It was Malaya initially consists of West Malaysia and Singapore. Malaya gained independence in 1957 and it was still called Malaya. Then in 1963, East Malaysia (sabah, sarawak) decided to join Malaya and the new country is called Malaysia. Some states of Malaysia such as Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Singapore have the majority Chinese and the political party of PAP formed in Singapore was not comfortable to other political parties which have the majority Malays. So, Singapura or Singapore was kicked out of Malaysia and gained independence in 1965. Even though the majority is Chinese but the minorities( indians, Malays etc) are not in small percentage. That is why you can see hindu temples, little india, china town, chinese taoist temple, churches, mosques, etc in Malaysia and Singapore as well.
@StarSpawn066 жыл бұрын
@HDsharp @STMF S @KC CHEONG Singapore was killed and revived more than once. According to legend, Sang Nila Utama had come from Sumatra and set up the kingdom of Singapura. but that's from a heavily mythologized account (the Malay Annals) written down long after the fall of the supposed kingdom. Archaeological evidence shows that a prosperous trading hub city state DID exist in Singapore at least as early as the 14th century, but there is so far no evidence of who founded it. The actual earliest description of Singapore (by a Yuan Dynasty Chinese merchant, Wang Dayuan, who called the island by the old name of Temasek) included Orang Laut, Malays and Chinese inhabitants living side by side. It was not ruled by anyone else (the Siamese tried to invade but were held off). Another Vietnamese account tells of a Vietnamese prince speaking in Malay to envoys from Temasek. Then the island somehow got annexed by the Majapahit empire. Then it got "reclaimed" by the Malacca sultanate (whose rulers claimed to be descended from the former kings of Singapore). Then it got razed by the Portuguese. Then the crown prince of the Johor sultanate went there after his younger brother took the throne from him. Then Raffles found the island and set up a trading settlement. Later the British fully colonized it. Then the Japanese invaded and held it for a brief while. Then the British returned. Then Singapore joined Malaysia so as to be free of British rule. Then it separated from Malaysia. And then Singapore becomes what it is today. Full circle. Our earliest forebears were independent and multi-ethnic, and so are we today. So no, we're NOT just the offshoot of this or that particular nation. Not Britain, nor China,nor Indonesia, not even Malaysia. We're a nation formed from unique circumstances.

I have to disagee, HDSharp, even if I suspect they are simply better hidden from tourists in some cities. I spent a week in (to my eyes) an excellent suburb in central Tokyo only to find that it's considered a mecca for the homeless. I did see men who were obviously homeless in Seoul but had no such experience in Tokyo : perhaps it was simply timing but the streets were noticeably cleaner than Australian cities (dont even get me started on Bangkok, Jakarta and Pnomh Penh). I'd stay in Shinjuku again without hesitation, but whether tourists see them or not I agree that homelessness is an increasing problem worldwide.
