Singapore used to be made up of over 70 islands lined up along its Northern and southern maritime boundaries.
The southern island of Lazarus, St. John and Kusu is located 6.5 km south of mainland Singapore. In the 1970s, these 6 southern islands were enlarged through land reclamation. 3 were joined by a series of causeways. They are now known as the southern islands
Over 5,000 Singaporeans used to live on the southern islands. By 1975, the last villagers left to resettled on the mainland of Singapore Today, there are no residents left on the southern islands.
Most visitor would know Sentosa but few have venture further south to these island.
Of all the southern islands, St John has the richest history. Many accounts say Sir Raffles was anchorage not on mainland Singapore but on Lazarus Island and the first local he encounters were from these island. When the British came they build one of the largest quarantine centre in the British Empire because diseases. People coming down from China and India may have to stay here for a short while before they were allowed go on to the mainland. It was then transform into an opium treatment centre. n 1955 it became a drug rehabilitation centre.
Today the islands serves locals who wants escape the city life and appreciate the nature of Singapore.
