also a pack of Lipton instant iced lemon tea, and also a can or two of 100 Plus isotonic drink.

The meal and dessert packs are designed to be eaten on the move… simply tear off the top or a corner with your hands and we would squeeze the food up and eat off the pack. That includes the dessert… tear a corner and pour it into our mouth. We are taught how to cook (heat up) with the mess tin in basic training, as part of field training, but in unit - nobody/hardly anyone cooks, we just eat off the packs for convenience. Disposal for field discipline and environmental protection is easy, simply roll the pack up and keep it in a ziploc.

Think you added too much water into the milo. If you order one in a restaurant in Singapore, they usually use a very large amount of powder to water ratio with added condensed milk. Us conscripts in the military usually consume our milo packets by pouring the powder into our mouths and then taking a swig of water from our water canteen.

Good afternoon from the Great State of Texas. I enjoyed this video. You are right, breakfast was a little weak, but it all looked good. How many hours did you have between the breakfast and lunch. @vennsim71
@vennsim71 6 ай бұрын
We don’t have time specific between meals. We consume the mains when we get break time out field. If we have the luxury of a vehicle nearby, don’t be surprised to see folks putting the green packs all over the engine hood. But most of the time to maintain tactical movements, we simply quietly just tear a small opening and squeeze the food into our mouths, at our own position, on our own. We don’t see the need to heat the food given that temperature is usually above 30 degrees celcius and high humidity in the jungles (maybe lesser given the canopy, but thick SEAsian jungles you don’t get a single breeze). Eating hot food in that environment makes it pretty unbearable.
@Akideoni
@Akideoni 6 ай бұрын
14:30 for foil packs they are generally recommended to heat them up before consumption to loosen up the gravy or dessert consistency further. As most does contain something akin to emulsion that only works better after heated.

The intended feeding method is to rip a small hole on one corner and proceed to squeeze the contents into our mouth. No utensils. Singapore history is really interesting. Its a City State to start with. It was part of the original Spice Trail and had a link to the Silk Trail. The Dutch and Ottoman Empires both laid claim to it at some point in time. The cuisine is just plain 'FUSION' everything. Its one of the richest cities in the world and has some of the most strictest public laws. Spit on the sidewalk or be seen chewing gum in public, you go to jail first then pay a steep fine.... and then, the caning and you can go home.

I use those two terms interchangeably
@KaiShanIV
@KaiShanIV 7 ай бұрын
@@ReadinessRations Firstly, they aren't interchangeable; an entrée is an appetiser, an 'entry' to the meal. Secondly, they are labelled entrees (no accent) on the package! I understand, it's Singapore and English (well, French) is not their strong point (I used to live on Marine Parade in SG and the road signs actually said 'Marine Parade Road'). But I do kind of think that if manufacturing military rations is your business then checking that the labelling is correct should be a priority. As an aside; French military rations actually DO have entrées not mains, but they have two different entrées rather than one main so you don't get bored.
