Singapore swimmer Quah Ting Wen's omission from Paris Olympics confirmed after appeal rejected

Singapore veteran swimmer Quah Ting Wen said the way she lost her spot in the 4x100m relay team for the Paris Olympics is unfair, but it has fuelled her desire to not quit the sport. The 31-year-old said she does not want the heartbreak to be the last memory of her decades-long career. World Aquatics has rejected Singapore's last-ditch appeal to include her in the Summer Games. Ting Wen is the most prolific athlete in SEA Games history with 60 medals from nine editions, including 34 golds. Alif Amsyar reports.

A summary of the whole thing: 1. For Singapore to form a relay team, you need 4 swimmers. 2 must be good enough to qualify for individual events as well, and the other 2 can 'free-ride'. 2. Singapore only had 1 who was 'good enough' - Letitia. By right, you couldn't even send a team. 3. However, SG was given a waiver. 3 people can 'free-ride' instead. Add in Levenia and the Quah sisters. Start the arrangements. 4. However, in June, Gan Ching Hwee swam a time that was 'good enough' as well. 5. Now World Aquatics wants their waiver back. They told SG: "You either slot in Gan into the relay, or you keep current lineup." 6. SG chose to go with Gan - and since she's a freestyler who can only do that particular leg, Quah Ting Wen goes.

Bad reporting. Wen didn't make the B cut, 1500 meter swimmer is closer to cut as very few women compete in the 1500. If Wen made the B cut, she would be swimming in Paris. CNA usually does a good job reporting, this story was terrible.

@@keys4321 "A cut", "B cut" and Universality, with a limit of 852 total swimmers from all over the world is why she didn't make it. I looked at doing this many years ago as I was training with a swimmer with top 20 times from a tiny country, but he was the only one with even B cuts. Even if I could make B cuts, still wasn't sure if would be able to compete at the Olympics due to the formula.
@danieltan2270
@danieltan2270 14 күн бұрын
Wen didnt make the B cut is obvious. I wouldnt say it is bad reporting for not stating that. World Aquatics had previously granted Singapore an exemption to allow three relay-only swimmers to compete instead of the maximum of two. But when World Aquatics offered Gan an invitation to participate in the women’s 1,500m event based on her Olympic consideration time - or Olympic “B” cut - of 16:10.61 clocked earlier this month, it is not clear in the reporting that they would also reduce from three to only two relay only swimmers to compete in the 4 x 100 m relay event if Gan accepted the offer. In the written CNA article, it is only stated World Aquatics offered Singapore the choice between sending Quah or Gan, who is also entitled to compete in up to two individual events. I feel SAQ need to be more careful in their adminstration. Wen got screwed by SAQ but to be fair i do not understand AQUA criteria. How can a long distance free style swimmer take the place of freestyle sprinter. Gan's B cut time is for 1500 m and not the 100 m dash. So in a way SAQ got screwed by AQUA and Wen got screwed by both SAQ poor maangement of relay team and by odd rules of World Aquatics. Unlike in 2021, i think Wen was not ranked high enough to earn a place via universality place this round. I am not sure i am right on this last point.

Moral of the story is to qualify on your individual ticket & not ride on others' coattails to qualify. Without Letitia, the relay team would not hv qualified. Gan met "B" cut while Ting didn't. If Gan is picked, we get additional 800m & 1500m slots. The choice is clear.

That is not true. The relay team and each member had to earn their spot through finishing with a good enough time. As a team, Quah, with sister Jing Wen and national teammates Letitia Sim and Levenia Sim, met the Olympic qualifying criteria for the 4x100m medley relay at the world championships in February. The top 3 teams at last year's World Aquatics Championships made the cut for Paris, while the next 13 countries with the next fastest times from both this year's and last year's World Aquatics Championships also qualify. Had Gan been in the relay team instead of Wen, they may not have finished fast enough.

Levenia knocked off a few secs off Khoo's best & of course at "A" cut, Letitia is also much better than Chue The Quahs want to go to the Olympics together. Sure, earn it with your own capabilities via an individual "A" cut or at least a "B" cut. @@jeffreychua9269This is a team event and not an individual event. Besides the Quah sisters, who else can be fielded and allowed Singapore to qualify for the medley relay? The rules do not need all relay swimmers to meet A cut times. Furthermore, the World Aquatics rules prioritise relay nominees over B cut nominees if i am not wrong. However our NSA has their own policy and Quah TW was sacrificed. B cut swimmersn would not be able to get you anywhere. Unlike the individual events, there are no Olympic “A” cut times for relay qualification. Without Quahs, Singapore would not have qualified for her first ever relay event and would only be able to send 3 instead of 5 swimmers now. And by the way, it is Letitia and nit Levenia that met the A cut time for her events. Is Gan as fast as Quah TW in the 100 m free? If not, arent we being forced to sent a weaker team because of some bad Aqua ruling?

Let it be VERY CLEAR that Gan Ching Hwee earned her rightful spot via 1500m, and her presence in the Olympics also allows our country to field in one more event. Her only "mistake" was earning it AFTER the '3 relay-only swimmers' appeal. Had she earned it earlier, I doubt this would even be an issue as by default, the appeal probably wouldn't have worked. The rules are very simple and the reason for QTW's exclusion isn't that complicated. It's unfortunate that her exclusion was last minute, but if you are relying on an appeal for your spot in the Olympics, then I'm sorry but you're no longer that great. Since Letitia and Gan qualified through OQT and OCT, Singapore Aquatics had no choice but to sacrifice one athlete, in this case, Quah Ting Wen. Conversely, if Quah Ting Wen (or even Quah Jing Wen or Levinia Sim) had qualified for an individual event through OQT or OCT, this unfortunate situation would not have occurred. That's a dXXXb assumption, truly reflecting a mountain turtle or frog in the well global view. Do you know there were swimmers in their late 30s or 40 years old who competed in the swimming Olympics. Age is not a barrier. Go search Dara Torres and Anthony Ervin. Do you know why they can win? because their country supported them and thought out of the box. For Singapore to succeed in any sports, tell me how many families can afford it like Colin Schooling.

Making the cut is just making the numbers. She had hit the plateau years ago, so no point sending her. If we have to send, then send younger ones 👍

Quah Ting Wen did not meet the Olympic Qualification Time (OQT) nor Olympic Consideration Time (OCT)*, that's why the relay team can't qualified together. Simple as that. (*same for Levinia and Jing Wen for their individual event)

Bottomline is that Gan is better than Quah, and there is only one spot left. So they picked Gan over Quah. Quah just needs to acknowledge that she is just not good enough and focus on self-improvement, rather than turn to the Media to create a storm.

Quah Ting Wen is better than Gan in the sprints. Get your facts rights. It is an unfortumate event. Mark Chay needs to take responsibility for poor management of selection process.

to supplement the $100 million in funds it received from Sport Singapore over teh last five financial cycles has meant that the sport is being run on bare bones. Who has caused this? It is the leadership of the FAS.
