You can hear the harmonies in the music if you're struggling to find the note. Years ago, there was a pastor who visited the church I attended whose daughter could sing harmony naturally as if she was singing the melody. It was amazing. Simon and Garfunkel are a good listening reference for harmonizing.

Y'know how sometimes you've missed something obvious for, like, ever, and one day something clicks it into place? I learned to sing harmony (any part of standard 4 part harmony) from listening to my parents and extended family who all played instruments and sang. Once I started writing songs 15 years ago I nailed down basic music theory, the old 1-4-5 pop song, etc. As a bass player, knowing the Nashville numbering system for notes and chords was the Holy Grail. Then, friends started asking me how to sing harmony. And I couldn't tell them. Now I can. Because, while it's not easy, it IS simple. Listen to scale intervals, then twist and shout your way to a harmony. Thank you :)

My mother organized a youth choir for my dad's church house and we all learned harmonies and runs and so much music, hymns, anthems, gospel tunes, you name it. I was a member of octet and madrigal ensambles in high school and college and participated in quite a few choral contests. Followed up with minor gigs singing in studios. Writing tunes, playing chords on keyboards and playing clarinet in school as well. I regret never being signed to a contract nor did I ever record an album. Never knew major players in the industry. I never wanted to pay the price of damaging my reputation or becoming a statistic or being FORCED into an undesirable position. My lovely voice has never soared. My dream was never realized.

Thanks for the video! I'm a worship leader and I'm trying to teach a couple of our new vocalists how to hear harmonies. It would be awesome to see a video on 3 part harmonies. Sometimes those get a little more complex. There are times when one of the parts needs to stay place while the others move in the same direction. Also, harmonies can be more difficult when you have a song with accidentals. But this is great! Thanks again!

You're totally right. Some people grow up with it and it becomes second nature. Those singers who can do it easily are very lucky! 🙂 Others have a real hard time wrapping their heads around how to even get started, and it's not the easiest thing to learn later on... BUT it is not impossible!

I've been following Pianote for a while now, but I'm only just discovering this channel!! Very nice primer on how to hear and sing basic harmony. "Free Falling" was an excellent example song to choose. One thing I miss about music school is the ready availability of people to sing and play extra parts as I write them or think them up, so the the four-part V7 was fun to watch. If anybody asks me how to sing harmonies, I'm sending them HERE.

Wonderful lesson. Some of my fondest memories of my mother were her memories of her singing. She had such a rich, full voice and had a talent for harmonizing that I suppose she inherited from my grandfather Phil. Her voice was similar to Bette Middler and she could sing The Rose so sweetly it still brings tears to my eyes as I remember. :-) Mom had a beautiful voice and hearing this lesson reminded me of one of those connections that we share. My love of music and harmonies is very much the fruit of my mother's love of music. I grew up listening to Queen, Doobie Brothers, Eagles, ELO, BeeGees, Elton John and BIlly Joel. I also grew up listening to the hits of the 50s and 60s and the many harmonies of those classic gems. While I understand and can sing harmony, this lesson was a blessing to me and I am glad to have watched it.

3rd should work in every situation, the only difference is if you are singing over a minor chord, then the interval is a minor third i.e. it is flattened by a semi tone. I cant sing for toffee, but I learnt this from playing guitar so it should work vocally too.

@SingeoOfficial
@SingeoOfficial Жыл бұрын
Yeah! If you're looking for a lower harmony, you'll want to find a third, fourth or fifth below the melody, depending on where the melody is.... To find a descending minor third you can use the cheat song "Hey Jude" to hear the interval, to find a lower major third you can use the song "Swing low sweet chariot", for a fourth below you can use "O come all ye faithful" and for a fifth below you can use the Flintstones song. Think of the song to help you find the interval below the melody. 👍🏼

I believe you need to practice single Intervalls first, also many different ones (1-3, 1-4, 1-5, etc) to know how for example a third Sounds and how a third NOT Sounds. And If you have their intavallsounds Like "programmed" into you, you can start with full Songs and melodies. Only with piano accompaniment Not whole band is probably better. And then you will start to hear your Intervalls Not even with single Tones but also in chords. Starting with full Songs is to hard i think.

I’ll tell ya I always sang soprano in high school choir which at times was a bit night for me but it was easier than singing mezzo. I was afraid that I’d get it wrong and be embarrassed, so I just sang upper soprano. But after listening to this video and watching how you simplified it, I see that with practice it wouldn’t be as difficult as I thought. I will say that it would help if you played the parts separately, a little slower, and a few times. I think for me hearing the difference between the notes helps me to sing my part better. I think at times I can’t even tell/hear harmonies and that’s what makes it difficult for me.

What do you want? I’m not going to buy anything…I’m not going to give you my personal information…I’m not going to join some multi level marketing scheme…I’m not going to join some cult…and I’m not going to enter into some kind of relationship with you where you string me along into thinking we will meet and in the meantime you manipulate me into sending you money. So what do you want from a complete stranger…?

@@nanlev613 Why are you saying all this to me Hope? What do you even mean but manipulate you? I don’t really understand what you’re saying and I was only trying to be friend with you because life has been very lonely for me since I lost my wife. You did say cult what do you mean by that?

Usually people who sing harmonies have high ranges. My question is, are there low harmonies, or is the lowest note always the melody?
