Regarding your last sentence, that’s probably much less true since Mahathir made Malay the language of instruction in education in the 1970s. In the decades since then, the general standard of English in national schools has declined significantly.
Well said. Interesting that the KZbinr used this incident to illustrate her point that Singaporeans were too inflexible/uptight, while Malaysians tend to be more chill. She says there were only the three of them on that staircase in the MRT station, so there was no need to apply the “keep left unless overtaking” rule. That may be one way of looking at it. Personally, I would just have overtaken them on the left instead of making them move to the left where slower moving pedestrians should be. However, another way of looking at it is that she should have taught her son, even at three, to stand on the left (there should be a rail to hold on to on that side as well) since the right lane is meant for overtaking. Never too early to teach children proper rules of social conduct eg how to take the train and cross roads. Just because there’re few people around, it’s ok to ignore the “keep left unless overtaking” rule? Does that mean if there are few cars on the road, he can jaywalk too? It’s a slippery slope.

I agree, your son has no future in Malaysia, this is why so many Chinese-Malaysian have left Malay and immigrated to UK/Australia and not moving back to Malay what so ever.

Malay govs priority is to preserve Malaysian culture, and you Chinese moving to Malay, don’t speak local language, don’t mix with local society, only driving up the housing market, so young Malay can’t afford to buy their 1st house. That’s why you will be treated like a 2nd class citizen.

But 93% of the companies on the Malaysian stock market are owned by Chinese.
Funny how more than 1 million Chinese Malaysians have left (mostly for Singapore) because of racial discrimination, but in recent years, droves of PRCs have arrived in Malaysia. Unfortunately, unlike the Chinese Malaysians who are citizens (even if second class ones) and have the permanent right to live in Malaysia, these new arrivals can only stay on short term visas eg digital nomad, study mama, MM2H, etc. PR is very hard to get, and citizenship even harder. This makes it hard to plan long term, especially when the Malaysian government is known for not infrequent policy flipflops.

Keep up your good work. Glad to see a foreigner like you with exposures and resided in several countries to give us your honest opinions in a friendly and sensible way. Some points that you may not aware may eventually come to your understanding once you stay longer here. My suggestion is once you settled down. Do explore the culture of the Malay and Indian to further strengthen your believe of this country. FYI, many chinese nationals that come and stay in Malaysia has very little contact and exposure to the Malay community and their culture. I hope you will put some effort in understanding the multi cultural and political scene as well so you will have in depth understanding and consensus about the strength and weakness of this country.
Many Malaysian Chinese, after getting Singapore PR, will become Singapore citizens after few years of working. Reasons are we share almost the same culture. Other country citizens that apply for PR are for economic purpose and not intentions applying for Singapore citizenship. Moreover, many of these PR culturally don't fit with society very well.

It is all politics. when i was growing up in the 80s - 90s there were a lot of nationalistic songs emphasising on our uniquely singapore identity, how we will rise above all and conquer the obstacles. fast forward 30 years later in the 2010s to now, they are saying Singapore is made up from people from all over the world - they are referring to post 1819 i guess. One narrative for those who understand our separation from Malaysia in 1965 and another narrative for those younger Gen Y and Z who i doubt know much about the history of modern Singapore. Next time i think we will have more africans and south americans in singapore if the population further declined.
My friend who's been working in SG for 2 yrs since 2022 has just been retrenched... sadly, according to her now a lot of companies in SG undergoing this. So, job opportunity there might be slim.
Hi. This is Calvin. Because you just live here for a month then what you covered so far is quite accurate. But i noticed you left out a very significant differentiating factor between this 2 neighboring countries that has been a deciding factor to some, safety and security. You would know the difference once you live longer here like us. And also races freedom factors. You will notice very big difference comparing with Singapore once you stay for longer here!😅
