Fyi for those saying that killing sharks is the same as killing dogs, pigs, cows etc: it is actually a big difference because the Sharks are NOT farmed nor are their species in abundance. Dogs, pigs, cows etc are FARMED animals therefore are abundantly available to eat. If Asians in the eastern hemisphere want to eat it then by all means farm your own sharks and then eat them all you want. But for crying out loud if you're going to eat sharks make sure it's a sustainable method! And because Asians are great at using all parts of an animal why not learn to use the whole animal instead of just 1/5th of its body? I myself am an Asian born in Thailand so I feel I have the rights to say something on this practice and I've watched docs and done research on this topic. I have not lost respect for them because not a lot of ppl are aware of this issue. But I'm pretty sure they are aware now so the next time they do it THEN I'll lose my respect.
@kathylennerds75010 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Also Sharks are an endangered species and pigs, cows, dogs etc definatly aren't.

Its comforting to know that shark fins are now banned in many places here in Singapore. If the cravings hit, there's always the vegetarian version! :)
@sunrainsnow10 жыл бұрын
We sell shark meat in the supermarkets too, so we are not eating 1/5 of the body.
@deedL310 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that people sold shark meat. If they do, not a lot of people know because it's not a common practice I'm sure. But my argument is more based on the practice of overfishing sharks and only using their fins. It's more of a common thing than using the whole shark. Or else it wouldn't be as big of a deal.
@shsh525910 жыл бұрын
Dee Her they sell whale/shark/dophin meat in japan fish market. but shark meat or shark fin is not important. not about wasting meat or endangered species. because this is about the importance of shark population to earth survival. From article. withoutmethereisnou.wordpress.com/2010/12/28/why-sharks-are-so-important-to-our-ecosystem/ --> Sharks control the population of species that feed off photoplankton. With a decline in the shark population, there is going to be a steady decline of photoplankton, therefore affecting the oxygen levels of the oceans. Oxygen on Earth is very dependent on the oxygen of the ocean. If we neglect this fact, we are bringing death to the Earth. if u want earth to survive, we have to stop eating sharks. say no to eating sharks!
@IrisSmiles10 жыл бұрын
Everyone is getting mad about the shark fin stuff but I know for a fact, if Steph and Jenn would have known about it, they wouldn't have eaten it. You guys are calling them ignorant for not researching it before but no one thinks about that. Don't say you lost respect for them when they really didn't know because it might hurt their feelings. I'm in no way supportive of shark finning/shark fin consuming, but just for cultural context, people in Asia don't just sell shark fin soup in street side restaurants, it is expensive and is only sold in fancy, high end restaurants. That said, I don't want to assume what Steph and Jenn had in their dumplings were actual shark fin since I know more and more restaurants are beginning to replace shark fin with vermicelli instead as they're very similar in texture and both tasteless yet vermicelli is made of rice and much much less expensive. Of course I can't guarantee this to be true everywhere in Asia, I just want to get it out there so people don't start giving Steph and Jenn backlash without knowing the truth first.

its quite scary how some people work. for the sweetest and most loved people there are always those that are waiting for something to nitpick on. while shark finning is wrong i highly highly doubt jenn or stephanie knew anything about it. they were in a new country and youre more inclined to try to be open and try new dishes/foods. i doubt they had time to sit down and research EVERY dish they ate. so to those people that have "lost respect" you obviously did not have much for them to begin with. and to jenn and stephanie sorry for all the rukus in the comments. you girls keep being lovely and just ignore the rude comments and learn from this in a way.

Everyone commenting how it's so cruel about the Sharks its true it is very cruel I know a lot about it but unless your a vegan you have no right to say anything as what they do to chickens by caging them and putting hormones in them is also wrong. What they do to cows by artificially inseminating them to produce a constant flow of milk is wrong. And there are many more so you guys need to do your research I am strongly against shark finning as well but you cannot say that you are when you are eating cows, chickens, pigs and various other animal who can treated with the same disrespect.
@kandixlovaxandi10 жыл бұрын
I'm not being rude in any way and I hate the way those animals are treated it's disgusting but they are mass produced U cannot do that with sharks so it is killing our oceans if you could breed sharks like the other animals it could be compared to that but since they are slowly becoming extinct because no one will give them the chance to reproduce its a bigger topic than the others without sharks our whole ocean will die (I only know this from my marine ecology class I didn't look this up on the Internet we did a whole thing about it in class)
@georgiahughes820210 жыл бұрын
+Andrea Apodaca yes but with mass reproduction also comes consequences. When a female is constantly giving birth it is also very harmful for the female. It can ruin there reproductive system and worse (look up other consequences for the female) and when dairy cows are born if they are male they are either straightaway sold for meat or they are killed because males cannot produce dairy. Which means the higher the reproduction the higher amount of males born meaning they don't have much of a chance in life. I do understand what your saying and the low reproduction of sharks is a problem I understand that I also take a marine animals class as well as other classes to do with animals but there is consequence with high reproduction as well
@georgiahughes820210 жыл бұрын
I also am not being rude and I am actually complaining to get shark hinting completely illegal where I live (Australia) I was just pointing out to the people to not be hypocritical:) +Andrea Apodica
@paintpastels921510 жыл бұрын
Georgia Hughes You are comparing apples with oranges. Is it sad the farm animals were confined and didn't lead a dignified life and weren't around to roam? Yes. Can you do something about this as a consumer? Yes, buy organic produce. Write to companies to stop animal abuse and farm them with higher integrity. Lobby. That said, you comparing an endangered species to creatures that are highly abundant isn't logical. Then to say people are being hypocritical, and don't have a right to voice it out simply because they don't eat meat is a silly and weak argument. Eating animals is part of the food chain. Animals hunt each other, we hunt animals. It's survival. Is a lion cruel to kill a deer? No, it's simply having a meal and feeding itself. The key point here is that if we have knowledge and information to know that a creature is at danger of becoming extinct, which will cause the whole marine eco system to collapse, which also means our own survival in the end since Earth is made up of 70% water, do we sit there and do nothing and continue to let the species die out simply because "oh, it would be hypocritical since we eat other animals too"? Girl, be logical.
@Blueberrycaprice10 жыл бұрын
There are many bad things about eating farm animals but sharks are an endangered species. Even though someone isn't vegan they can care about protecting an endangered animal and the ocean ecosystems.

@josephinemichna-konigstorf362510 жыл бұрын
Other animals such as pigs and chickens are specifically bred therefore they aren't affecting the ecosystem whereas sharks aren't bred, so the vegan argument doesn't work in this case. But the food was flavoured so it could have been synthetic.

In Singapore, a lot of the "shark's fin" products are simply shark's fin flavoring (artificial) bc many hotels/restaurants have received many petitions in the past. Few restaurants nowadays serve real shark's fin because of the high cost and ethical issues surrounding it. It is very likely that Jenn and Stephanie ate flavored shark's fin products (artificial) instead of the real deal.

Do you really think ANYONE researches every single dish they're about to eat for it's ethicality? I hope you're vegan, because if you've ever eaten chicken, beef or pork before then you're being terribly hypocritical. No shit eating an animal kills it? Eating shark is perfectly normal and common in Asia, by the way.
@deesaxon10 жыл бұрын
Arietta Melbourne Just because something is commonly done, it does not mean it is always right. If we were to take that stance, then is Japan absolutely justified in their whale killings (because it's perfectly normal and common in their culture)? Or is China's slaughtering of elephants totally fine because of their love of ivory? ETA hell, if you want to get hyperbolic even, was racism and genocide alright in 1930-40s Germany? Because it was 'perfectly normal and common' then too.
@CatnipCari10 жыл бұрын
deesaxon I'm sorry but if you want to control the shark fin sales here, you'd be affecting a majority of the restaurants in Singapore, because it's sold almost everywhere. It's a profit-driven thing. So far not everyone is well aware of the implications here, so if you want to change the situation, you'd have to change their mindset. I personally avoid eating sharks fin soup, but on some occasions when I have no control of the events I attend, sharks fin soup is served. Please do not attack the youtubers for something they had no control of. Moreover, it was a food tasting, is it wrong? It was given to them. They didn't ask for this.

I'm sorry the comments are all about shark fins, but what can you do. I'm a vegetarian and the fact that Jenn and Stephanie consumed shark fins does not make me lose respect for them, but you can't compare eating shark fins with eating pork (for example). I am not saying that the methods humans use to produce other forms of meat are fine, because they're not. However, cruelty towards cows and pigs can be stopped with time (at least in theory). Sharks, on the other hand, may become extinct before their well-being is a concern of people other than environmental activists and scientists. Furthermore, you can't excuse shark fin consumption with the concept of culture. How many of you have watched "The Cove"? You know, the documentary illustrating the process of bringing the dolphin massacres in Japan to light? Did you really spend the entire film thinking "It's completely okay since it's part of their culture?"

Usually coffee beans are toasted with sugar, the beans used in white coffee aren't toasted with sugar. White coffee tends to have more of a bitter taste. =)

Thanks for visiting Singapore! Anyway all the snacks from are made from other Asia countries and not SIngapore made. Singapore imports all their stuff from worldwide as we have no land for animal, vegetation farm and natural resources. We are a multi racial dense people oriented city who depends who neighbouring countries for source of food.
